Defining Courage
Courage Ask anyone what courage means to them and their responses will vary vastly. People have different definitions or descriptions of different
terms because of the many differences in life. As a senior in high school; my experiences, thoughts, and opinions are drastically different from those of
a senior citizen. We may not share the same definition oncourage. As a middle class teenager in America; my experiences, thoughts, and opinions
differ drastically with those of a homeless teen in Africa. Her definition of courage may be far different from mine. Life is different for everyone, and
changes in life are often and unpredictable. Within the vast opinions and definitions, from people or a dictionary, one thing holds true. Overall, courage

What is Courage? Nelson Mandela once said, "I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he
who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear." Courage can be witnessed in various forms, but ultimately courage has the same basis within
each construct of the word. Whether overcoming a difficult task or doing something positive for the greater good, courage complies with overcoming
fears and performing unnecessary tasks to better something else. For an act to be courageous it must comply with the following criteria. Firefighters,
policemen, doctors, and soldiers are all examples of people who are courageous. All of...show more content...
Mother Teresa was a courageous woman because she dedicated her life to helping others. Throughout life, she chose to help the needy, poor, sick,
and helpless people of the world every day of her life. Her actions are considered courageous because she chose to help people, rather than seeking
reward for helping others. Mother Teresa is an example of how courage can be expressed through the service of large amounts of people, rather than
just one or a few. If Mother Teresa chose to work for reward, her behaviors would not have been considered courageous. For example, working at a
soup kitchen or non profit organization is not courageous, because in each instance, there is a reward for the work the individual is putting in
(community service hours and money). Another criteria for courageous behavior is to face a personal fear. This can include a fear of heights, weapons,
violence, peer pressure, and/or another person. Standing up to a bully, as either the victim or an outsider, can be considered one of these courageous
acts against fear. Typically, in a bullying situation, it can be extremely difficult to stand up to a bully because the fear of the possible repercussions or
retaliation. Or, possibly, the victim could be intimidated just because of a lack of power. The act of standing up to a bully is extremely courageous
because it is choosing to do the right thing with integrity and standing up for yourself or

Courage is defined as the willingness to help people make a change. In other words, courage is an act of bravery. It is the necessity to overcome
fears and achieve a desired goal. It does not regularly involve a heroic act to be courageous. Courage can be derived in any form, one has to look
past his fears in able to acquire this feature. Fear is something that exists in every person, whether it's big or small. When a person is able to go against
their fears and overcome them, then it said that this person is courageous. However, courage can occur anytime, and often in our everyday lives. It is
the only thing that gets us through the hard times we face. Civil courage is one form of courage. Civil courage is courage shown towards one's fellow

with politeness. In addition, serving the country or population. However, risks are always involved, whether it is significant or not. Civil courage
does not encourage violence, and disobeying the law. Its limits are within the law. One great example of civil courage is doctors. Doctors risk
their everyday life helping patients and offering care. It is a doctor's duty to fulfill those tasks. The main purpose for doctors is to save lives and
serve others. It shows great courage since risk is accompanied with the action. It is likely for a patient to die or experience an unusual treatment, but
it is the doctor's duty to make sure this doesn't happen. This, on the contrary, perceives the reputation of the doctor. This presents civil courage and
its characteristics. Another example of civil courage is lifeguards. Lifeguards' job is to watch over the people and to make sure nothing goes out of
the contrary. In case of an accident, where a shark attacks a person, the lifeguard is opposed to save this person. By doing so, the

