seeding sullivant
A place-based project that will celebrate the historical and reinvigorated life of Sullivant Hall in Ohio State University.
The project was proposed to work with students to excavate the rich historical information about the building, its
namesake and its relationship to university life through archival research, oral history, and the integration of newly
generated documentation.
Seeding Sullivant involves embedding the environment with physical beacon hardware that localizes access to the
content database of historical and significant information about the building. People would access this information
(text, virtual 3D models, animation, recorded oral histories, and video clips) with mobile devices that are triggered at
beacon points throughout the building.
Visiting this building becomes a dynamic interactive experience making innovative use of technology that is in most of
our students’ hands every day.

Tim & Lynn Williams
Tim and Lynn just retired and feel that it is about the time for them to really enjoy the life together.
They can have brunch together in the morning, take a walk in the park and then go home to spend
a good afternoon at home doing their hobbies. Most of the time, Tim will watch some shows and
sports on television while Lynn will be reading and checking new recipe for dinner with her new
Kindles.
ATTITUDES & BELIEFS Family comes first!
Tim and Lynn are parents from middle class who are very proud of their daughter, a dance student
who is graduating this year. They have always been very supportive throughout their daughter’s
college years and never miss any of their daughter’s performances.
LIFESTYLE We love sharing, staying active and motivated.
Tim and Lynn are interested in maintaining a healthy and social lifestyle. They spend most of their
time reading, exercising, catching up and hanging out with friends, attending events in the cities.
VALUES & GOALS Live and learn!
They are eager to learn and experience new things. At the same time, family goes first! They still
value the time they their time with their daughter and would always love to catch up with her school
life and anything about OSU.
“There are so many things to learn and experience. We are trilled
everyday and can’t wait to share with our friends!”

Pilot Test Methodology
The designer of Sullivant Flipper conducted 4 times of usability test using a prototype app that
was created by Flinto located in designer’s iphone 5 and a laptop to show the 5 assigned tasks
that would be tested by the participants. During the test, a camera was held by the designer
to videotape the whole testing including how each participant completed the test, participants’
reactions, gestures, comments, navigation choices and feedback.
The Sullivant Flipper usability test was taken 4 times in 2 different places. The first 2 times were
done by 3 of designer’s friends who knew nothing about Sullivant Hall until it was explained at
the test. The test location was held at one of participants’s apartment. The other 2 times were
taken in classroom at ACCAD of Sullivant Hall by 4 volunteer students who had had some
basic understanding about the project before the test.
The purpose of the test was to evaluate the usability, findability and user-friendliness of the inter-
face design, information accessibility and the creativity of the experience the app brought. The
participants were asked to complete the 5 tasks assigned and each test time varies depends on
the participants. The shortest one took around 6 minutes and the longest lasted around 11
minutes. (Notes: the participants were not designer’s targeted stakeholders so the test result
might deviate from real situation.)
INTRODUCTION
PARTICIPANTS
PURPOSE OF THE TEST
Pilot Test Result
In general, all the participant agreed that Sullivant Flipper was a straight forward and user friendly
app platform to explore Sullivant hall with nice touch of aesthetic and fun; however, there was
still a room for improvement in the future to make the project more successful. The problems
they found and difficulties they met could be categorized into three aspects, one was limitations
in Flinto that might have affected app operation flow; second was interface design problems;
third were a few of findings about participants’ background, willingness and state of mind which
might also affect the test result.
The limitations in Flinto that cause frustration to
the participants were:
• Almost every participant had problem with
sensitivity issue.
• The lack of variety of gestures acceptance such
as, swipe, zoom in and out with two fingers,
double hit.
• The lack of feedback when the button was
clicked, hit and hovered.
The problems found with interface design were:
• The lack of visual hint pulling out calendar to
access history media.
• The lack of“back” or“close” button in few
screens that allow user to escape from the cur-
rent screen.
• Tab hierarchy problem.
The findings about participants were:
• The lack of familiarity to the iOS system or
smart devices
• The lack of familiarity to icons
(Note: None of the participant was blamed;
however, knowing participants backgrounds
helps to identify and improve design problems.)

