PREFACE
A COMPARAITIVE ANALYSIS OF
“IMPACT OF ACADEMIC STRESS AMONG THE MANAGEMENT
STUDENTS OF GTU.”
This study was undertaken during the project work in the period of 2017-18,
as a partial fulfillment of MBA programmed of GUJARAT TECHNOLOGICAL
UNIVERSITY. The MBA is the study of management aspect where only theoretical
knowledge is provided in the classroom is not sufficient.
MBA is the integration of the orbital as practical study. Both are just two side
of coin. Without theoretical concept practical knowledge in business is not sufficient
and in the absence of practical study, theoretical concepts are useless. Due to this
fact in the subject of project work is carried out on the comparative study:
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Survey is an excellent tool for learning and exploration. No classroom routine
can substitute which is possible while working in real situation. Application of
theoretical knowledge to practical situation is the bonanzas of the survey.
Without a proper combination of inspection and preparation, it’s not easy to
achieve anything there is always a sense of gratitude, which we express to other for
the help and needy services they render during the different phases of our lives. I
would like to do it as we really wish to express our gratitude towards all those who
have been helpful to us directly or indirectly during the development of this project.
Any accomplishment requires the efforts of many people and this work is also
a synergistic product of many minds. I take this opportunity in expressing the facts
that this project report is the result of an enormous amount of encouragement, co-
operation and moral support that we have received from others.
It is beyond our literal and material means to express thanks and deep
gratitude to our Dean Dr. Sunit Jakhoria & my project guide Prof. Hiteshwari Jadeja
and for their assiduous guidance, continuous encouragement and inspiring
suggestions during the project study. I am grateful to our friends and who provided
us the support and inspiration needed to complete this report.
EXECUTIVE SUMMERY
This study investigated the nature, causes and effects of stress on MBA
Students in GTU under colleges. The type, nature and causes of stress to students
were discovered, including its effects. The extent to which students also managed
the stress was examined, as the continuous effects of stress will definitely result to
poor performance.
In carrying out this research, some colleges under GTU. The research
methods used to generate data included the use of structured questionnaires
designed by the researcher which was administered on workers. Frequency tables
and were used as the method of analysis to ensure simplicity, accuracy and level of

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT EDUCATION INDUSTRY
Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition
of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits. Educational methods
include storytelling, discussion, teaching, training, and directed research. Education
frequently takes place under the guidance of educators, but learners may
also educate themselves. Education can
take place in formal or informal settings and
any experience that has a formative effect on
the way one thinks, feels, or acts may be
considered educational.
Education is commonly divided
formally into such stages
as preschool or kindergarten, primary school, secondary school and
then college, university, or apprenticeship.
A right to education has been recognized by some governments and
the United Nations. In most regions, education is compulsory up to a certain age.
HISTORY OF EDUCATION SECTOR
Education in India is provided by the public sector as well as the private
sector, with control and funding coming from three levels:
1) Central,
2) State &
3) Local
Under various articles of the Indian Constitution, free and compulsory education is
provided as a fundamental right to children between the ages of 6 and 14. The ratio
of public schools to private schools in India is 7:5.
The education department of the state pays special attention to the
improvement of elementary education in Gujarat. The state government has also
launched the district primary education program for making primary education
compulsory and free for all students up to a certain age limit. It has also taken up
several measures for checking the rate of dropout at schools in Gujarat. The same
uniform structure of 10+2 education is followed in the schools of Gujarat.

OVERVIEW OF WORLD MARKET
Education is a powerful driver of development and one of the strongest
instruments for reducing poverty and improving health, gender equality, peace, and
stability. Although there has been great progress in the last decade, some 260
million children are still out of primary and secondary school, and 250 million children
globally still can’t read or write, although many have been to school.
Education has large, consistent returns in terms of income and counters
widening inequality. For individuals, it promotes employment, earnings, health, and
poverty reduction. For societies, it drives long-term economic growth, spurs
innovation, strengthens institutions, and fosters social cohesion.