What Is Courage Definition Essay
Most people think they know what courage is. They think it is simply just showing bravery. However, there is much more to it than just a simple word
and definition. A common definition of courage is the moral strength to face a fear. That is a basic definition that is very true, but I do not think that it
should be described in a simple sentence. Courage is a characteristic that can set someone apart from other people. Along with wisdom, love, and
honesty, courage is one of the most important characteristics a person can have. It sets people apart from cowards and it is very noticeable. People
might see bravery and courage as the same two things, but bravery is only a part of courage. In a situation of fear or danger, a person must have the
courageous trait to show courage. Most of the time, courage cannot be faked in the moment. Courage is a complex concept that involves overcoming
fears, believing in yourself even being aware of possible outcomes, and being...show more content...
No matter what it is, if someone believes in something that they could get made fun of for, harmed, or pushed away because of it, they should
courageously stand up for it. I am a Christian and there have been many times where I wonder if it is worth getting made fun of and being
different from the normal agenda. My take on it is that it is worth it because someday, I will get to enter the gates of heaven. The Bible tells us to
stand up for what we believe and we will be rewarded. Of course, it would be much easier to be a coward and just not stand up for Christianity, but
it is important to me and the Lord helps me to be courageous in situations where I am mocked for it. In a life or death situation, most people would
just deny that they are a Christian. I am not sure if I would be able to but that would make me a coward. Thankfully, most people do not have to face
situations similar to that but it is just food for

Definition Of Courage Essay
The written definition of courage in the Merriam–Webster dictionary is the capability to do something that you know is challenging or dangerous.
When asking a majority of people, they will state that courage is when you have the guts to face a fear or having the willingness to go above and
beyond when needed. However, my definition of courage is having the ability to deal with surrounding negativity, including negative retorts made by
others. Nonetheless, all the definitions have one thing in common, which is to have a sense of confidence. Following this further, when a person has
the ability to deal with surrounding negativity, they have an abundance of courage because the average person would take the negativity to heart. As
that negativity piles up with previous negativity, it would lead to a spread....show more content...
Having courage shows how much self–control a person has because they allow themselves to stay intact instead of crashing. During most of my
elementary years, I remember being picked on by my "peers", whether if it was for telling my teacher every single wrong action my classmates
were doing or if I scored another faultless score on a test. At that time, I didn't know how to control my emotions and occasionally ended up teary
eyed. As time progressed and middle school started, I was constantly said comments that I wasn't fond of, and over time I learned to not have them
affect me because at the end of the day, they are the ones taking advantage of the life they have and will soon have consequences. Just because I move
on, it doesn't mean that one or two comments can't still affect me because it can, but they are bottled up. If I would have never had the courage to
silence the negativity others would bring upon me, I truly believe that the comments and statements would have made me want to surrender because

Courage is the thing a person uses to do what a person wants and gives bravery When a person needs it. It's always there and never leaves a person
no matter what, but for some people it is hard to access than for others who have trouble with it. Courage for some could be different for someone

going to war, and for someone else it's asking the person they like to the big dance. For many in the black kids in 1954 it was desegregating the

Courage Definition Essay
Courage by definition is the ability to withstand failure or face your fears. To me, courage is a way of life. It helps conserve my principles in life
and to follow them with all my heart. Courage gives me the purpose to stay on track with my goals laying far away, without deterring from my path.
It is the strength I get from within to do my best at anything I am doing, whether it be a chore or any daily life struggle. Courage helps me stay humble
and envision the compassion I have for my set goals. It is courage that helps me persevere through all my fears regarding school work. No matter
how difficult the work can be, it is courage that helps me fight through all the hard work so that I can look at a complete task, a fruit of my struggle

However, to focus on one major example of courage, I would like to think of the time my pet cat passed away. I had grown up with Garfield till the
day he passed away, I was only 9 years old. I told myself that I had to hold it in and not allow myself to be weak, to not allow sorrow overcome me.
As I have aged since then, I look back and think that was probably the most courageous thing I have done thus far. I had taught myself the starting
steps of being an adult even though I was very young but I taught myself how to gather my courage and myself to look forward with life. I would
ensure I would not drown myself in the memories of my pet cat or affect my daily life decisions. Another example can be when I had spoken up
against bullies who were picking on my friend, back in school when I was much younger. It took me a lot of courage to be brave and actually speak
up against a wrong action. Even though I was only one person against a lot of them, my action was just and courageous, hence no one dared to speak
back at me or even tried to justify their actions. Courage is what assists me in driving my life towards a hopeful

Courage: what is it? Many of us ask ourselves what is courage, do I have courage? And the answer is yes, everyone has courage. The definition of

