4. Mpala Mentorship Days
“I learned that the hippo’s poop is
very nutritious to other
animals that live in the water. I
also discovered that between
the fenced and unfenced areas
the fenced one looks greener
and has relatively higher
vegetation. I really enjoyed the
trip and hope that some day I
will be back. I really enjoyed
scooping mud and examining
the insects found in it. I really
had fun!”
“My trip was amazing because I
came to know more about
birds and I feel that I am in a
better position to explain to
others amazing things about
birds. Thank you very much!”
5. Women in Conservation Lectures
• Women in science
• Dialogue between students
and researchers
• Career advice
7. Mpala Live!
• Our purpose is to excite and
delight visitors with Mpala’s
wonders and channel their
passion into real-time
conservation biology
• The wildcam is the core of an
outreach program aimed at
educating viewers about the
animals and peoples of Mpala
• Interactive components to the
project actively engage
participants in life
at Mpala
Showcasing the Principles
of Conservation Biology in
Action
8. The Website
• Live Cam
• Field Guide introduces Mpala’s
animals
• Classroom offers lesson plans
and activities
• Live Lessons from the Bush
showcasing Mpala researchers
Soon to come:
Citizen Science application allowing viewers to
participate in conservation research at the
Centre
Interactive Map combining regional history
and geography
9. Citizen Science
• This feature allows online visitors and students to contribute to
wildlife research at Mpala
• Citizen scientists can log-in and note species and behavior at the
hippo pool and upload their comments to a time log
• The log contributes to a 24/7 record of wildlife activity at the
watering hole
Split into groups to learn about birds, plant ecology, rodent trapping, Grant’s gazelle, elephants and hippos
Learn what researchers do, how they do it, why it is important
hands on experience
New understanding of the world around them
Applied science
Female (and male) researchers from Mpala give short talks about their work to Daraja students
Gives these girls real life role models, accomplished women to look up to; opens a dialogue between them
Researchers offer career advice on how they got to where they are today
Previous talks: Shivani (EwasoLions), Everlyn Ndinda (Hippo Project)
August graduation 2013
Skills learned: computer, lab/experiments, communication, field
Work experience: learn to deal with difficulties
Cam: 24/7 view of Hippo Pools, can log in and view animals (hippos, elephants, wild dogs, zebras, monkeys, etc.)
Field guide: goes through tracks, scat, basic facts, conservation knowledge
Classroom: curriculum developed for both a US and Kenyan classroom
Materials will be tied to Live Lessons from the Bush as well as the wildcam.
Classrooms will interact directly with each other and the Mpala primary school.
Live lessons: elephants with Sandy, baboons with Meg Crofoot;
Webcasts by Mpala researchers allow online visitors to learn more about scientific field research
interact with experts via live chat or email.
Webcasts from other Mpala residents (herders, trackers, and teachers) introduce viewers to the complexities of living with wildlife.