Mounting evidence shows that the skills acquired in school are what drive
growth and equip individuals for work and life. Without learning, education fails to
deliver fully on its promise as a central driver of poverty elimination and shared
prosperity. Schooling without learning is not just a wasted opportunity, but an
injustice to the children who need it most.
Developing countries have made tremendous progress in getting children into
the classroom and primary school access has seen unprecedented expansion. The
majority of children worldwide are now in school and the number of years of
schooling completed by the average adult in the developing world has more than
tripled in recent decades, from two years in 1950 to more than seven years in 2010.
OVERVIEW OF INDIAN MARKET
Survey covers entire Higher Education Institutions in the country.
Institutions are categorized in 3 broad Categories; University, College and
Stand-Alone Institutions.
 There are 799 Universities, 39071 colleges and 11923 Stand Alone
Institutions listed on AISHE web portal and out of them 754
Universities, 33903 Colleges and 7154 Stand Alone Institutions have
responded during the survey. 268 Universities are affiliating i.e.
having Colleges.
 277 Universities are privately managed. 307 Universities are located
in rural area.
 There are 459 General, 101 Technical, 64 Agriculture & Allied, 50
Medical, 20 Law, 11 Sanskrit and 7 Language Universities.
 The top 8 States in terms of highest number of colleges in India are
Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh,
Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh.
 60% Colleges are located in Rural Area. 11.1% Colleges are
exclusively for Women.
 Total enrolment in higher education has been estimated to be 34.6
million with 18.6 million boys and 16 million girls. Girls constitute
46.2% of the total enrolment.
 The total number of foreign students enrolled in higher education is
s45,424.
 The foreign students come from 165 different countries from across
the globe.
 Highest share of foreign students come from the neighboring
countries of which Nepal is 21% of the total, followed by, Afghanistan
(10%), Bhutan (6%). Nigeria and Sudan constitutes (5%) each.
 At Post Graduate level M.A. pass number of students is maximum
followed by M.Sc. and M.B.A
Government. Education is one of the most powerful instruments for
reducing poverty and inequality. Education is equally key to enhance India’s
competitiveness in the global economy. Therefore, ensuring access to
quality education for all, in particular for the poor and rural population, is
central to the economic and social development of India.
GROWTH OF EDUCATION
Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition
of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits. Educational methods
include storytelling, discussion, teaching, training, and directed research.
Education frequently takes place under the guidance of educators, but learners
may also educate themselves.[1] Education can take place
in formal or informal settings and any experience that has a formative effect on
the way one thinks, feels, or acts may be considered educational. The
methodology of teaching is called pedagogy.
Education is commonly divided formally into such stages
as preschool or kindergarten, primary school, secondary school and
then college, university, or apprenticeship.
A right to education has been recognized by some governments and
the United Nations. In most regions, education is compulsory up to a certain age.
STUDENTS & STRESS
We all live with stress, the tension we feel when confronted with a new or
threatening situation. College students are no different than anyone else, as they
too, experience the stresses and strains of living in today’s world. They are
constantly facing new situations where the outcome is often uncertain. They may be
living on their own for the first time and/or supporting themselves. Their sense of
self-esteem and well-being is challenged by problems and managing time.
Without really understanding why, they may become angry or anxious, sad or
frustrated. When young adults become overwhelmed by stress, they sometimes
withdraw or strike out at others. Parents often feel inadequate in responding to the
stress experienced by their children.
While there are seldom easy answers to their life’s problems, parents may
find the following suggestions helpful in dealing with college stress.
Stress is not always bad. An appropriate level of stress can effectively
motivate your student toward growth, achievement, and self-satisfaction.
Talk about it. Talking with a trusted adult helps students feel they do not carry
the burden of stress alone. Encourage your children to discuss their feelings, but
refrain from telling them how they should feel. Ask open-ended questions which
require more than a yes or no response. Remember to listen. Parents who spend
twice as much time listening as they do giving advice are more effective.
Teach problem-solving skills and constructive action. Stress is often the result
of feeling trapped and overwhelmed by the problems in our lives. Students are
sometimes immobilized by their inability to see a positive outcome for a difficult
situation. By teaching them to solve problems one step at a time, we provide them
with a useful resource to deal with stress.
