Culturally Competent Strategies The cultural composition of America is rapidly changing. Researchers estimate that by the year 2050 more than half

Every student and teacher has a cultural identity. Their cultural identity is defined by their beliefs, values and behaviors. Their cultures can be different
among others, which creates diversity. Classrooms full of students and teachers with different backgrounds can be beneficial for students and teachers
themselves. By exploring and accepting many differences and cultures of people among them, they are taught to understand cultural differences, they
from a strong sense of their own cultural identity. Once students and teachers are aware of cultural differences, they become aware of racism and can
fight to eradiate it. Through their unbiased understanding of the differences between cultures and races, they are able to come to a point of acceptance

This resource allows children to broaden their understanding of cultural diversity and the significance of maintaining equality. After children have
read or listened to 'Whoever you are', it is hoped that not only their language and literacy skills have strengthened, but also their knowledge. It is
crucial that children are introduced to this topic from an early age and are able to discuss the differences of cultures, although focus primarily on what
makes everyone the same. Children will learn about respect, which is a key concept of cultural diversity and should be able to utilize this attribute in
their learning environment and everyday lives.
It is evident that this children's book acknowledges the importance of culture and home learning. This is due to the fact that the author involves children
from around the world and explains that even though we all appear different, we are all the same. It is vital that children can learn in their environment
and feel safe, therefore encouraging equality will allow this to happen. Although it is not a bilingual text, 'Whoever you are' ensures that children can
read in their environment and discuss the meaning of cultural diversity with their family. The values that are interpreted from the book such as respect
can also be discussed within the family or at the kindergarten (Bredekamp, 2016).
Teaching and learning strategies
1. Picture talks is a learning tool that is utilized in early education and involves a teacher displaying illustrations in a book or a photograph, then
asking the children to observe and share what they see. This learning experience will become of benefit to children when reading 'Whoever you are'
because it will give them an opportunity to visualize and discuss the meaning of the picture, which in this case illustrates diversity (Fellowes & Oakley,
2014, pg. 113). The book contains pictures of children from cultures and a globe with children surrounding it, which symbolizes equality.
2. Another learning tool that could be applied whilst reading this book is conducting a class meeting, which will enable the children to gather together
to discuss the importance of cultural diversity and share their experiences, whether it be about their

Introduction
Issues of diversity are problematically, inaccurately and unauthentically understood and represented, throughout the education system. This includes
problems related to cultural diversity, gender and sexuality. Culture is the sum of attitudes, customs and beliefs that distinguishes one group of people
from another. The complications related to cultural diversity include: identity confusion; language barriers; social isolation; and a lack of representation
in the curriculum. These issues are demonstrated when exploring the lives of refugee and Indigenous students. Gender is the social and cultural
differences between males and females; and sexuality is a person 's sexual orientation or preference. Issues related to gender and sexuality in the
pedagogical setting include; gender bias, gender norms, gender roles, gender stereotypes, bullying and exclusion. Many of these problems occur
because the curriculum is written by upper class, white males and the teaching body, as a whole, lacks individual diversity. This means that diverse
children are not well represented in the curriculum and their beliefs and customs are not supported in classrooms.

My Personal Reflection : Cultural Diversity
Since I started this class, I have a learned a great deal about cultural diversity in the classroom and abroad. My perspective has changed slightly but my
knowledge of this subject has improved. In my family, my father taught me about the civil rights movement and the evils of segregation in the U.S. My
parents taught me to be tolerant of all humans, no matter what they look like, how they dress, or their sexual orientation. My family has always been
liberal thinkers who taught me the dark history of racism and bigotry in this country. As an educator I would be accepting to all race, creeds, and
religious peoples.
In my original personal narrative, I mentioned that I grew up in a mostly white middle class town with a 15% Latino population. In some ways, I grew
up in a town that is in the forefront of a national discussion about increasing multiculturalism and acceptance of Latino Americans. We have come to
realize that not all illegal immigrants are criminals here to do us harm. Some are people who have been here many years, raised families and
contributed to our society. During my childhood, I had friends that were Korean and Latino descent, and I am grateful to have experience with those
diverse cultures. In this class and in a previous teaching class, I worked with and got to know students of different ethnicities. We learned in class
about legislation that would provide English learners with more support while they are assimilating and learning English (Buenrostro,2017). This can
only benefit everyone as we raise the level of proficiency for the newest students. We Americans may have different cultures and traditions, but we all

During this semester, I had the opportunity of working with a class of 2nd Graders in the Long Beach area. Even though in my last two serve rotations

While reading some of the journals from my classmates in this class, I realized that cultural frictions exist, as stated in their own words, not only in the