I've done courageous things in my life, nothing huge, but little things. For example, riding my bike for the first time without training wheels, and
learning to play a new sport. Those things took courage, but one of the things that took the most courage in my life is when I got really sick. When I

example of your own personal will, and determination. Having courage proves that we can believe in our self, it can show us the strength we thought
we never had. Its takes a lot of bravery to overcome a fear or trial. We all face different hardships in our lives like losing a loved one, running out of

Famous American trial lawyer Gerry Spence once said: "Fear is the stuff of courage. We cannot be brave without fear. One who faces
unreasonable danger is not courageous unless that person has first felt fear and overcome it. He is only foolish. I know of no persons who are
brave who are not first afraid." The original definition of 'courage' is routed from the Latin word 'cor', meaning 'heart'. There are so many definitions
to explain exactly what courage is, but courage means so much more than all those simple definitions. Courage is every time I kiss my sick father
goodbye, unaware if this will be the last time I get to see his heart warming smile. Courage is the first time we stepped onto campus with absolutely no

When you hear the word courage, what's the first word that comes to mind? Do you think of that person has Happy, Strong, intelligent? Many people
today think courage is a simple word that can be used for many things without much thought of what it truly means. It is a term that can be put towards
someone who did something brave for their country, or someone standing up for a victim of bullying. Courage means the ability to do something that
frightens one. Courage is something that should come to us naturally something you should be born with. That's something you shouldn't have to think
about it your body should just tell you that you need to stick up for yourself and don't let people just push you around and talk to you any kind of way.

most of the time they are just as scared as you are. Courageous people are people who are not selfish and they always put other first and they don't get
caught up in drama that they need to be in.
We can say that "courage" is being strong even though you are afraid, but on the other hand it is taking risks without knowing what is going to
happen in the future. Bravery, heroism, fearlessness, determination. These words can all be view from a point of being synonyms to the word

Courage Definition Of Courage
The definition of courage is the quality of spirit that allows a person to face difficulty without fear or doubt. This quality is what drives those who
have a purpose to survive. In the short story "The Sniper;" By Liam O'Flaherty and, in the excerpt of The Trouble with Geniuses, Part II," By
Malcolm Gladwell courage is displayed as an act of commitment. In the book "Outliers," Chris Langan had a knack for mathematics and philosophy.
Many people described him as being gifted. His younger brother Mark Langan often compared him to Robert Oppenheimer, a physicist famously
known for the development of the nuclear bomb in World War II. Chris however, did not have the determination to become a famous physicist. He
was kicked out of college more than once for unnecessary reasons and eventually gave up on his education. The sniper however, was a soldier and did
not fear death. He used his wits to fool the other sniper and managed to buy time for his escape except it did not pay off in the end as his brother
was his enemy. So, in both stories courage is brought up as a description and almost like a goal for both characters. This trait is a prime example of a
quality required to overcome adversity in life.
Adversity in one's' life can affect many aspects of their personality, with these obstacles this person could use courage as a path to conquer their own
goals. In the "Sniper" the main character had been in a lethal situation as he was under fire in a city in Dublin. But the

The word courage, brings with it, ideas of a brave warrior. A hero who comes out against all odds. Why is it that nearly everyone pictures the same
thing? It is indeed a correct version but definitely not the only one. Courage is sticking through pain and adversity to overcome any situation or event
thrown at a person in life.
When discussing courage, many people are able to apply this to a never ending possibility of situations. When I think of courage, as well as many
others, it is associated with stories of knights in shining armor saving the damsel in distress. Courage is almost always exaggerated when it doesn't
necessarily need to be. Courage comes in all shapes and sizes.
Courage can be found in a woman who is fighting each and everyday to get rid of cancer. She goes through hours and hours of demoralizing
treatment and accepts the side effects and consequences of doing so. Yet, she never gives up because she knows that her will and determination
will prevail. A man, who just lost his wife, and first ever true love, puts a smile on his face and returns to work. A child, at age seven, who loses
their first pet dog and true companion to a car accident. A teenage girl was thrown onto the streets by her deranged family, gets a doctorate degree and
discovers a new and revolutionary cure. This is how courage is shown in everyday life.