Slow down. The fast pace of our complex lives is often stressful in itself.
College students living at home need privacy and quiet time, and unstructured time
when they can exercise their imagination and process the events of the day.
Set your standards high, but do not expect perfection. One of the most
important gifts to give children is a sense of positive self-esteem. Attaining goals
contributes significantly to the development of self-esteem. Having the unrealistic
expectation that your children should be perfect sets them up to experience stress,
self-doubt and failure.
Put life into perspective. College students often become obsessed with the
present moment. They may feel overwhelmed because they cannot see beyond the
immediate problem. They have difficulty identifying options and alternatives. Help
your child understand that problems have solutions. Also help them to recognize
temporary concerns and lasting values. Stress can often be reduced by reminding
them that life goes on and tomorrow can be better than today.
Seek out professional help. Sometimes the stress experienced by college
students is traumatizing and can be disruptive or dangerous. Parents do not always
have the resources within the family to deal with stress, at a time when you should
be letting go and allowing the young adult an opportunity to handle their own life.

LITERATURE REVIEW
(shah, 2016) The study examined the impact of academic stress among the
management students. Stress management encompasses techniques to equip a
person with effective coping mechanisms for dealing with psychological stress.
Students have different expectations, goals and values that they want to fulfill, which
is only possible if they are integrated with that of the institution. The objective of the
study is to find out the present level of stress, sources of stress and stress
management techniques that would be useful for management students. The study
takes into account various criteria like physical, psychological, individual,
demographical, educational and environmental factors of stress among the
management students. The sample comprises of 117 students of different B-Schools
in Mumbai. Data was collected through structured questionnaire by using convenient
sampling method.
(Shaj, 2015)Stress arises when the combination of internal and external pressures
exceeds the individual’s resources to cope with their situation. For many young
adults, college is the best time of life. These critical years can also be undermined by
depression, anxiety and stress. Students are very likely to experience some or many
stressors which may test their ability to cope: adapting to a new environment,
balancing a heavy work load, making new friends, becoming more independent, and
dealing with myriad of other issues. Looking from a closer perspective, the college
students’ encounters a number of challenges in his day to day life, therefore the
whole idea of an existing and vibrant college life is unveiled by these challenges
which in turn contribute to stress and if not dealt with can only escalate and hamper
their academic performance, emotional and social well-being. The present paper
examines the sources and effects of stress on the college students. It is hoped that
the findings of the present study will assist college students to deal with stress and
help advance knowledge on coping strategies to face life stress.
(Bhavin pandya, 2012) The objective of this study is to explore the components
of academic stress among the Masters of Business Administration students of GTU
affiliated colleges. Many researchers have identified the components of Academic
stress and different stressors which impact the students. This study further tries to
enlighten each component of academic stress such as curriculum and instruction,
team work related issues, assessment, and placement, impact on performance and
outcomes of Academic stress. Three major stressors have been identified which
affect the performance and three major outcomes of stress. Around twelve micro
issues have been identified under the curriculum and instruction component while
three stressors were prioritized related to team work; seven sub issues regarding
assessment and three micro issues under placement components of academic
stress. The sample comprises of 118 Masters of Business Administration students of
GTU affiliated colleges from all the five zones of Gujarat. Data was collected through
structured academic stress questionnaire.
(Dr.R.Rajasekar, 2013)The study examined the impact of academic stress
among the management students. Stress management encompasses techniques to
equip a person with effective coping mechanisms for dealing with psychological
stress. Students have different expectations, goals and values that they want to
fulfill, which is only possible if they are integrated with that of the institution. The
objective of the study is to find out the present level of stress, sources of stress and
stress management techniques that would be useful for management students. The
study takes into account various criteria like physical, psychological, individual,
demographical and environmental factors of stress among the management
students. The sample comprises of 100 students of AMET Business School, AMET
University in Chennai. Data was collected through structured questionnaire by using
convenient sampling method.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Introductionof Stress Management
Stress management is one of the burning issues
nowadays. All human beings are suffering from some or
the other mental or physical ailments like the blood
pressure, heart attack, depression, ulcer, low concentration
etc. Competition, availability of manpower in bulk,
increases in daily targets, globalization, diverse culture etc.
are the main reasons of stress.
