2. Introduction
Table Tennis is a common sport that could be
played inside the gymnasium, esp. when it is windy
outside. But this can also be played outside if there
is no gymnasium or a room available. This game
can be played in singles wherein there are two
players competing. This can also be played in
doubles wherein there are two teams competing.
3. History of Table Tennis
O Table tennis first originated in England as
a higher class amusement in 1880’s
O Table tennis got its nicknames ping pong
and wiff waff because of the sound
generated while playing
O The first ping pong balls were made of
knotted string, not untill 1901 did people
start using the present day celluloid balls
4. O In the 20th century table tennis was banned in
Russia
O In the 1950’s the innovation of the rubber
rackets changed the game dramatically
O Ping Pong was first introduced as an Olympic
sport in 1988
5. Equipments
O Ball - 2.7 gram, 40 mm diameter
O Table - c 2.74 m (9 ft.) long, 1.52 m (5 ft.)
wide, and 76 cm (30 inch) high with a
Masonite (a type of hardboard) or similarly
manufactured timber, layered with a
smooth, low-friction coating. The table
surface is divided into two halves by a
15.25 cm (6 inch) high net.
6. O Racket - The average size of the blade is
about 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) long and
6 inches (15 cm) wide wooden blade
covered with rubber on one or two sides.
O Net - usually made of a dark-colored
mesh, which is clearly visible against a
white or an orange ball.
7. How to play
O The objective of the game is to hit the ball by
a racket and return it to the opponent over the
net. Each player is given five consecutive times
to start the game.
8. Rule
O The objective of the game is to hit the ball
with the racket or paddle held in the hand
over the net. The ball must strike on the
server’s side of the court before striking the
top of the table on the opponent’s court.
O Striking the ball before it bounces is not
allowed.
O Whoever commits a mistake looses a point
and your opponent gains a point.
9. O A player or pair first scoring eleven (11)
points is the winner of the game, unless
both players or pairs score 10 points, the
game shall be won by the first player or
pair subsequently gaining a lead of two
points.
O A match is won in a three out of five
games.