requires infinite sacrifices. There is no cap on the specific amount of sacrifice that a person gives up. A person can lose

Essay on Courage: Definition and Importance
Courage is a necessity to overcome fears and achieve a desired goal. Fear is something that exists in all of us. There is no hero or any particular
courageous figure that is without fear. Being fearless is not required to be courageous, one simply has to look past or overcome their fears to possess
this great quality. When overcoming fears and going against the norm, there are always risks involved. There are different types of risks that come
about. Someone could risk life or limb, while others risk their reputation. Either risk is serious enough that a person must have courage to endure that
particular risk. Courage can occur anytime, anywhere, and often in our everyday lives. Everyone will experience courage no matter how young,...show

"The agent told me to be sure and keep my people away, as they were very poorly dressed. I did not do as I was told."(298) Even though it took some
time, she eventually overcame her fear and her feelings of inferiority and stood up to Father Wilbur and the other white men. There are many risks
involved when a person comes in contact with courage. A person's peers or the people close to them can be highly judgmental, especially if what you
are doing clashes with common beliefs or behaviors. This stands very true when looking at the life of Martin Luther King Jr. His peers were not only
the African American population, but also white upper–class clergymen. In the first line of Martin Luther King Junior's letter to the clergymen he
states that he is "confined here in the Birmingham City Jail."(303) Dr. King took a great risk of being judged, solely by writing a letter to his
peers. He knew that the clergymen already had their own ideas about him, but he took an even bigger risk by writing them from his jail cell.
Another major risk that people take while being courageous is risking their life for the lives of others. In "And the Band Played On," Randy Shilts tells
the story of a young female doctor, Grethe Rask, who risked her life because she worked in a clinic that didn't even provide the "В…basics [such] as
sterile rubber gloves or disposable needles."(330) He goes on to describe even more horrifying details about

Courage Definition Of Courage
Courage is a cornerstone of wartime leadership. Throughout history, Courage has been the defining virtue of the warrior and for good cause. Warriors
face frightening and dangerous situations; and the wartime leader must lead these warriors from the front by displaying the courage they expect to see
in their men. Without courage, a leader cannot lead from the front nor do the right thing during unfavorable times.
Merriam Webster's Dictionary defines Courage as, "mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty."

parts: physical courage and moral courage....show more content...
Strategically speaking, the battle of Belleau Wood was a crucial point for the war effort. If the woods were lost to the German forces would have an
easy time moving on to take Paris, which in turn would strike a significant blow against French morale. As the marines arrived they faced an immediate
physical threat of being cut down by machine gun fire, but refused to let fear stop them and continued across an open field into a hailstorm of bullets
resulting in a thousand deaths. This action undoubtedly took courage for the average Marine and easily meets the definition of physical courage;
continuing on despite the risk of injury. The rest of the battle followed suit, with marines being outnumbered, outgunned, under fed, under slept and still
continuing on in the face of adversity.
Many Marines displayed courage in the Battle of Belleau Wood; however, First Sergeant Dan Daly became a marine corps legend by leading from the
front while demonstrating one of the most staggering displays of Physical

Choosing Courage
Through the means of books, movies, television, and everyday encounters, courage is shown in many ways throughout life. Wondering how my peers
defined this abstract term pushed me to question some of them. The first three people I asked said "courage is persisting through something even
though it seems impossible." My research found this to be the most common response from teenagers because it can be applied in many parts of
life–meaning it must be relatable–and is easy to comprehend. Commonly, teenagers deal with school drama, family issues, and the balance of classes
and depending on what is going on in their lives, many show courage by persevering. Only one student had an outlier definition:"courage is simply a
choice." Merriam Webster Dictionary defines this concept as "mental or moral strength to venture." Scrounging my brain for my own witty definition, I
came to the conclusion that it is a combination all the definitions stated above, yet not restricted to just these three....show more content...
Both of these could very well describe someone who acts courageously. But they are synonyms. When someone has hope, they believe that whatever
they are facing will eventually subside and become resolved; on the other hand courage is taking action and doing something impactful. Usually an
internal emotion, hope can be expressed by triggering an action, whereas courage describes how one acted. Strength is the ability to overcome
something and defeat it using physical or mental abilities: muscle, wit, or knowledge. Genetically, strength can be passed from parent to child–unlike
courage, which is a choice. We need to combine hope and strength. After hearing many different definitions, courage is the choice to harvest–to the best
of one's ability– the power to overcome a situation that seems nearly impossible, while putting all fears and distractions