The word 'stress' is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as "a state of affair
involving demand on physical or mental energy". A condition or circumstance (not
always adverse), which can disturb the normal physical and mental health of an
individual. In medical parlance 'stress' is defined as a perturbation of the body's
homeostasis. This demand on mind-body occurs when it tries to cope with incessant
changes in life. A 'stress' condition seems 'relative' in nature. Extreme stress
conditions, psychologists say, are detrimental to human health but in moderation
stress is normal and, in many cases, proves useful. Stress, nonetheless, is
synonymous with negative conditions.
Cooper (1997)summarizes stressas:
"everything that deprives the person of purpose and zest, that leaves him
with negative feelings about himself, with anxieties, tensions, a sense of lost ness,
emptiness and futility."
What is Stress????
Stress may be understood as a state of tension experienced by individuals
facing
Extraordinary demands, constraints or
opportunities.
Stress Defined as
“Stress is an adaptive response to
an external situation that results in
physical, psychological and behavioral
deviations for organizational
participants.”
“Stress is a person’s adaptive response to a stimulus that places excessive
psychological or physical demands on that person”
Common Causes of Stress in Students life
1) Academic Performance Pressure
The pressure to perform academically is one of the primary causes of teenage
stress, particularly for college students. Coursework can be very demanding and the
competition for earning top marks can be very fierce. Students who want to do their
best and who are planning to apply for admission to graduate school can be under a
great deal of pressure as they struggle to excel in school. The same is true for those
who are seeking scholarship funding or who must keep their grades up in order to
keep existing scholarship awards.

2) FinancialStress
Many college students experience financial stress. This can involve the struggle
to find sufficient money to pay for tuition, as well as securing the funds needed to
cover the costs of living while attending school. Even those students who are able to
qualify for sufficient financial aid to cover immediate college costs have to cope with
the financial stress of knowing that they will have to face paying back a large sum of
money following graduation. The debt associated with student loans can be a source
of stress, even long before finishing school and entering the job market.
3) MultitaskingStress
College students often engage in multiple activities outside of school. In addition
to taking several classes at one time, students may also be juggling jobs,
extracurricular activities, volunteer work, family responsibilities, and more. While
figuring out how to handle multiple simultaneous responsibilities can be excellent
practice for adulthood, doing so is certainly a cause of stress for many students.
4) Facing the Future
While some students have a clear vision of the lives they want to enjoy as adults,
many feel overwhelmed by the idea of trying to figure out what they want to do with
their lives. College students feel pressure to make educational and career decisions
that can impact the rest of their live. Choosing a major can be stressful, as can
making choices about where to live, which relationships to continue to pursue, and
more.
5) IncreasedResponsibility and Independence
The college years are characterized by quite a bit of change. Dealing with
change is a major stressor for most individuals. For many people, attending college
is the beginning of the process of becoming independent. Leaving home to go away
to school and start taking on additional responsibility can be very stress inducing.
Being faced with making important decisions about one's life and schedule for the
first time is something that can be very stressful for college students.
6) Peer Pressure
During the college years, peer pressure can be quite fierce. Coeds often face
pressure from their classmates to experiment with drugs, sexual activity, and other
potentially harmful behaviors. For those who choose not to participate in such
activities, resisting pressure can be a source of stress. Individuals who do venture
into behaviors that might better be avoided also experience stress, typically both
emotional and physical in nature.