Speaking of the greatest joys of summertime, grilling will be the first activity
comes to mind. The superior flavor and experience, affordability and fun
atmosphere that outdoor cooking provides are top reasons why summer will
be all about the cookout. However, grilling is not as enjoyable when it comes
to food preparation, carrying the grill and transporting, cleanup and dispose.

Consuming less and keeping my apartment bulk-free
often results in a good habit of saving money. I spend
less, and I consume less, so my apartment remains clean
and organized. I feel I’m in control when I make the
decisions to live minimally.
I want to send and receive affection in an environment
that encourages warm communication and gathering.
I am selfless and socially-inclined, and need to feel
that within any group or environment I am a part of,
everyone is enjoying themselves.
Encourage the idea of community within a group.
Encourage social exchange, and an environment
that others can feel comfortable in. Be concise, be
convenient, and most importantly be efficient and leave
out the complications.
Encourage the atmosphere for me and others, rather
than demand the utmost attention from everyone.
Something that contributes to- rather than takes away
from- on the individual and group levels is a plus.
Think reusable. Think compact. Ergonomically self-
spoken, but functionally simple and efficient. Avoid
colors and form that speak loudly. Precision is already
Simplicity, affordability, and reusability are must-haves.
By example, I rely on my stainless steel water bottle and
tap water filter as opposed to buying endless amounts
of bottled water. I may be a poor college student, but my
expectation to consume and spend are high and valued
as responsibilities.

DESIGN IMPLICATIONS DESIGN IMPLICATIONS DESIGN IMPLICATIONS
DESIGN IMPLICATIONS
DESIGN IMPLICATIONS
I want others to see me for who I am, and
enjoy the uniqueness of every individual.
I’ll feel comfortable and secure when people
around me can be brought close together.
I tend to focus on the communicating with others
as opposed to the actual event or object that may
bring people together.
FEATURES:
It should be..
ACCESSIBLE: It is quick and easy to use; maximal efficiency. I can provide for myself
and for others easily. I can be in control of its function, guiding it to whatever level of
desirability.
REWARDING: It rewards my care and effort to please myself and a group by being
forgiving. For example, clean-up and storage should not be a hassle. The level of
use and the ergonomics of its function should provide a feeling of achievement or
accomplishment post-use.
CONTRIBUTIVE: A center piece for the main event or social gathering, without
demanding utmost attention to the point of deterring from social exchange. Entirely
a supportive role to the atmosphere—like the perfect basket which holds all things
necessary to support the ideal picnic outing.
COMPACT: It should be minimal in usage and design. It can’t have bulk in terms of
shape and weight.
ATTRIBUTES:
It has..
VISIBLE ORGANIZATION: It has clear sections defining in self-explanatory ways how
the product will be used.
MINIMAL AND RESOURCEFUL PACKAGING: The packaging itself is part of the product
and pivotal to its usage. Materials are environmentally friendly. Clean-up should function
as part of the process of the product’s use.
LITERAL STRUCTURE: There is no bulk and no gimmick to the product. Simplicity
and clarity are read when viewing the form and composition of its entirety. Structure
contributes directly to the function of the product. Clear and concise instruction.
MODULAR FORM: The product will conveniently address itself appropriately during
different stages of its use. Perforations and geometric folds will maximize compactness,
unfolding to its intended use when needed. Compartments performing different
function will be clear.
I appreciate a minimalistic lifestyle.
I try to save money and exhibit simple taste.
I am a warm-hearted individual who surrounds himself with the company of
my friends and family. I am 20 years old, committed to being a full-time student
studying journalism at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.
“I want to feel dependable
and included and I want to be
conscientious, resourceful and
successful.”
What kind of lifestyle they have? What they use and buy
and what they have for gathering and party?
They tend to rush their daily routines on weekdays and seek for more casual and laid-
back lifestyle on the weekend. When it comes to having meals in weekdays, they either
skip the meals or wind on them in order to gain more time to complete their tasks.
Efficiency, productivity and simplicity are what they look for when they make decision
on purchases.
Disposable and packaged products are our stakeholder’s top choice. Hassle-free, easy
clean up and convenience are what they look for when speaking of daily grocery
shopping and gathering preparation.
There are barbecue grills for every need, budget, lifestyle and occasion. Depending
on the values we seek, our choice of grills would vary. Quality, reliability, safe
performance, durability, portability and of course, ease of use and cleaning are part
of our concerns.