Defining Courage

  • 1. Defining Courage Courage Ask anyone what courage means to them and their responses will vary vastly. People have different definitions or descriptions of different terms because of the many differences in life. As a senior in high school; my experiences, thoughts, and opinions are drastically different from those of a senior citizen. We may not share the same definition oncourage. As a middle class teenager in America; my experiences, thoughts, and opinions differ drastically with those of a homeless teen in Africa. Her definition of courage may be far different from mine. Life is different for everyone, and changes in life are often and unpredictable. Within the vast opinions and definitions, from people or a dictionary, one thing holds true. • 2. Courage : The Definition Of Courage? Lindsay Roach BYU Independent Study ENGL 057 13 November 2017 What is Courage? Nelson Mandela once said, "I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear." Courage can be witnessed in various forms, but ultimately courage has the same basis within each construct of the word. Whether overcoming a difficult task or doing something positive for the greater good, courage complies with overcoming fears and performing unnecessary tasks to better something else. For an act to be courageous it must comply with the following criteria. Firefighters, policemen, doctors, and soldiers are all examples of people who are courageous. All of...show more content... Mother Teresa was a courageous woman because she dedicated her life to helping others. Throughout life, she chose to help the needy, poor, sick, and helpless people of the world every day of her life. Her actions are considered courageous because she chose to help people, rather than seeking reward for helping others. Mother Teresa is an example of how courage can be expressed through the service of large amounts of people, rather than just one or a few. If Mother Teresa chose to work for reward, her behaviors would not have been considered courageous. For example, working at a soup kitchen or non profit organization is not courageous, because in each instance, there is a reward for the work the individual is putting in (community service hours and money). Another criteria for courageous behavior is to face a personal fear. This can include a fear of heights, weapons, violence, peer pressure, and/or another person. Standing up to a bully, as either the victim or an outsider, can be considered one of these courageous acts against fear. Typically, in a bullying situation, it can be extremely difficult to stand up to a bully because the fear of the possible repercussions or retaliation. Or, possibly, the victim could be intimidated just because of a lack of power. The act of standing up to a bully is extremely courageous because it is choosing to do the right thing with integrity and standing up for yourself or Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Definition Of Courage Essay Ibrahim Abdel Raouf ESGL 3500 Courage is defined as the willingness to help people make a change. In other words, courage is an act of bravery. It is the necessity to overcome fears and achieve a desired goal. It does not regularly involve a heroic act to be courageous. Courage can be derived in any form, one has to look past his fears in able to acquire this feature. Fear is something that exists in every person, whether it's big or small. When a person is able to go against their fears and overcome them, then it said that this person is courageous. However, courage can occur anytime, and often in our everyday lives. It is the only thing that gets us through the hard times we face. Civil courage is one form of courage. Civil courage is courage shown towards one's fellow man...show more content... In addition, serving the country or population. However, risks are always involved, whether it is significant or not. Civil courage does not encourage violence, and disobeying the law. Its limits are within the law. One great example of civil courage is doctors. Doctors risk their everyday life helping patients and offering care. It is a doctor's duty to fulfill those tasks. The main purpose for doctors is to save lives and serve others. It shows great courage since risk is accompanied with the action. It is likely for a patient to die or experience an unusual treatment, but it is the doctor's