AS IF AND AS THOUGH
As if and as though are conjunctions,they
are used to say what a situation seem like.
They can refer to something that we think
may be true.
AS IF / AS THOUGH
have the same meaning
STRUCTURE
Example:
• The sky looks as if/as though it is going to
rain.
STRUCTURE:

As if /as though is used
to describe how someone
or something
Looks Sounds Feels
Examples
• The house looks as if / as though nobody was living
in it
• Ann sounds as if / as though she’s got a cold.
• You look as if / as though you haven’t slept well.
• I feel a bit depressed. I don’t feel as if / as though
I’ve had a holiday
• You look as if you’ve seen a ghost.
• Is something bothering you? You look as if you
haven’t slept in days
EXAMPLES:
1. It smells as if / as though someone has been smoking in
here.
2. Tom is very late. It looks as if / as though he is not
coming.
3. It looks as if they’ve had a shock.
4. It looks as though you’ve not met before.
5. It doesn’t look as if the economy will improve anytime
soon.
6. The airplanes were so close together it looked
as if they were going to crash.

1. George speaks as if / as though he knew everything. He is
nothing but an upstart.
2. I cannot put up with your behaviour. You order about as if
/as though you were the boss, which you are not.
3. He spends money as if he owned a bank
More Examples
1. She’s behaving as if she were the Queen of England!
(She is not the Queen of England, but she is acting as if she is
very important)
2. They stared at me as if I were crazy.
(I’m not crazy, but people looked at me like I was crazy.)
3. His older brother always treats him as if he were a child.
(He is not a child, but his brother often talks to him like a child.)
4. He boarded the airplane as if he were a seasoned traveller.
5. She walks as if she were a supermodel.
6. She sings as if she were a pop star.
Note: If you want to emphasize that something is not
true, it’s possible to use were instead of was. In
American English it’s common to use were
“True “ statement (fact) Verb form after as if/as
though

She did not take a
shower with her clothes on
When she came in from the