Ideation
Concept Sketches
This concept is fun and creative;
however,“does it really need to be this complicated?“
If considering including grilling grate in this whole kit, then how do I package it
without changing its intriguing form?
It was my favorite concept. I love the simplicity and straightforwardness of it.
Moreover, it solves the grilling grate issue. Nevertheless, according to the feedback I
got from class,“would a guy feel excited carrying it?“
“Is the form of the product too feminine for a guy to carry?”
Same concept to the previous cone shaped grill. When portability is one of my
concern, I care about how people carry it and if they feel compact enough to carry.
Pyramid shaped is cool. Somehow modern; however, is it really the best way to
carry it? I would like to explore more.
This is the one I am going for! I love the simplicity, foldability and portability of it. It
looks urban and I am sure it will not create hassles like previous concepts do when
carrying it. Unfortunately, the grilling grate problem happens again.
Since I love this concept, I decided to explore more and refine it..
Material Study
MAIN STRUCTURE/corrugated cardboard
portability: lightweight, compact, foldable
durability: strong enough to hold and charcoal
affordability: cheap, easy to access
recyclable: easy post- grilling clean up
CHARCOAL HOLDER/ aluminum foil
the melting point of aluminum is about 1220 degrees Fahrenheit.
Charcoal made at 300 °C (572 °F) is brown, soft and friable, and readily
inflames at 380 °C (716 °F); made at higher temperatures it is hard and
brittle, and does not fire until heated to about 700 °C (1,292 °F).
portability: lightweight
nice conductor of heat: absorb heat well, reduce charcoal cool-down wait

The most difficult part for me while re-designing was actually
the base, where contains motor and functions. Where the knob
and buttons should be and how the base accommodates them in
terms of form were my primary concerns .
I started out with some form studies and used the photos of
current blender I had as underlay to find the right proportion of a
blender. Every component matters. It took me a while to know how every single component interrelate
to each other and how they work.
Blender/ form study
Kettle/ ergonomics and function
The most challenging part for me to re-design and build this kettle was the
ergonomics of handle. I did some market researches and look how other
kettles’ handle looks like. The thickness, the length, the shape and the angle
of the handle all matter.
The minimalistic form makes it stand out from other kettles in the current
market. The mouth is clean and sharp. There no need to have extra piece to
build it. Also, the see through feature tells you exactly how mush water you
left with out opening the lid.

  • 3. seeding sullivant A place-based project that will celebrate the historical and reinvigorated life of Sullivant Hall in Ohio State University. The project was proposed to work with students to excavate the rich historical information about the building, its namesake and its relationship to university life through archival research, oral history, and the integration of newly generated documentation. Seeding Sullivant involves embedding the environment with physical beacon hardware that localizes access to the content database of historical and significant information about the building. People would access this information (text, virtual 3D models, animation, recorded oral histories, and video clips) with mobile devices that are triggered at beacon points throughout the building. Visiting this building becomes a dynamic interactive experience making innovative use of technology that is in most of our students’ hands every day. more information can be found at: http://accad.osu.edu/researchmain/gallery/project_gallery/seeding-sullivant-hall.