duty to make sure this doesn't happen. This, on the contrary, perceives the reputation of the doctor. This presents civil courage and its characteristics. Another example of civil courage is lifeguards. Lifeguards' job is to watch over the people and to make sure nothing goes out of the contrary. In case of an accident, where a shark attacks a person, the lifeguard is opposed to save this person. By doing so, the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. What Is Courage Definition Essay Most people think they know what courage is. They think it is simply just showing bravery. However, there is much more to it than just a simple word and definition. A common definition of courage is the moral strength to face a fear. That is a basic definition that is very true, but I do not think that it should be described in a simple sentence. Courage is a characteristic that can set someone apart from other people. Along with wisdom, love, and honesty, courage is one of the most important characteristics a person can have. It sets people apart from cowards and it is very noticeable. People might see bravery and courage as the same two things, but bravery is only a part of courage. In a situation of fear or danger, a person must have the courageous trait to show courage. Most of the time, courage cannot be faked in the moment. Courage is a complex concept that involves overcoming fears, believing in yourself even being aware of possible outcomes, and being...show more content... No matter what it is, if someone believes in something that they could get made fun of for, harmed, or pushed away because of it, they should courageously stand up for it. I am a Christian and there have been many times where I wonder if it is worth getting made fun of and being different from the normal agenda. My take on it is that it is worth it because someday, I will get to enter the gates of heaven. The Bible tells us to stand up for what we believe and we will be rewarded. Of course, it would be much easier to be a coward and just not stand up for Christianity, but it is important to me and the Lord helps me to be courageous in situations where I am mocked for it. In a life or death situation, most people would just deny that they are a Christian. I am not sure if I would be able to but that would make me a coward. Thankfully, most people do not have to face situations similar to that but it is just food for Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Definition Of Courage Essay The written definition of courage in the Merriam–Webster dictionary is the capability to do something that you know is challenging or dangerous. When asking a majority of people, they will state that courage is when you have the guts to face a fear or having the willingness to go above and beyond when needed. However, my definition of courage is having the ability to deal with surrounding negativity, including negative retorts made by others. Nonetheless, all the definitions have one thing in common, which is to have a sense of confidence. Following this further, when a person has the ability to deal with surrounding negativity, they have an abundance of courage because the average person would take the negativity to heart. As that negativity piles up with previous negativity, it would lead to a spread....show more content... Having courage shows how much self–control a person has because they allow themselves to stay intact instead of crashing. During most of my elementary years, I remember being picked on by my "peers", whether if it was for telling my teacher every single wrong action my classmates were doing or if I scored another faultless score on a test. At that time, I didn't know how to control my emotions and occasionally ended up teary eyed. As time progressed and middle school started, I was constantly said comments that I wasn't fond of, and over time I learned to not have them affect me because at the end of the day, they are the ones taking advantage of the life they have and will soon have consequences. Just because I move on, it doesn't mean that one or two comments can't still affect me because it can, but they are bottled up. If I would have never had the courage to silence the negativity others would bring upon me, I truly believe that the comments and statements would have made me want to surrender because they Get more content on HelpWriting.net

