Rare Plants at Moreau Lake State Park
Moreau Lake State Park is truly a treasure house of native and rare
plants. When I visit nature preserves in other parts of our state, I
feel lucky if I can find any native plants besides Skunk Cabbage and
Poison Ivy, due to deer overpopulation and rampant invasive
species.
But Moreau is remarkable for offering within its (soon-to-be) nearly
7,000 acres many varied, virtually pristine habitats that support a
huge variety of native plant species.
Among those native plants are:
• ONE that was rated as Extirpated (SX) in New York until it was
identified here at the park in 2019
• THREE that are classified by our state as Endangered (S1)
• TWO that are rated as Threatened (S2) and
• TWO that are rated as Rare (S3)

Many folks, when they think of
Moreau Lake State Park, think the
park consists of the beach and
the campgrounds and that’s
about all. But the park contains a
whole lot more than that!
Here's a recent map of the park
that reveals its extensive
holdings (although this map
doesn't yet show the nearly 1,000
MORE acres the park is due to
acquire, thanks to recent
acquisitions).

The park includes a big stretch of the Palmertown mountain
range that rises on the northern boundary of Saratoga County,
and also includes several miles of both banks of the Hudson
River. Here's a view from one of our mountain heights, looking
over the river and including some of the park's forested
acreage across the river into Warren County.

Within Moreau Lake State
Park are pine woods and
hardwood forests; lakeshore,
streambanks, swamp and
bog; soils that are basic and
others that are acidic; rocky
heights and soggy lowlands.
We even have three lakes:
Moreau Lake, of course, but
also Lake Ann way up in the
mountains, as well as the
beautiful Lake Bonita, which
was acquired only recently
along with the former Mt.
McGregor Prison lands.

Pringle’s Autumn Coralroot (An Extirpated Species)
Our most exciting find was one called Pringle’s Autumn Coralroot (Corallorhiza odontorhiza var.
pringlei), an orchid long believed to have disappeared from the state since 1903. It’s a very
small orchid, and I had been taking photos of it for years, always assuming it was a much less
rare species of coralroot.
Here is one of my photos - note that the
floret is open, revealing the pollen bundles.
It was this open throat that convinced an
expert on this species to confirm that we
had found this exceedingly rare orchid.
Since the discovery of this Pringle’s Autumn
Coralroot at our park, we have found several
new areas within the park where it grows. It
thus appears that this exceedingly rare
flower, once thought to have been extirpated
from the state, continues to have a happy
home right here in Moreau Lake
State Park.

Considering the extent and variety of habitats in the park, it’s really not too
surprising that I’ve found some truly rare species here. I imagine there are more as
yet to be discovered, but here are the ones I have found in the park, so far.
Whorled Mountain Mint (Endangered)
Just because a flower is considered to be rare, that doesn’t necessarily mean it
is gorgeous. For example, this rather weedy-looking plant is among the rarest
plants in the state. It’s called Whorled Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum
verticillatum var. verticillatum). Classified by the New York Natural Heritage
Program as an Endangered species, Whorled Mountain Mint is said to occur in
no more than 5 sites throughout the state. Moreau Lake State Park has the
healthiest and most abundant population of all, almost 300 flowering plants
concentrated on one sandy shore of a cove.

Large-leaved Avens (Endangered)
Here’s another flower that thrives at Moreau but almost nowhere else in the state,
according to the New York Natural Heritage Program. This is the Large-leaved
Avens (Geum macrophyllum var. macrophyllum). With its hardly ostentatious small
yellow flower, it may look like just another weed, but the Large-leaved Avens is
actually classified as an Endangered species in our state. But it’s hardly endangered
here in this park! When a state botanist joined park staff to assess this plant’s
population here, more than a hundred healthy specimens were found along one of
the park’s sunny trails.

Small-flowered Dwarf Bulrush (Endangered)
Here’s one more plant found at Moreau that is classified as Endangered in the state, and I still can’t
believe we managed to find it, it’s so tiny. Called Small-flowered Dwarf Bulrush (Cyperus
subsquarrosus), it’s so small we could have covered this entire plant with a single 50-cent piece! We
found thousands of this wee little flatsedge all along the sandy or pebbly shore of the lake. This plant
hadn’t been reported at Moreau since 1961, and we wouldn’t have found it yet, if the lake level hadn’t
fallen so low a few years ago.
The seeds had survived underwater all those years, and only when the water went down, exposing the
plants to the air, did they grow and bloom once more. Of course, most are well under water once more,
as lake levels have risen again. But I did find
a few still holding on along one sandy stretch
of shore. And now we know they’ll be back
again in great numbers when the water
retreats once again.