  • 8. Pilot Test Methodology The designer of Sullivant Flipper conducted 4 times of usability test using a prototype app that was created by Flinto located in designer’s iphone 5 and a laptop to show the 5 assigned tasks that would be tested by the participants. During the test, a camera was held by the designer to videotape the whole testing including how each participant completed the test, participants’ reactions, gestures, comments, navigation choices and feedback. The Sullivant Flipper usability test was taken 4 times in 2 different places. The first 2 times were done by 3 of designer’s friends who knew nothing about Sullivant Hall until it was explained at the test. The test location was held at one of participants’s apartment. The other 2 times were taken in classroom at ACCAD of Sullivant Hall by 4 volunteer students who had had some basic understanding about the project before the test. The purpose of the test was to evaluate the usability, findability and user-friendliness of the inter- face design, information accessibility and the creativity of the experience the app brought. The participants were asked to complete the 5 tasks assigned and each test time varies depends on the participants. The shortest one took around 6 minutes and the longest lasted around 11 minutes. (Notes: the participants were not designer’s targeted stakeholders so the test result might deviate from real situation.) INTRODUCTION PARTICIPANTS PURPOSE OF THE TEST
  • 9. Pilot Test Result In general, all the participant agreed that Sullivant Flipper was a straight forward and user friendly app platform to explore Sullivant hall with nice touch of aesthetic and fun; however, there was still a room for improvement in the future to make the project more successful. The problems they found and difficulties they met could be categorized into three aspects, one was limitations in Flinto that might have affected app operation flow; second was interface design problems; third were a few of findings about participants’ background, willingness and state of mind which might also affect the test result. The limitations in Flinto that cause frustration to the participants were: • Almost every participant had problem with sensitivity issue. • The lack of variety of gestures acceptance such as, swipe, zoom in and out with two fingers, double hit. • The lack of feedback when the button was clicked, hit and hovered. The problems found with interface design were: • The lack of visual hint pulling out calendar to access history media. • The lack of“back” or“close” button in few screens that allow user to escape from the cur- rent screen. • Tab hierarchy problem. The findings about participants were: • The lack of familiarity to the iOS system or smart devices • The lack of familiarity to icons (Note: None of the participant was blamed; however, knowing participants backgrounds helps to identify and improve design problems.)
  • 10. Senior Thesis Project Project Background Speaking of the greatest joys of summertime, grilling will be the first activity comes to mind. The superior flavor and experience, affordability and fun atmosphere that outdoor cooking provides are top reasons why summer will be all about the cookout. However, grilling is not as enjoyable when it comes to food preparation, carrying the grill and transporting, cleanup and dispose.