7) Speak English Fluently
Improve your spoken English skills & build the confidence to succeed in your
career & life
Reduce the Stress in Students life
Get enough sleep
Eat well
Exercise
Avoid unnatural energy boosters
Get emotional support
Don’t give up your passions
Try not to overload yourself
Avoid relaxing with alcohol
Breathe
Get a massage
1. Get enough sleep
It may be tempting to hit the hay at 4 a.m. and then attend an 8 a.m. class, but
shortchanging yourself on rest can increase your stress level. “Winging it on not
much sleep has a profound effect on how we experience the stressors of the
day,”
2. Eat well
A steady diet of pizza and vending-machine fare can decrease energy levels
in the body, leading to a lower threshold for stress. “You end up feeling very tired
and looking for the same [junk food] to kick you back up,”
“It’s a lousy cycle of hunting for short-term comfort food or sugar highs that
actually keep you feeling worse.” Follow a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and
whole grains.
3. Exercise
When you’re stressed, moving around may be the last thing you feel like
doing. But as little as 20 minutes a day of physical activity can reduce stress
levels. Forbes says just three or four half-hour sessions can lighten stress
considerably.
4. Avoid unnatural energy boosters
Artificial stimulants like caffeine pills or prescription meds may help you stay
awake for that all-night study session, but putting off your body’s need to sleep
will ultimately result in an energy crash, resulting again in a greater susceptibility
to stress. “It’s like clipping the wires to your fire alarm while the house burns
down,”
5. Get emotional support
Adjusting to college can be difficult, and venting your frustrations to a trusted
friend can go a long way in fighting stress. “It’s a way to empty out tensions and
make them lower,” Choose a friend or family member who won’t be judgmental or
try to give lots of advice.
6. Don’t give up your passions
Your schedule may be filled with lectures and study groups, but try to find at least
a couple of hours each week to pursue a hobby or other activity that you enjoy. “Do
something that feeds the peace of your soul in some way and stay connected with
it,”
7. Try not to overload yourself
Between classes, extracurricular groups, and maybe even a job, it’s easy for
students to take on more than they can handle. If you’ve signed up for an excessive
number of courses, don’t be afraid to drop one, and remember that you can always
say no when you’re asked to organize the Latin Club’s annual yard sale. “Take good,
loving care of yourself,”
8. Avoid relaxing with alcohol
Having three or four beers to unwind after a hard day of studying may seem
perfectly logical, but any unresolved stress that you have will just come flooding back
after your buzz subsides. Plus, if you overindulge, you may have to deal with
unpleasant side effects, like nausea and hangovers, later on. If you find yourself
drinking regularly before noon, become anxious at the prospect of not drinking, or
become unable to “just have one,”.
9. Breathe
When you feel stressed, deep-breathing exercises can help melt away the
tension. Try this exercise: Inhale slowly through your nose, hold the breath for a few
seconds, then exhale through your mouth, and repeat as needed. This helps prevent
the short, shallow breaths that often accompany feelings of tension.
10)Get a massage
If you’re feeling frazzled, try putting yourself in someone else’s hands — literally.
Stress often causes your muscles to become tight and knotted, and a professional
massage therapist can help to loosen them, providing stress relief. Educational
requirements for massage therapists vary from state to state, so finding a
knowledgeable one can be tricky.

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
This study has been conducted with a variety of important objectives in mind.
The following provides us with the chief objectives that have tried to achieve through
the study. The extent to which these objectives have been met could judge from the
conclusions & suggestions, which appear in later of this study.
The Chief Objective of This Study is
1. Primary objective
To undergo an in-depth study about the existence of stress among the students of
the MBA.
2. Secondary objective
 To identify the factors causing stress among the Students.
 To study about the effects of stress on Students.
 To analyze the ways of coping with stress.
INTRODUCTION
Research is an organized and systematic way of finding answers to
questions.
 SYSTEMATIC because there is a definite set of procedures and steps which
you will follow. There are certain things in the research process which are
always done in order to get the most accurate results
.
 ORGANISED, that there is a structure or method in going about doing
research, It is a planned procedure, not a spontaneous one. It is focused and
limited to a specific scope.
 FINDING ANSWERS is the end of all research. Whether it is the answer to a
hypothesis or even a simple question, research is successful when we find
answers. Sometimes the answer is no, but it is still an answer.
 QUESTIONS are central to research. If there is no question, then the answer
is of no use. Research is focused on relevant, useful and important questions.
