Legacy Newsletter Official June 2011
1. Painting Skills Legacy 2011
was a fantastic success with
10 countries being repre-
sented by a total of 35 dele-
gates. The three day event
was held in Amsterdam
between 30th May and 1st
June 2011.
Austria, Denmark, Finland,
Germany, Ireland, Italy,
Sweden, Switzerland, The
Netherlands and the United
Kingdom all sent team lead-
ers with top trainees to en-
joy three days of learning
new skills, networking and a
social events to remember.
Newly elected, UNIEP
President, Mr Stuart Seddon
said, “This has been a first
class event combining work-
shops for young painters to
understand painting tech-
nologies and meet people
from across Europe.
“We are very grateful to
AkzoNobel for their very
kind and generous sponsor-
ship. Without them, Legacy
could not have been run
and they provided a huge
amount of technical sup-
port, paint and wood care
materials as well as financial
sponsorship.”

Delegates give thumbs up to Legacy
The Legacy Project Team
asked delegates to complete
a detailed survey of what
they liked, disliked and how
the event could be im-
proved. The representatives
gave a big thumbs up to the
event with a massive 86%
approval rating overall.
Paul Marsden, Legacy Project
Director said, “This is a
great result with an over-
whelmingly endorsement of
86% approval. However, we
will still be looking at how
we could improve the event
for future years, as there is
always something that you
can improve.
“This is the first time we
have run Legacy so it has
been a steep learning curve
for everyone involved. Per-
haps next time we can look
at changing some elements
of the format for the work-
shops but given some teams
gave the event 98% ap-
proval we can be very proud
of the results.”

2. Part of Legacy‟s objectives was
to educate and open trainees‟
eyes to new skills and new
technologies. Whilst some skills
were familiar to young painters
the different skills showcased at
AkzoNobel‟s Sassenheim cen-
tre meant that everyone learnt
something new.
Technical Training Consultant,
Peter Doyle who put together
the workshops with Sassen-
heim‟s Thorsten Friedrich,
Group leader for Evaluation,
Application & Knowledge said,
“We had to find mini work-
shops that would embrace
trainees with different skill lev-
els and from many different
European countries.”
Four workshops included water
borne coatings, wood care,
effect wall coatings and spray-
ing. Peter said, “It was great to
see them learn the differences
between waterborne coatings
and solvent based applications.
For the UK, solvent based
paints are still widely used and
preferred, although the VOC
levels have been reduced. How-
ever, in Scandinavian countries
they only use water borne
paints, so it was really useful
for painters from the UK to
both familiarize themselves
with water borne paints and
talk to other painters across
Europe who prefer to use
them.”
UNIEP President, Stuart Sed-
don said, “Legacy has brought
together painters from across
Europe to better understand
each other‟s technical skills and
learn from one another.”

Legacy - a year of planning
Mr Erik Kruiderink and the
rest of the Board agreed to
proceed after a presentation on
the project. The then Vice
President, Stuart Seddon set up
a meeting with AkzoNobel to
agree the project brief and
sponsorship. In September,
Paul Marsden put together the
project team who started to
work out a programme, budget
and detailed management sys-
tem.
In November, the project team
visited Amsterdam to inspect
the different venues and over
Christmas there was an inten-
sive programme of designing,
testing and launching a micro-
site; www.uniepevents.org
which set out the nomination
process for teams in local lan-
guages.
Petra Broekhuizen-Kraal of
AkzoNobel Sassenheim
worked tirelessly to complete
all arrangements of booking the
hotel, restaurants, boat tour,
Color Experience Center and
Aesthetic Center visits.
The final weeks were spent
processing applications and
dealing with numerous queries
right up to the time when the
teams arrived at Schipol Air-
port!

UNIEP had wanted to run a
skills event some years before
but it had not been possible to
organise. In April 2010, the
UNIEP Board member Markus
Straube briefed Paul Marsden
who went away and designed a
three day event that would
include workshops, sight seeing
and leaving a „legacy‟ behind by
giving a local school a make
over.

3. As Paul Marsden explained,
“We wanted to leave behind a
permanent legacy for a worthy
cause in the community. Too
often conferences and events
are located in isolation and
perhaps fail to connect with the
real world. Painting Skills Legacy
2011 wanted to provide a
painting „make over‟ to
brighten up people‟s lives.
Petra Broekhuizen-Kraal of
AkzoNobel identified the Bata-
via School in the suburbs of
Amsterdam that provides a
special education for foreign
students arriving in The Neth-
erlands. With money always
difficult for maintenance given
the economic conditions, the
Headteacher, Janneke Worm-
houdt was thrilled that UNIEP
and AkzoNobel approached
her to professionally freshen up
the interior with
bright colours. The
award winning de-
sign of the school
building proved a
challenge to ensure
that the areas
painted were in
accordance with the
architect‟s require-
ments.
Dr Steve Snaith, EMEA Mar-
keting Director of AkzoNobel,
“The end result has given the
school a real boost and Akzo-
Nobel are delighted to have
contributed to improving the
school learning environment.”

ing touch
It was a real challenge for the
project team to co-ordinate 10
countries for an event that had
never been previously run.
Sophie Seddon said, “We knew
from the start that it was going
to be tricky at times communi-
cating with all our UNIEP As-
sociations. In the end, 10 coun-
tries applied speaking a total of
six different languages - Eng-
lish, German, Dutch, Italian,
Danish and Finnish (not to
forget Swiss-German!).
“We had to translate all the
application forms and market-
ing brochures, so that we had
correct information such as
delegates personal details and
even clothing sizes for overalls
and gloves.
“We even set up a Google
Translate tool on the website
www.uniepevents.org so that
there was at least a basic trans-
lation service for the site.
“Whilst we couldn‟t translate
every aspect of
the event I
think overall
everyone had a
great time
even if English
was not their
first language.