  • 12. Persona/ who are the stakeholders The Youth of InspirationPhillip Conrad Consuming less and keeping my apartment bulk-free often results in a good habit of saving money. I spend less, and I consume less, so my apartment remains clean and organized. I feel I’m in control when I make the decisions to live minimally. I want to send and receive affection in an environment that encourages warm communication and gathering. I am selfless and socially-inclined, and need to feel that within any group or environment I am a part of, everyone is enjoying themselves. Encourage the idea of community within a group. Encourage social exchange, and an environment that others can feel comfortable in. Be concise, be convenient, and most importantly be efficient and leave out the complications. Encourage the atmosphere for me and others, rather than demand the utmost attention from everyone. Something that contributes to- rather than takes away from- on the individual and group levels is a plus. Think reusable. Think compact. Ergonomically self- spoken, but functionally simple and efficient. Avoid colors and form that speak loudly. Precision is already Simplicity, affordability, and reusability are must-haves. By example, I rely on my stainless steel water bottle and tap water filter as opposed to buying endless amounts of bottled water. I may be a poor college student, but my expectation to consume and spend are high and valued as responsibilities. VALUES & GOALS ATTITUDES & BELIEFS BEHAVIORS IDEAL SOLUTION TOOLS & ENVIRONMENT DESIGN IMPLICATIONS DESIGN IMPLICATIONS DESIGN IMPLICATIONS DESIGN IMPLICATIONS DESIGN IMPLICATIONS I want others to see me for who I am, and enjoy the uniqueness of every individual. I’ll feel comfortable and secure when people around me can be brought close together. I tend to focus on the communicating with others as opposed to the actual event or object that may bring people together. FEATURES: It should be.. ACCESSIBLE: It is quick and easy to use; maximal efficiency. I can provide for myself and for others easily. I can be in control of its function, guiding it to whatever level of desirability. REWARDING: It rewards my care and effort to please myself and a group by being forgiving. For example, clean-up and storage should not be a hassle. The level of use and the ergonomics of its function should provide a feeling of achievement or accomplishment post-use. CONTRIBUTIVE: A center piece for the main event or social gathering, without demanding utmost attention to the point of deterring from social exchange. Entirely a supportive role to the atmosphere—like the perfect basket which holds all things necessary to support the ideal picnic outing. COMPACT: It should be minimal in usage and design. It can’t have bulk in terms of shape and weight. ATTRIBUTES: It has.. VISIBLE ORGANIZATION: It has clear sections defining in self-explanatory ways how the product will be used. MINIMAL AND RESOURCEFUL PACKAGING: The packaging itself is part of the product and pivotal to its usage. Materials are environmentally friendly. Clean-up should function as part of the process of the product’s use. LITERAL STRUCTURE: There is no bulk and no gimmick to the product. Simplicity and clarity are read when viewing the form and composition of its entirety. Structure contributes directly to the function of the product. Clear and concise instruction. MODULAR FORM: The product will conveniently address itself appropriately during different stages of its use. Perforations and geometric folds will maximize compactness, unfolding to its intended use when needed. Compartments performing different function will be clear. I appreciate a minimalistic lifestyle. I try to save money and exhibit simple taste. I am a warm-hearted individual who surrounds himself with the company of my friends and family. I am 20 years old, committed to being a full-time student studying journalism at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. “I want to feel dependable and included and I want to be conscientious, resourceful and successful.”
  • 13. What kind of lifestyle they have? What they use and buy and what they have for gathering and party? They tend to rush their daily routines on weekdays and seek for more casual and laid- back lifestyle on the weekend. When it comes to having meals in weekdays, they either skip the meals or wind on them in order to gain more time to complete their tasks. Efficiency, productivity and simplicity are what they look for when they make decision on purchases. Disposable and packaged products are our stakeholder’s top choice. Hassle-free, easy clean up and convenience are what they look for when speaking of daily grocery shopping and gathering preparation.
  • 14. There are barbecue grills for every need, budget, lifestyle and occasion. Depending on the values we seek, our choice of grills would vary. Quality, reliability, safe performance, durability, portability and of course, ease of use and cleaning are part of our concerns. • 18. Concept Sketches This concept is fun and creative; however,“does it really need to be this complicated?“ If considering including grilling grate in this whole kit, then how do I package it without changing its intriguing form? It was my favorite concept. I love the simplicity and straightforwardness of it. Moreover, it solves the grilling grate issue. Nevertheless, according to the feedback I got from class,“would a guy feel excited carrying it?“ “Is the form of the product too feminine for a guy to carry?” Same concept to the previous cone shaped grill. When portability is one of my concern, I care about how people carry it and if they feel compact enough to carry. Pyramid shaped is cool. Somehow modern; however, is it really the best way to carry it? I would like to explore more. This is the one I am going for! I love the simplicity, foldability and portability of it. It looks urban and I am sure it will not create hassles like previous concepts do when carrying it. Unfortunately, the grilling grate problem happens again. Since I love this concept, I decided to explore more and refine it..

Where the knob and buttons should be and how the base accommodates them in terms of form were my primary concerns . I started out with some form studies and used the photos of current blender I had as underlay to find the right proportion of a blender. Every component matters. It took me a while to know how every single component interrelate to each other and how they work. Blender/ form study
  • 36. Kettle/ ergonomics and function The most challenging part for me to re-design and build this kettle was the ergonomics of handle. I did some market researches and look how other kettles’ handle looks like. The thickness, the length, the shape and the angle of the handle all matter. The minimalistic form makes it stand out from other kettles in the current market. The mouth is clean and sharp. There no need to have extra piece to build it. Also, the see through feature tells you exactly how mush water you left with out opening the lid.
