The amended (for reading online) version of the slides from my presentation at UX Camp Brighton 2019 - https://www.uxcampbrighton.org/redux-2019
Before I started my new role at Madgex, I took the opportunity to run a few workshops to help plan out my first 90 days as successful as possible. This presentation details the output of the workshop and learnings I've had during my first 90 days.

2. Hello reader
I hope you enjoyed the presentation and workshops, and found
them useful. It took me quite a while to make and put together. As
I don’t do sponsored runs, bungee jumps etc. I wondered whether
the following might work.
If you find the appendix section useful, and you’re able to, please

3. The slides I presented on the day won’t make much sense without
me stood next to them explaining everything. I’ve changed this
version to give an overview of what I talked about.
If you’re interested, the original slides are here - https://

These slides look…wordy
4. Why run a 90 day plan
workshop (and presentation)?
I’d recently accepted a new role at Madgex.
A question from an old colleague / friend put the idea of 90 day
plans in my head.
A persuasive UXCB co-organiser ‘suggested’ I contributed
something to UXCB 2019.
That led to me asking the clever people at UXCB to help me
answer what my first 90 days at Madgex would look like.
That persuasive guy is relentless and now it’s a presentation.
5. Are 90 day plans a thing?
Some googling led me to a few articles suggesting they’ve been
around for a while - see appendix.
The positive change cycle suggests we should both recognise
how change will impact us, and that having a plan could help us
navigate it.
I found a 90 day plan useful in my first 90 days at Madgex.

7. The positive change cycle
The theory goes, that just as there is a negative cycle of emotions
experienced when a change is not to our liking, there is also a
positive change cycle (see appendix for more info).
What the positive change cycle shows is that, immediately after
the change, we'll experience 'un-informed optimism', before
descending rapidly into 'informed pessimism’. Having a 90 day
plan should help us keep moving forward to ‘informed optimism’.
8. Output from the workshops
I ran two workshops, a practice one and one at UXCB.
The output varied considerably.
I did a lot of affinity mapping to sift through all the output.
There were 4 main themes, and multiple groups within those
themes.
One of the themes was similar to the GDS principals - see appendix.
Check the framework in the appendix for all the details.
9. What are your thoughts on 90
day plans now?
Everyone’s plan will probably be a bit different.
Don’t stress over the timings too much.
Don’t rely too much on on-boarding. You’ll miss opportunities.
But, you could use the output to improve your team’s on-
boarding.
Plan and schedule, otherwise you’ll run out of time.
It’s very similar to running a design discovery phase of a project.

13. Thoughts on running a UXCB workshop
1. Plan for 15 mins (you definitely don’t have 20 mins). Don’t pick anything too
complicated.
2. Pick a session slot after lunch (or a break) so you can get in and set the room up. Ask a
friendly volunteer to help you.
3. Pick the right room (eg one with wall space). Ask a friendly volunteer to help you.
4. Bring your own stationery. You might be able to borrow a few Sharpies from the
volunteers.
5. Have a flexible agenda. You don’t know how many people will turn up, they might need
to share stuff!
6. Remember to take photos.
7. Enjoy it!
