BADMINTON
Badminton is a racquet sport played using racquets to hit a shuttlecock across a net.
Although it may be played with large teams,
the most common form of the game is
“singles” (with one player per side) and
“doubles” (with two players per side).
Players score points by striking a shuttlecock
with their racquet so that it passes over the
net and lands in their opponents’ half of the court. Each side may only strike the
shuttlecock once before it passes over the net.
Play ends once the shuttlecock has struck the floor or if a fault has been
called by the umpire, service judge, or the opposing side.
7
History
 Badminton used to be played in 17th
century in Gloucestershire in England at the
place called Badminton.
 In India it was played in Pune, Maharashtra in around 18th century.
 First badminton club was formed in bath, England in 1873.
 IN 1893 badminton association of England was formed.
 The All-England Open Badminton
Championships, the first badminton competition in the world, in 1899.
 The International Badminton Federation (IBF)
(Now known as Badminton World Federation) was established in 1934
 The badminton association of India was formed and all India championship was
organized in 1934 in Calcutta (Kolkata).
The Thomas Cup was started in world
8
Championship in 1948 and women’s equivalent Uber Cup was started in 1954.
9
MAJOR SKILLS
1. Forehand & Backhand Grips
Forehand and backhand grips are equally important for us to know, because a perfect
grip will rescue us from harmful injuries, save us from putting a lot of pressure on
your wrist and most importantly, help us to play better shots. The way of making
comfortable-cum-solid grips is fairly simple.
2. Footwork in Badminton
The footwork means to move here and there on the court in different ways. It
comprises jumping, long footstep, running and sudden shifts from one portion to the
other on a playing area.
3. Badminton Stance
We have to make a perfect stance in order to hit a shot effectively. That’s how we
should do it:
10
 We may put your non-racket leg a step forward.
 Our shoulder’s width far away from your racket leg.
4. Badminton Warm Ups
It is crucial for Badminton players to know how to warm up before going for an actual
match, because it will prepare you, in advance, to take up the real challenge.
There are some tips for warm up:
 Skipping for five minutes.
 Jumping jacks for one minute.
 Knee sticking for one minute.
5. Jumping Skills
We have taken a standing position, just leaning ahead and trying to guess if your
opponent hits the shuttlecock in front of the net.
6. Skills on the Court
11
We must stand on middle of the court by bending your knees slightly. After
taking this position, rely on the forefoot and, a little high, your heel.
12
Major Rules & Regulations
Playing Court-The Badminton court is rectangular and divided into 2 halves by a
net. The length of the court is 44 ft. The width of the court for doubles is 20ft and in
singles this width is reduced to 17 ft.
Post-There will be 2 posts with height as 1.55m above floor.
Net-Color of net should be dark and its mesh should be 15-20mm. width of net
should be 760mm.
Toss -The winner of toss decides the end of court or to serve first.
Scoring-When the server serves, the shuttlecock must pass over the short service
line on the opponents' court or it will count as a fault. There will be best of three
Games. The winner of 2 games will be winner. Each game consists of 21 points. This
applies to both doubles as well as singles.
13
Players-A singles are played with 1 player on each side and in doubles it is 2 players
on each side.
Interval-Between 1st and 2nd game there will be an interval of go seconds and
interval between 2nd and 3rd game should not exceed 5 minutes.
Let-If a lot is called; the rally is stopped and - replayed with no change to the score.
Let’s may occur because of some unexpected disturbance.
Rackets- A racket is usually made of steel, aluminum, and graphite. The ideal length
is 27 inches and weight 85 to 140 gm for rackets.
Shuttlecock- A shuttlecock is a high drag projectile, with an open conical shape: the
cone is formed from sixteen overlapping feathers embedded into a rounded
Cork base. The weight of a shuttle should be 4.73-5.5gm. The feathers should have a
length of 62-72 mm
14
Badminton terminology
1. Back Gallery-Area included between the long service line and back line.
2. Service Court -Portion of court from where service is delivered.
3. Rally-Sending shuttle over the net.
4. Server-Player who puts Shuttle in play.
5. Match Point-The point which won by server makes him Winner of match.
6. Inning-Time during which a player holds service.
7. Rotation-In doubles, players keep changing their position during the play.
15

CONCLUSION
All in all, badminton is a very interesting sport. It is a fitness game. It not just for
healthy, if we are really interested, we will learn the skills and thinking why just a
small shuttlecock will produce a huge influenced on human to play badminton. As we
knew, badminton is a quite famous game in Malaysia especially our Datuk Lee Chong
We is the first seed of single man player.
These are the basic information that I mentioned before which are the definition
of badminton, history of badminton, rules, badminton equipment, fitness training in
badminton, basic skills for badminton, and additional information of badminton. I
hope the badminton fans will love it especially for beginner.
At last, but not least, I always keep emphasizing that we have to do warm-up first
once we want to play badminton. After that, you all have to warm-down due to it can
release the muscle strength and it won’t easier to get injured in the long-term view.
