technology by non-profit organizations and to understand
their most important priorities, intentions and problems.

The management and maintenance of their infrastructure is by far the most
important reason for organizations to call on external service providers.

The survey shows that the organizations spend an average 4.2% of their
annual operational budget on IT expenses, excluding labor costs.

Other noteworthy figures and conclusions
• The survey shows that the bigger the organization the chance of having
a documented IT plan grows.
• Only 22% of the respondents systematically backup their most important
data. 7% do not do that at all.
• It is worrying that 12% of respondents are exposed to external attacks
because of the use of outdated software versions.
• At 1 out of 3 organizations, the board of directors is not really sensitive
to the role of technology.
• And finally, at 20% of the non-profit organizations, the staff does not
appear to be sufficiently aware of the risks of data leaks, loss of data or
aspects related to privacy.

Large organizations relatively use more mobile devices such as smartphones
and tablets. Within Large organizations there is a significantly higher
percentage use of laptops.

to support its operation.
21% of respondents do not have a formal policy on the use of technology
by staff and volunteers*. With the
new General Data Protection Regulation (AVG) this will in particular have
to lead to an agreement with every staff member and every volunteer
who has access to personal data collected and stored by the organization.

Which application (s) do you use for storing, organizing and
file sharing?
Google Drive is the most popular solution. 70% of respondents use a
single solution. For those who use more, the most common ones are
combinations OneDrive for Business with a Microsoft server, or a
combination of free personal storage with a paid solution.
Many organizations use other instruments, such as a shared network drive
(eg NAS).

44% of respondents indicate that they already have a significant part of
their IT migrated to the cloud. Dutch organizations are ahead of the
surrounding countries, including Belgium, where that group is 27%.

99% of the organizations have a website. The sites are mainly intended for
providing information, with the exception of the registration at events or
training courses.
Among the 'Other' objectives one finds mainly online donations.

How do you try to promote the findability of your website and optimize for search
engines?
Slightly less than half of the respondents follow SEO practices in designing
their website. A little more than one of five respondents actively analyze
traffic. More than a quarter of the respondents also did ad campaigns with
the use of the AdGrants offer from Google for nonprofits.

Are you doing online fundraising? How do you do online fundraising?
The respondents clearly indicate they prefer to recruit donations via
their own website rather than through a common platform.

Which social media networks do you actively use?
91% of the respondents are present on social networks. Facebook is most
used.
A similar survey by the TechSoup network in neighboring countries shows
that in Belgium 79% of the non-profits surveyed are active on social networks
and in Germany only 57%.

What are the main challenges in improving IT
within your organization?
More than half of the respondents experience a serious lack of time and resources.
And a third have difficulty in following the complexity and evolution of technology.
Fewer than one fifth of the respondents suffer from resistance to change within the
organization.

A group of 44% of the respondents state they migrated a large part of the IT
to the cloud, and an additional 10% plans to do this within 3 years.
Specialized tools to manage and segment contacts (CRM) are still little used
by the respondents.
83% of the respondents send regularly emails to their donors or supporters
to keep them informed of their activities.
The possibilities of search engine optimization techniques and special
conditions for Google AdGrants advertising campaigns are used pretty well.
The lack of financial resources, time and expertise for half of the respondents
are the most important obstacles for further exploitation of information
technology.
35. Survey - Conclusions
The non-profit community need honest and comparative information,
training and support in the choice and implementation of solutions.
Numerous non-profits wants to modernize their equipment and gain access
to more software offers and especially affordable equipment.
IT security and data protection and management of contacts, donors and
members are also important issues.
Although most organizations are already online, their main priorities are
improving their website and making better use of social networks.
There is also a hunger for information about online fundraising and
crowdfunding.