Small Floating Bladderwort (Threatened)
We also have in Moreau Lake State Park at least
two plants that are classified as Threatened
(S2), the next rarest class of plants, known to
exist in more than 6 and up to 20 sites in New
York State. One of those flowers is the Small
Floating Bladderwort (Utricularia radiata).
You won’t find this plant while hiking the trails
or walking the beach, but you might if you
paddle the river, where this plant goes floating
along on the river’s current. It’s held erect in
the water by those swollen “pontoons” that
radiate from its leafless stem. Because it has no
green leaves to photosynthesize, this plant has
to obtain its nutrients by other means, which it
does through the masses of tiny bladders that it
trails along underwater. Each of those tiny sacs
can suck in even tinier aquatic animals, which
the plant then digests and feeds on.

saratogawoodswaters.blogspot.com
Our second Threatened species is the Green Rock Cress (Borodinia missouriensis), a rather
weedy-looking Mustard-family plant whose tiny white flowers would draw no attention to its
presence among other trailside vegetation. But when it goes to seed, the Green Rock Cress is
easy to spot, with long slender siliques (seedpods) that arch away from the stem like the
cascading waters of a fountain.

Green Rock Cress (Threatened)
Great St. John’s Wort (Rare)
The next, still rare but somewhat more abundant category of unusual plants is called,
simply, Rare (S3). Plants in this category are known to exist in between 21 to 100 extant
sites. One of those sites is our own Moreau Lake State Park, where I have found two species
that fall within that classification.
First is the spectacularly
beautiful Great St. John’s
Wort (Hypericum
ascyron ssp. pyramidatum).
Of all the state-listed plants
we have in the park, this is
perhaps the showiest, with
blooms as big as two inches
across, and standing on stems
over 4 feet high. I have found
over 50 specimens of this
gorgeous wildflower in three
separate locations within the
park.

saratogawoodswaters.blogspot.com
A second plant we have in the Rare category is this pretty little thing called Small-flowered
Gerardia (Agalinis paupercula). Actually, when you see how abundantly this flower grows on
the sandy shores of Moreau Lake, it’s hard to believe it could ever have been considered a
rare plant, but that’s how it had been listed in the New York Flora Association’s Plant Atlas. I
did learn that it was recently moved from the Rare to the Watch list, which means it’s
becoming more abundant in the state. At any rate, it’s certainly not a rare plant in Moreau
Lake State Park and hasn't been for many years!

Small-flowered Gerardia (Rare)
These are all the state-listed rare species I’ve found, so far, within the
marvelously varied habitats of Moreau Lake State Park. And this does not
include the 15 species of native orchids, not necessarily rare but state-
listed as Exploitably Vulnerable and thus also protected by law, that also
thrive in the park. Or the many hundreds of other native wildflowers, not
necessarily rare, but as beautiful as the lovely Blue Flag in the photo
below. But who knows what other rarities might yet be discovered here?
I hope it’s obvious, from what I’ve reported here, that Moreau Lake State
Park sure is a great place to look for them.

Just a reminder: The picking or uprooting of ANY
plants in a state park (whether rare or common) is
strictly forbidden and is, in fact, illegal and
punishable by a fine. In the case of orchids,
especially, most species depend on soil fungi to
deliver the nutrients necessary for their survival, so
attempts at transplanting to a home garden will
usually result in the death of the plants.

