The best thing about Eat Local Month was the opportunity to
meet new people within our community and discover new
places to eat and enjoy locally

I have noticed myself asking the green
grocers, the butcher and the fish shop
owner where their produce comes
from. I hardly did that before.
Editor's Notes
here today to talk about Eat Local Month, what it is, was and its exciting future to take over the world!
The mission of Eat Local Month is to:
support local small businesses and farms to build stronger rural communities
grow and have the Surf Coast known as one of the regions most vibrant local food economies and
create ‘food tourism’ within the Surf Coast- we are so much more than a beach destination!
Launched this year, ELM, as it’s name suggest was a month long local food festival that celebrated the amazing array of food that our local chefs, artisan producers, craft brewers and winemakers have to offer.
A wide range of activities were offered that allowed locals and visitors alike to literally eat their way around the Surf Coast.
We had meet the locals’ nights,
Crop mobs- where wanna be farmers got to get their hands dirty and help a farmer for the day
A Mini farmers day, where children and adults got to learn about where their food comes from
Secret supper clubs that took people to surprise local food destinations (people didn’t even know where they were going for dinner until receiving a text message in the morning).
To a Local Growers’ Feast, where all the produce for the meal was donated from backyards, community gardens and local farms (over 350kg of produce was donated and 200 people from the community attended)
We also discovered we had a community passionate about local food,- but many of them did not know either what we had on our doorstep or where to find it….
We had resturants that would like to use more local produce
We had farmers and producers who had little to no budget for marketing
and so ELM was born
So Why Local food?
Because supporting the local community allows for business retention and expansion.
- When stores are kept in business, it keeps jobs in town.
- Money spent in your town in a local small business is spent again locally, often another five to seven times. Money spent at the big-box stores leaves town immediately and goes to the headquarters of said company.
-Supporting local businesses keeps your community alive. It keeps the local economy alive which helps with local events, and local community organisations, which small businesses are more apt to sponsor and support.
- Supporting local food and farming helps make our communities more sustainable – economically, socially, environmentally and culturally.
It builds community ….
and bridges between growers, artisans and restaurants and food lovers
It helps build regional identity-
and it also creates behaviour change
Essentially Eat Local Month puts local food first by making it easy to bring to the table
Our future plans- to take over the world, or at least our region.
We’re want to take marketing of local food initiatives to the next level, saving organisations and businesses many advertising dollars, by developing new products i.e events and/or branding of those local farms and food businesses so that those on the ground- the makers and growers, can focus on their product and what they do best- making and growing our amazing produce.
We are laying the foundation to increase production in the area and satisfy the demand by more and more people who want to source local.
We are also growing culinary tourism opportunities
We are passionate about making local food available for everyone….
So from little things big things can grow, and we’re pretty excited/ look forward to what this may grow into
Thank you
