2. MEASUREMENT & EVALUATION
• Teaching Learning Process
1.Teaching aimed at influencing pupil behaviour
2.It has three aspects- objectives, learning experiences, learner
appraisal- its like a triangle.
Dr Paul Mathew
3. EVALUATION
• 1. it is needed for teaching – to find out if the goals are achieved? If
yes teaching is ok. Otherwise corrective action should be taken.
• 2. for curriculum, evaluation is needed to see if it is proper for
achieving goals of the society.
• 3. society needs evaluation to find out how far the goals are achieved
according to the needs of the society and if the investment made is
giving returns.
• 4. Parents want evaluation to see where their children stand.
• 5. it needed for quality control, to find out the success of a
programme, and to find out if the objectives are righty set.
4. NEED FOR EVALUATION
• 1. helps in effective decision making
• 2. helps to measure level of achievement
• 3. Helps in understanding how far classroom objectives are fulfilled
• 4. Needed for diagnosing learning difficulties
• 5. Needed to see how ready students are for a new learning
experience
• 6. Useful in forming groups- remedial or enrichment
• 7. Helps to find out problems of adjustment
• 8. Needed for preparing reports on student’s progress
5. . EVALUATION – DEFINITION
• According to C.E. Beeby - “the systematic collection
and interpretation of evidence leading, as part of a
process, to a judgement of values with a view to
action”.
• Key elements include – 1. Systematic collection of data
2. Interpretation of data 3. Judgement value 4. Aimed
at action
6. CHARACTERISTICS OF GOOD
EVALUATION
• 1. Validity -it means it tests what it is supposed to test. It tests the
behaviour outcomes set by the objectives. There should be no
irrelevant material.
• 2. Reliability – it means a measure of consistency with which the
test produces the same result under different but comparable
conditions. Evaluation gives reproducible scores with similar
population of students independent of individual evaluators.
7. CHARACTERISTICS OF GOOD
EVALUATION
• 3. Practicability – practical from the point of view of cost, time,
ease of application. For example, if a project which involves use of
the internet is given to village students in remote areas it will not
work.
• 4. Objectivity – it should be fair to all. The method and standard of
evaluation should be clear to all students.
• 5. Usability – results should be useful to the students, parents and
society.
8. EVALUATION AND MEASUREMENT
• 1. Measurement is precise, quantitative in values like
inches, yards, or marks of a student in a test/ Evaluation is
subjective judgement and appraisal
• 2. Broadfield and Murdock – “measurement is a process of
assigning symbols to dimensions of phenomena in order to
characterise the status of the phenomena as preciously as
possible. Evaluation is the assignment of symbols to
phenomena in order to characterise the worth or value of a
phenomena usually with reference to some social, cultural, or
scientific standard
9. EVALUATION AND MEASUREMENT
• 3. Wrightson – “Evaluation is a relatively new
technical term introduced to designate a more
comprehensive concept of measurement than is
implied in conventional test and examination”
• 4. So measurement is narrow/ evaluation is broad
• 5. Evaluation includes attitudes, interests, personality,
intelligence
• 6. Measurement is objective/ evaluation is subjective
10. FUNCTIONS/PURPOSE OF
EVALUATION INCLUDE
• 1. Prediction- of what can be done by the student in
future
• 2. Comparison- between performance
• 3. Diagnosis- to overcome deficiency in learning
• 4. Selection and classification- students remedial/
enrichment classes
• 5. Research- results can be used for research
11. FUNCTIONS/PURPOSE OF
EVALUATION INCLUDE
• 6. Guidance- to provide educational, vocational guidance
• 7. Prognosis - forecast for the future
• 8. Tests like scientific aptitude test battery, scientific aptitude
test for college students, teaching aptitude test battery, teaching
aptitude test etc are used for guiding students