Rare Plants at Moreau Lake State Park

  • 1. Rare Plants at Moreau Lake State Park Discovered, documented, photographed and presented by Jackie Donnelly 1 Copyright © 2020 | All Rights Reserved | Jacqueline Donnelly saratogawoodswaters.blogspot.com
  • 2. Rare Plants at Moreau Lake State Park Moreau Lake State Park is truly a treasure house of native and rare plants. When I visit nature preserves in other parts of our state, I feel lucky if I can find any native plants besides Skunk Cabbage and Poison Ivy, due to deer overpopulation and rampant invasive species. But Moreau is remarkable for offering within its (soon-to-be) nearly 7,000 acres many varied, virtually pristine habitats that support a huge variety of native plant species. Among those native plants are: • ONE that was rated as Extirpated (SX) in New York until it was identified here at the park in 2019 • THREE that are classified by our state as Endangered (S1) • TWO that are rated as Threatened (S2) and • TWO that are rated as Rare (S3) 2Copyright © 2020 | All Rights Reserved | Jacqueline Donnelly saratogawoodswaters.blogspot.com
  • 3. Many folks, when they think of Moreau Lake State Park, think the park consists of the beach and the campgrounds and that’s about all. But the park contains a whole lot more than that! Here's a recent map of the park that reveals its extensive holdings (although this map doesn't yet show the nearly 1,000 MORE acres the park is due to acquire, thanks to recent acquisitions). 3 Copyright © 2020 | All Rights Reserved | Jacqueline Donnelly saratogawoodswaters.blogspot.com
  • 4. The park includes a big stretch of the Palmertown mountain range that rises on the northern boundary of Saratoga County, and also includes several miles of both banks of the Hudson River. Here's a view from one of our mountain heights, looking over the river and including some of the park's forested acreage across the river into Warren County. 4 Copyright © 2020 | All Rights Reserved | Jacqueline Donnelly saratogawoodswaters.blogspot.com
  • 5. Within Moreau Lake State Park are pine woods and hardwood forests; lakeshore, streambanks, swamp and bog; soils that are basic and others that are acidic; rocky heights and soggy lowlands. We even have three lakes: Moreau Lake, of course, but also Lake Ann way up in the mountains, as well as the beautiful Lake Bonita, which was acquired only recently along with the former Mt. McGregor Prison lands. 5Copyright © 2020 | All Rights Reserved | Jacqueline Donnelly saratogawoodswaters.blogspot.com Lake Bonita
  • 6. Pringle’s Autumn Coralroot (An Extirpated Species) Our most exciting find was one called Pringle’s Autumn Coralroot (Corallorhiza odontorhiza var. pringlei), an orchid long believed to have disappeared from the state since 1903. It’s a very small orchid, and I had been taking photos of it for years, always assuming it was a much less rare species of coralroot. Here is one of my photos - note that the floret is open, revealing the pollen bundles. It was this open throat that convinced an expert on this species to confirm that we had found this exceedingly rare orchid. Since the discovery of this Pringle’s Autumn Coralroot at our park, we have found several new areas within the park where it grows. It thus appears that this exceedingly rare flower, once thought to have been extirpated from the state, continues to have a happy home right here in Moreau Lake State Park. 6Copyright © 2020 | All Rights Reserved | Jacqueline Donnelly saratogawoodswaters.blogspot.com Considering the extent and variety of habitats in the park, it’s really not too surprising that I’ve found some truly rare species here. I imagine there are more as yet to be discovered, but here are the ones I have found in the park, so far.
  • 7. Whorled Mountain Mint (Endangered) Just because a flower is considered to be rare, that doesn’t necessarily mean it is gorgeous. For example, this rather weedy-looking plant is among the rarest plants in the state. It’s called Whorled Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum verticillatum var. verticillatum). Classified by the New York Natural Heritage Program as an Endangered species, Whorled Mountain Mint is said to occur in no more than 5 sites throughout the state. Moreau Lake State Park has the healthiest and most abundant population of all, almost 300 flowering plants concentrated on one sandy shore of a cove. 7Copyright © 2020 | All Rights Reserved | Jacqueline Donnelly saratogawoodswaters.blogspot.com
  • 8. Large-leaved Avens (Endangered) Here’s another flower that thrives at Moreau but almost nowhere else in the state, according to the New York Natural Heritage Program. This is the Large-leaved Avens (Geum macrophyllum var. macrophyllum). With its hardly ostentatious small yellow flower, it may look like just another weed, but the Large-leaved Avens is actually classified as an Endangered species in our state. But it’s hardly endangered here in this park! When a state botanist joined park staff to assess this plant’s population here, more than a hundred healthy specimens were found along one of the park’s sunny trails. 8Copyright © 2020 | All Rights Reserved | Jacqueline Donnelly saratogawoodswaters.blogspot.com