It's always there and never leaves a person no matter what, but for some people it is hard to access than for others who have trouble with it. Courage for some could be different for someone else like for someone it could be coming out as gay to their family who is conservative because they think they might disown them, for another it's going to war, and for someone else it's asking the person they like to the big dance. For many in the black kids in 1954 it was desegregating the schools and many of them were beat up, killed, and got bricks and glass thrown at them. Nowadays for many in the middle east it is escaping their homes and all of their memories behind to escape the war. • 7. Courage Definition Essay Courage by definition is the ability to withstand failure or face your fears. To me, courage is a way of life. It helps conserve my principles in life and to follow them with all my heart. Courage gives me the purpose to stay on track with my goals laying far away, without deterring from my path. It is the strength I get from within to do my best at anything I am doing, whether it be a chore or any daily life struggle. Courage helps me stay humble and envision the compassion I have for my set goals. It is courage that helps me persevere through all my fears regarding school work. No matter how difficult the work can be, it is courage that helps me fight through all the hard work so that I can look at a complete task, a fruit of my struggle and courage. I had grown up with Garfield till the day he passed away, I was only 9 years old. I told myself that I had to hold it in and not allow myself to be weak, to not allow sorrow overcome me. As I have aged since then, I look back and think that was probably the most courageous thing I have done thus far. I had taught myself the starting steps of being an adult even though I was very young but I taught myself how to gather my courage and myself to look forward with life. I would ensure I would not drown myself in the memories of my pet cat or affect my daily life decisions. Another example can be when I had spoken up against bullies who were picking on my friend, back in school when I was much younger. It took me a lot of courage to be brave and actually speak up against a wrong action. Even though I was only one person against a lot of them, my action was just and courageous, hence no one dared to speak back at me or even tried to justify their actions. Courage is what assists me in driving my life towards a hopeful Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Definition Of Courage Courage: what is it? Many of us ask ourselves what is courage, do I have courage? And the answer is yes, everyone has courage. The definition of courage is, the ability to do something that frightens you. Everyone is scared of something in life, maybe it's the dark, or riding a bike. It takes courage conquer fears, like going on a roller coaster, or trying new food; maybe even sitting with the new kid at lunch. Everything takes courage, no matter how big or small. I've done courageous things in my life, nothing huge, but little things. For example, riding my bike for the first time without training wheels, and learning to play a new sport. Those things took courage, but one of the things that took the most courage in my life is when I got really sick. When I was eight years old I got pneumonia and was in the hospital for 10 days. • 10. Extended Definition Of Courage Famous American trial lawyer Gerry Spence once said: "Fear is the stuff of courage. We cannot be brave without fear. One who faces unreasonable danger is not courageous unless that person has first felt fear and overcome it. He is only foolish. I know of no persons who are brave who are not first afraid." The original definition of 'courage' is routed from the Latin word 'cor', meaning 'heart'. There are so many definitions to explain exactly what courage is, but courage means so much more than all those simple definitions. Courage is every time I kiss my sick father goodbye, unaware if this will be the last time I get to see his heart warming smile. Many people today think courage is a simple word that can be used for many things without much thought of what it truly means. It is a term that can be put towards someone who did something brave for their country, or someone standing up for a victim of bullying. Courage means the ability to do something that frightens one. Courage is something that should come to us naturally something you should be born with. • 12. Courage Definition Of Courage The definition of courage is the quality of spirit that allows a person to face difficulty without fear or doubt. This quality is what drives those who have a purpose to survive. In the short story "The Sniper;" By Liam O'Flaherty and, in the excerpt of The Trouble with Geniuses, Part II," By Malcolm Gladwell courage is displayed as an act of commitment. In the book "Outliers," Chris Langan had a knack for mathematics and philosophy. Many people described him as being gifted. His younger brother Mark Langan often compared him to Robert Oppenheimer, a physicist famously known for the development of the nuclear bomb in World War II. Chris however, did not have the determination to become a famous physicist. He was kicked out of college more than once for unnecessary reasons and eventually gave up on his education. The sniper however, was a soldier and did not fear death. He used his wits to fool the other sniper and managed to buy time for his escape except it did not pay off in the end as his brother was his enemy. So, in both stories courage is brought up as a description and almost like a goal for both characters. This trait is a prime example of a quality required to overcome adversity in life. Adversity in one's' life can affect many aspects of their personality, with these obstacles this person could use courage as a path to conquer their own goals. In the "Sniper" the main character had been in a lethal situation as he was under fire in a city in Dublin. But the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Definition Essay On Courage The word courage, brings with it, ideas of a brave warrior. A hero