"We need to help students and parents cherish and preserve the ethnic and cultural diversity that nourishes and strengthens this community – and this

name is Teyha Graham and we met through her internship at CitiFamily Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Teyha is 25% African American and
75% German. She was very open to me interviewing her. Actually, what happened was I was telling her about my assignment and told her I needed
one more person to interview for my class and she said, "Interview me." I thought to myself that would be awesome, but how are you diverse from

From childhood family and the Rwandese community of my culture were main contributors to my perceptions of other cultures. Growing up in
Africa made it difficult for me to adopt a positive perception of cultural diversity due to that the media and education system failed to promote any
form of multiculturalism or basic knowledge of other cultures. As there was a greater emphasis on family and abiding by the 'laws' of the

My Experience With Diversity And Diversity
As I reflect over my life, I appreciate the many diverse experiences I've came to encounter. My experience with diversity dates back to birth. I am
from a small rural town, Moss Point, MS. and notably the last state to abolish slavery. The town currently has a population of 13,704 people and
consists of 73% Blacks or African Americans, 23% Caucasian, 1% Hispanic or Latino and 1% bi–racial.
Regardless of my town's homogeneous population, I grew up accepting diversity and valuing individual differences even amid the same racial
group. One of the first experiences of diversity I can vividly recall is the various religious beliefs within the Black community. My parents believed
"exposure to the world around you" was one of the primary factors for raising a well–rounded individual. Therefore, we often visited different churches
of various faiths.
Within my own family, there were different doctrines. My great–grandmother was Pentecostal, my grandmother is a Baptist and my mother is an
Atheist. While everyone seemed to have different belief systems, I participated in them all. I had to learn to adapt to each religious institution. In one
church I was allowed to wear pants and women could also be pastors; whereas, in another, women could only wear full length dresses and were not
allowed in the pulpit.

1.From my perspective, when I think of diverse contexts, I think of a great variety of influences and events interrelated to a particular situation. The

2.From Chapter 1 in our Reframing Organizations text, the symbolic frame makes the most sense to me because it focuses on the issues of meaning
and faith. It puts ritual, ceremony, play, story and culture at the heart of the organizational life. From my perspective, the symbolic frame doesn't focus

During this summer semester, I have learned many important skills concerning my internship at Retreat of Lancaster County. These skills can be
divided into four categories – social and cultural diversity, helping relationships, group work, and assessment. Retreat of Lancaster County is an
inpatient drug and alcohol rehabilitation center with both rehab and detox levels. At this location, I have been able work with patients entering

Internship Application At Retreat this semester, I was able to put my counseling experience and personal knowledge into practice by counseling
people of different social and cultural backgrounds and experiences. I was able to work with individuals of different faiths, with substance use issues,
severe trauma, and individuals with previous experience in prostitution and the mafia. A few examples of these cultural differences can be given in
describing some clients that I worked with. The first individual with the most differences was an 60 year old African American, male lawyer who
had previous criminal convictions and was highly addicted to multiple substances. In this example, this individual was different from me in every
category except our religious backgrounds. He grew up in poverty in a city setting and was able to claw his way out of that situation and was able to
help others who had a similar criminal history in his career as a judge. However, as his relationships with his ex–wife appeared his addiction came

The general education teacher is the teacher of record, and is responsible for the child, even though the child may have an IEP. In my personal
experience at Cordova School High working teachers in the special education department, most use the full Inclusion system given the title "Case
managers" a Special education teacher works with a General education teacher helping a student with a disability to achieve his or her goals out line
in an Individualize educational Planning (IEP). This helps a child with disabilities to receive his or her educational achievement. In my own personal
experience as an instructional aide I have worked with many children receiving special education services.

current job I work with two students' with a cerebral syndrome of not walking, talking and loss of hand and eye coordination (taking notes) becoming
a scriber writing down information for students. This helps to ensure the student is learning the material. Writing also gives him or her ways to
understand, engage in dialog with other peers and ask questions about the assignments as the teacher is speaking to the class. This for me and the
student is a great way to Aleve's stress as well as time management during a class period when taking quizzes or test.

Mississippi. It was right after we had gone to Disney World for the first time. In Florida, there were many courteous people of many races. This was
the first time in my life that I had ever seen that many people at one time, but right after was the first time that I had ever encountered racism before.
Ashley, Timmy, and I had walked from 5 Guys over to in and Out. While we were walking between the two restaurants, someone in a white Mustang
convertible drove past us and yelled, "Get out the way NIGGERS!" They then cut through the parking lot to a nearby street. I could almost set my
clothes on fire with the amount of rage that gathered within me. I had never in my life met a person with hatred directed at someone just because of
something they cannot change. Although I do not have any knowledge about ethics of many races, I believe that race relations are progressing in the
United States, but many races do not do not understand other races or do not intermingle with other races outside of a professional environment.
Firstly, my initial impressions of this class is that it needs to be a requirement for all high schools in the United States. This class is very interesting