  • 9. Small-flowered Dwarf Bulrush (Endangered) Here’s one more plant found at Moreau that is classified as Endangered in the state, and I still can’t believe we managed to find it, it’s so tiny. Called Small-flowered Dwarf Bulrush (Cyperus subsquarrosus), it’s so small we could have covered this entire plant with a single 50-cent piece! We found thousands of this wee little flatsedge all along the sandy or pebbly shore of the lake. This plant hadn’t been reported at Moreau since 1961, and we wouldn’t have found it yet, if the lake level hadn’t fallen so low a few years ago. The seeds had survived underwater all those years, and only when the water went down, exposing the plants to the air, did they grow and bloom once more. Of course, most are well under water once more, as lake levels have risen again. But I did find a few still holding on along one sandy stretch of shore. And now we know they’ll be back again in great numbers when the water retreats once again. 9Copyright © 2020 | All Rights Reserved | Jacqueline Donnelly saratogawoodswaters.blogspot.com
  • 10. Small Floating Bladderwort (Threatened) We also have in Moreau Lake State Park at least two plants that are classified as Threatened (S2), the next rarest class of plants, known to exist in more than 6 and up to 20 sites in New York State. One of those flowers is the Small Floating Bladderwort (Utricularia radiata). You won’t find this plant while hiking the trails or walking the beach, but you might if you paddle the river, where this plant goes floating along on the river’s current. It’s held erect in the water by those swollen “pontoons” that radiate from its leafless stem. Because it has no green leaves to photosynthesize, this plant has to obtain its nutrients by other means, which it does through the masses of tiny bladders that it trails along underwater. Each of those tiny sacs can suck in even tinier aquatic animals, which the plant then digests and feeds on. 10Copyright © 2020 | All Rights Reserved | Jacqueline Donnelly saratogawoodswaters.blogspot.com
  • 11. Our second Threatened species is the Green Rock Cress (Borodinia missouriensis), a rather weedy-looking Mustard-family plant whose tiny white flowers would draw no attention to its presence among other trailside vegetation. But when it goes to seed, the Green Rock Cress is easy to spot, with long slender siliques (seedpods) that arch away from the stem like the cascading waters of a fountain. 11Copyright © 2020 | All Rights Reserved | Jacqueline Donnelly saratogawoodswaters.blogspot.com Green Rock Cress (Threatened)
  • 12. Great St. John’s Wort (Rare) The next, still rare but somewhat more abundant category of unusual plants is called, simply, Rare (S3). Plants in this category are known to exist in between 21 to 100 extant sites. One of those sites is our own Moreau Lake State Park, where I have found two species that fall within that classification. First is the spectacularly beautiful Great St. John’s Wort (Hypericum ascyron ssp. pyramidatum). Of all the state-listed plants we have in the park, this is perhaps the showiest, with blooms as big as two inches across, and standing on stems over 4 feet high. I have found over 50 specimens of this gorgeous wildflower in three separate locations within the park. 12Copyright © 2020 | All Rights Reserved | Jacqueline Donnelly saratogawoodswaters.blogspot.com
  • 13. A second plant we have in the Rare category is this pretty little thing called Small-flowered Gerardia (Agalinis paupercula). Actually, when you see how abundantly this flower grows on the sandy shores of Moreau Lake, it’s hard to believe it could ever have been considered a rare plant, but that’s how it had been listed in the New York Flora Association’s Plant Atlas. I did learn that it was recently moved from the Rare to the Watch list, which means it’s becoming more abundant in the state. At any rate, it’s certainly not a rare plant in Moreau Lake State Park and hasn't been for many years! 13Copyright © 2020 | All Rights Reserved | Jacqueline Donnelly saratogawoodswaters.blogspot.com Small-flowered Gerardia (Rare)
  • 14. These are all the state-listed rare species I’ve found, so far, within the marvelously varied habitats of Moreau Lake State Park. And this does not include the 15 species of native orchids, not necessarily rare but state- listed as Exploitably Vulnerable and thus also protected by law, that also thrive in the park. Or the many hundreds of other native wildflowers, not necessarily rare, but as beautiful as the lovely Blue Flag in the photo below. But who knows what other rarities might yet be discovered here? I hope it’s obvious, from what I’ve reported here, that Moreau Lake State Park sure is a great place to look for them. 14Copyright © 2020 | All Rights Reserved | Jacqueline Donnelly saratogawoodswaters.blogspot.com
  • 15. Just a reminder: The picking or uprooting of ANY plants in a state park (whether rare or common) is strictly forbidden and is, in fact, illegal and punishable by a fine. In the case of orchids, especially, most species depend on soil fungi to deliver the nutrients necessary for their survival, so attempts at transplanting to a home garden will usually result in the death of the plants. 15 Copyright © 2020 | All Rights Reserved | Jacqueline Donnelly saratogawoodswaters.blogspot.com