who comes out against all odds. Why is it that nearly everyone pictures the same thing? It is indeed a correct version but definitely not the only one. Courage is sticking through pain and adversity to overcome any situation or event thrown at a person in life. When discussing courage, many people are able to apply this to a never ending possibility of situations. When I think of courage, as well as many others, it is associated with stories of knights in shining armor saving the damsel in distress. Courage is almost always exaggerated when it doesn't necessarily need to be. Courage comes in all shapes and sizes. Courage can be found in a woman who is fighting each and everyday to get rid of cancer. She goes through hours and hours of demoralizing treatment and accepts the side effects and consequences of doing so. Yet, she never gives up because she knows that her will and determination will prevail. A man, who just lost his wife, and first ever true love, puts a smile on his face and returns to work. A child, at age seven, who loses their first pet dog and true companion to a car accident. A teenage girl was thrown onto the streets by her deranged family, gets a doctorate degree and discovers a new and revolutionary cure. This is how courage is shown in everyday life. I've done courageous things in my life, nothing huge, but little things. For example riding my bike for the first time without training wheels, and learning to play a new sport. Those things took courage, but one of the things that took the most courage in my life is when I got really sick. When I was eight years old I got pneumonia and was in the hospital for 10 days. When overcoming fears and going against the norm, there are always risks involved. There are different types of risks that come about. I did not do as I was told."(298) Even though it took some time, she eventually overcame her fear and her feelings of inferiority and stood up to Father Wilbur and the other white men. There are many risks involved when a person comes in contact with courage. A person's peers or the people close to them can be highly judgmental, especially if what you are doing clashes with common beliefs or behaviors. This stands very true when looking at the life of Martin Luther King Jr. His peers were not only the African American population, but also white upper–class clergymen. In the first line of Martin Luther King Junior's letter to the clergymen he states that he is "confined here in the Birmingham City Jail."(303) Dr. King took a great risk of being judged, solely by writing a letter to his peers. He knew that the clergymen already had their own ideas about him, but he took an even bigger risk by writing them from his jail cell. Another major risk that people take while being courageous is risking their life for the lives of others. In "And the Band Played On," Randy Shilts tells the story of a young female doctor, Grethe Rask, who risked her life because she worked in a clinic that didn't even provide the "В…basics [such] as sterile rubber gloves or disposable needles."(330) He goes on to describe even more horrifying details about Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Warriors face frightening and dangerous situations; and the wartime leader must lead these warriors from the front by displaying the courage they expect to see in their men. Without courage, a leader cannot lead from the front nor do the right thing during unfavorable times. Merriam Webster's Dictionary defines Courage as, "mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty." Strategically speaking, the battle of Belleau Wood was a crucial point for the war effort. If the woods were lost to the German forces would have an easy time moving on to take Paris, which in turn would strike a significant blow against French morale. As the marines arrived they faced an immediate physical threat of being cut down by machine gun fire, but refused to let fear stop them and continued across an open field into a hailstorm of bullets resulting in a thousand deaths. This action undoubtedly took courage for the average Marine and easily meets the definition of physical courage; continuing on despite the risk of injury. The rest of the battle followed suit, with marines being outnumbered, outgunned, under fed, under slept and still continuing on in the face of adversity. Many Marines displayed courage in the Battle of Belleau Wood; however, First Sergeant Dan Daly became a marine corps legend by leading from the front while demonstrating one of the most staggering displays of Physical Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 19. Definition Essay On Courage Choosing Courage Through the means of books, movies, television, and everyday encounters, courage is shown in many ways throughout life. Wondering how my peers defined this abstract term pushed me to question some of them. The first three people I asked said "courage is persisting through something even though it seems impossible." My research found this to be the most common response from teenagers because it can be applied in many parts of life–meaning it must be relatable–and is easy to comprehend. Commonly, teenagers deal with school drama, family issues, and the balance of classes and depending on what is going on in their lives, many show courage by persevering. Only one student had an outlier definition:"courage is simply a choice." Merriam Webster Dictionary defines this concept as "mental or moral strength to venture." Scrounging my brain for my own witty definition, I came to the conclusion that it is a combination all the definitions stated above, yet not restricted to just these three....show more content... Strength is the ability to overcome something and defeat it using physical or mental abilities: muscle, wit, or knowledge. Genetically, strength can be passed from parent to child–unlike courage, which is a choice. We need to combine hope and strength. After hearing many different definitions, courage is the choice to harvest–to the best of one's ability– the power to overcome a situation that seems nearly impossible, while putting all fears and distractions Get more content on HelpWriting.net
