Senior Capstone Autism Research Project
• Conducted yearlong research for professor Dr. Bryce Ryan studying the C58/J inbred mouse strain, a
proposed animal model that spontaneously develops autistic-like behaviors. The study expanded on
previous published work and investigates the emergence of core autistic-like symptoms in the C58/J
mouse in order to validate the mouse model for further testing of hypotheses on potential
causes/treatments for autism in humans.
• The individual project focused primarily on anxiety as an associated symptom of autism. Three
behavioral experimental assays were designed and executed. Data were analyzed, culminating in a
research paper and presentation before the University faculty & biology majors.
General Laboratory Skills
• Genetic techniques including SDS PAGE gel electrophoresis, ELISA, RT-PCR, Northern/Western blots,
mono & polyclonal antibody production, IHCS, subcellular fractionation, patterns of inheritance, gene
structure & in-vitro reconstitution of cellular processes.
• General & fluorescent microscopy, animal specimen dissection, identification of unknown compounds
through microscopy, NMR, 1
H NMR, IR, and mass spectrometry.
• Experience in performing experiments involving extractions, gas & column chromatography,
dehydrations, distillations, denaturation, fermentation, reductions, epoxidations, etc.
LEADERSHIP & COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Alpha Gamma Nu Fraternity Spring 2013-Spring 2016
President; Treasurer & Social Chair
• Facilitated open communication between chapter members, executive board, advisors &
administration. Created a $5000 budget for chapter expenditures & member dues.
• Oversaw/supervised operations of fraternity and coordinated social & philanthropic events with
various organizations within the Greek, non-Greek, & local community.
• Met weekly with chapter presidents & representatives at Greek Council, the governing body of
fraternities/sororities to promote the best interests of the Greek community and the five pillars of
academic achievement, community service, leadership, tradition, alumni relations.
• Represented the Greek community in the development of the University’s new alcohol policy.
Interfraternal Council Fall 2013-Spring 2014
Academic Chair
• Led weekly meetings with fraternity/sorority representatives to ensure the University’s academic
standards were met. Provided individualized studying/time management aids & tutors for members
who were facing academic challenges.
• Coordinated with co-chair to plan & execute a campus-wide event to promote academic excellence
sponsored by the Greek community. Created an itemized grant proposal requesting $1000 from the
University to fund/cosponsor the event, which was approved by administration.
