Aquaculture and Fisheries
• Served as the aquaculture and fisheries Minister in the state of Andhra Pradesh from
1991-1992
• Promoted the first-ever Fisher women cooperative societies
• Secured World Bank funds to develop fishing community and to boost export
opportunities
• Developed fish marketing facilities in state and regularised fresh water aquaculture
business.
22. Poultry Development
• Created direct employment to 400 families where
each employee can support 6 family members.
• Helped get loans and government subsidies thus
providing direct employment to 20,000 people.
• Helped develop associated business and created jobs
for 30,000 people indirectly.
• The development of poultry industry resulted in
increased availability of protein rich food such as
chicken and eggs.
• Helped the government include eggs in mid-day
meals in all government schools.
• Bill Gates recently said “Develop Chickens, not Computers”,
Ponnala realized this 38 years ago and established Poultry
Breeding Farms in 1979 and helped many farmers in the
backward regions of the Telangana.
23. Dairy Development
• Developed dairy industry in Jangaon region across 160
villages.
•Milk collection grew from less than 500 liters in 1996-97 to
35,000 liters in Jangaon Dairy Plant.
•Established and developed dairy development societies
benefiting 20,000 dairy famers.
24. Women Empowerment
Formation and promotion of Rural Women Cooperative Bank
in Jangaon that grew from 20 members in 1994-1995 to 18,500
members by 2011 with bank assets in excess of Rs 15 crores
(around $4M)
25. Contributions as IT and
Communications Minister
• Minister for IT & ITES sectors with export revenues .
• Developed ITIR(information Technology Investment Region) in Hyderabad.
• Collaborated with MNCs like Microsoft and Google
1. The square foot usage of the IT companies grew from 3.5 Million SFT in 2010 to 6 Million SFT
in 2012, a growth upwards of 70% in just two years!!
2. The IT employment in the state grew from 264,375 in 2010 to 318,624 in 2012, a growth
over 20%.
3. The IT exports from the state in the state grew from Rs. 33,482 Cr (US 6.7 Billion) in 2010 to
Rs. 40,646 Cr (US $ 8.12 Billion) in 2012, a growth of 21% over two years.
4. There are 1268 companies registered in the state today compared to 194 about 10 years
ago.

28. Introduction of Mee Seva
Services
MeeSeva – bringing Government services to the citizens
electronically in a hassle free manner
• MeeSeva initiative was created for the first time in the country in the state of Andhra Pradesh.
• To date over 104 services are delivered through the MeeSeva initiative.
• By October, the number of services is expected to reach 331.
• About a Million services to citizens are delivered electronically on average per month over the
last 18 months. The number of services to citizens per month is expected to go up to 3 Million in
the coming months with increased service offerings.

Medium Irrigation
•75 Irrigation projects and creating jobs for over 100,000
people thus directly affecting 60 million lives.
•Optimal utilization of 1,250 TMC of riparian water 70%
of which would otherwise would be wasted into the sea.
•Building of longest irrigation tunnel in the world – 28
miles long.
•Project included building world’s 2nd highest lift
irrigation scheme and first rubber dam in Asia.
•One of the largest irrigation canals, flood flow canal of
Sriram Sagar Project with a capacity of 22,000 cusecs
During his term, he was responsible for the planning and undertaking of 75 Major
irrigation projects under Jala Yagnam (“Jala Yagnam” – Jala = Water, Yagnam = massive
endeavor) that would bring over 10 million acres under irrigation at a total outlay of
$40B. Of this potential, over 2.2 million acres were brought under irrigation at an
expenditure of nearly $12B between 2004-2010. The Irrigation projects to bring the
balance 7.8 Million acres under irrigation are commissioned and presently under various
stages of completion.

30. Cabinet Portfolio for Major and
Medium Irrigation
• Food Production increased from 13.9 million tonnes in 2003-2004 to 19.6 million tonnes in 2011.
• The massive Jala Yagnam effort coupled with better water management system contributed significantly
to the growth in food production. (13.7 Million Tonnes in the FY2003–04 rose to 19.9 Million tonnes in
FY2008 – 09 in the state of Andhra Pradesh.) The state in absolute measure of food production is in 3rd
position in the country an impressive jump compared to the 6th position prior to the Jalayagnam in
2003-04.
• Jalaygnam entailed construction of a massive number of dams, barrages, aqueducts, rivulets, canals,
tunnels and other structures diverting water from rivers, rivulets and the streams have become
landmarks.

33. Promoting Engineering and
Mathematics
• Instituted the Best Engineer of the Year and the Best Mathematician of the Year Awards in
coordination with NIT Warangal and University of Hyderabad.
• The award carries Rs 100,116(around $1500) cash prize and a citation on behalf of Ponnala
Foundation.
• This award was instituted with a view to catering to the ever-growing need for mathematicians,
because according to a US estimate, we need more than a million mathematicians in future.

Academic Help and Support
Instituted Ponnala Gold medal at Kakatiya University, Warangal, Telangana for the top
ranker in the three year degree course leading to Poultry Science and has been
awarding it since 2000.
Provided funds for Ponnala Gold medal at Yogi Vemana University, Kadapa, AP for the
top ranker in the three year degree course leading to Sciences and has been awarding it
since 2006.
Provided several poor and under-privileged students from Warangal district as well as
across AP advise, books, supplies, tuition fees, lodging accommodations,
recommendation letters, other financial support to attend institutions of higher learning
in India and abroad ever since returning to India in 1978.
