Sarah always wore designer clothes, and was looked up to by all the lower classman. She used to brag about her parents knowing everyone in town,
and how she could land a job or go to any college she wanted to without even trying. On the other hand, I grew up in a one–parent household that never
had a lot of money. My mom had to keep three jobs in order to provide the necessities for us. My mom emigrated from Hungary with limited
resources. She could speak no English and barley had any money. She was willing to do what ever it took to give us a decent life style. We did not
go out to restaurants often and she would always try to save money by limiting extra expenses. Within a short period of time we were considered
middle class average family. I was taught early on the value hard work. The values that were installed in me were very different then Sarah. I was
always taught that hard work and dedication would pay off. Sarah was thought that she never had to do anything to receive the good things out of
life. We have kept in touch over the years, and the part of me that used to be jealous was now thankful for not having everything handed to me. I

When I was younger, my indecision was at times a challenge to my educational endeavors. I often found it difficult to choose one thing, as my

During my undergrad you can see I had a rough first term and bounced between B's and C's while at the University of Oregon. School has always been
hard for me and I really have to apply myself and utilize all my learning resources in order to do well in most classes. While I did earn my bachelor's
degree I definitely did not make it an easy road for myself as social activities, sports and lack of motivation really got in my way. I never had a "dream
job" in mind and I never really knew what I was going to do with my degree so I went through the motions and did the bare minimum in order to
receive my degree. Now I am in a career field I LOVE and I can truly see myself in for many years and I have a motivation to learn like I have never
had before.
4.What are your strengths & challenges as a learner and how will you address your challenges?
My organizational skills is one of my biggest strengths as a learner, I am a visual person when it comes to learning and remembering things. I am
very big on flash cards, color coordinating my notes and highlighting topics I may not understand as well. Where learning is a struggle for me is that
I just can't read something once and it saves into my memory. I really have to read things a few times and process is it in a way that makes sense in
my brain. I get major test anxiety even when I know the material and during my undergrad I found that sitting down with my professor before exams
and talking through the subjects

My Personal Goals as an English Major The English major is my means of personal improvement and I see it as a luxury that I have afforded myself;
nevertheless, I intend to serve as many people as I can by sharing my gained experience and knowledge in my future job, in my role as a private
citizen, and as a family member. When I was fresh out of high–school, I made the error of choosing a career field in banking, thinking that a paycheck
is more important than the immaterial satisfaction that a worker should gain from doing their job. Although I did appreciate certain aspects of my
business apprenticeship that I value to this day, especially the overall learning experience and time of growth, I always sensed that I was missing
my purpose. The practical banking and business knowledge tends to change rather quickly in today's pace of our global economy. I guess my first

I have grown used to the benefits of learning and reflecting and the meaningful activities involved in mentoring my children, and I plan on turning such
activity into my full–time occupation after my graduate education. Thus, I have started researching graduate programs that will allow me to apply for a
career at a public elementary or middle–school as a speech and language pathologist. These therapists help and support children and their parents who
have a language and speech deficit that inhibits their learning and overall development. My hope is that I will experience this line of work as a
meaningful career, and I hope to become adept at professionally advising and mentoring children to get over any debilitating speech

I want to step out of my comfort zone and challenge myself in the arena of public speaking. I want to meet new people. I want to share my ideas
with people who haven't always known me. I want a boat. I want to enjoy myself at work as much as possible. I want to grow. I want to learn. I want to
feel challenged. I want to create something that is mine. I want to make my parents proud. I want the feeling of accomplishment. I want more
responsibility. I want more money.

In the first class, I met some very nice and interesting people from all different backgrounds but with one common goal, a degree. Then my team
was created. I met with my team on Tuesday night. Can I tell you how much I dig them? Although one fella couldn't find the place, him and I have
spoken via email several times. The other two, Craig and Mike, made it and we chatted and bonded. I learned a lot about each of them. I think the
consensus is that we're going to enjoy this class and look forward to the next year and a half. School doesn't feel dark and gray, it feels like an
adventure I'm looking forward to embarking on.
Another reason I have returned to finish school is because I've been working towards it for the last decade or so. Like most youth, I thought the world
owed me something. Wow, was I wrong. Not that I've reached mid–life but I have survived the quarter–life crisis. I guess that's my generation's way of
asking the timeless question "what do I want out of life?" I guess it helps to feel like I'm a part of something bigger and that I'm not alone. It helps
explain the apprehension of actually having to grow up and realize that stability and finances are important and that the things I want in life are ever
changing, just like me. Life moves on whether I'm ready or not and having the tools to succeed and prosper is not only necessary but immeasurably
valuable. These tools help to ultimately transition into adulthood.