Without a question, research has no focus, drive or purpose.
Research is done to gain some knowledge so as it may aid in understanding
the information gathered on specific topic. It is a scientific and systematic way of
understanding information on specific and particular subjects. It is a scientific
investigation to understand the cause and effect as well as the reasons through
investigation. It is an academic activity and it is to be used in technical sense.

CONCLUSION
Academic factors were one of the most important stressors.
Today a college education can overload students with too many stressful
situations. Not only does stress overload today’s college students, but it is also
leading cause of personality disorders.
Stress is expressed through a variety of symptoms that can be hazardous to
student’s physical and mental health. With such high expectations to do well during
college, students may become sleep deprived, which impairs mental capacity, but
sleep deprivation is only one of a vast array of symptoms.

  • 9. GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT EDUCATION INDUSTRY Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits. Educational methods include storytelling, discussion, teaching, training, and directed research. Education frequently takes place under the guidance of educators, but learners may also educate themselves. Education can take place in formal or informal settings and any experience that has a formative effect on the way one thinks, feels, or acts may be considered educational. Education is commonly divided formally into such stages as preschool or kindergarten, primary school, secondary school and then college, university, or apprenticeship. A right to education has been recognized by some governments and the United Nations. In most regions, education is compulsory up to a certain age.

  • 11. OVERVIEW OF WORLD MARKET Education is a powerful driver of development and one of the strongest instruments for reducing poverty and improving health, gender equality, peace, and stability. Although there has been great progress in the last decade, some 260 million children are still out of primary and secondary school, and 250 million children globally still can’t read or write, although many have been to school. Education has large, consistent returns in terms of income and counters widening inequality. For individuals, it promotes employment, earnings, health, and poverty reduction. For societies, it drives long-term economic growth, spurs innovation, strengthens institutions, and fosters social cohesion. Mounting evidence shows that the skills acquired in school are what drive growth and equip individuals for work and life. Without learning, education fails to deliver fully on its promise as a central driver of poverty elimination and shared prosperity. Schooling without learning is not just a wasted opportunity, but an injustice to the children who need it most. Developing countries have made tremendous progress in getting children into the classroom and primary school access has seen unprecedented expansion. The majority of children worldwide are now in school and the number of years of schooling completed by the average adult in the developing world has more than tripled in recent decades, from two years in 1950 to more than seven years in 2010.

  • 15. STUDENTS & STRESS We all live with stress, the tension we feel when confronted with a new or threatening situation. College students are no different than anyone else, as they too, experience the stresses and strains of living in today’s world. They are constantly facing new situations where the outcome is often uncertain. They may be living on their own for the first time and/or supporting themselves. Their sense of self-esteem and well-being is challenged by problems and managing time. Without really understanding why, they may become angry or anxious, sad or frustrated. When young adults become overwhelmed by stress, they sometimes withdraw or strike out at others. Parents often feel inadequate in responding to the stress experienced by their children. While there are seldom easy answers to their life’s problems, parents may find the following suggestions helpful in dealing with college stress. Stress is not always bad. An appropriate level of stress can effectively motivate your student toward growth, achievement, and self-satisfaction. Talk about it. Talking with a trusted adult helps students feel they do not carry the burden of stress alone. Encourage your children to discuss their feelings, but refrain from telling them how they should feel. Ask open-ended questions which require more than a yes or no response. Remember to listen. Parents who spend twice as much time listening as they do giving advice are more effective. Teach problem-solving skills and constructive action. Stress is often the result of feeling trapped and overwhelmed by the problems in our lives. Students are sometimes immobilized by their inability to see a positive outcome for a difficult situation. By teaching them to solve problems one step at a time, we provide them with a useful resource to deal with stress. Slow down. The fast pace of our complex lives is often stressful in itself. College students living at home need privacy and quiet time, and unstructured time when they can exercise their imagination and process the events of the day.
  • 16. Set your standards high, but do not expect perfection. One of the most important gifts to give children is a sense of positive self-esteem. Attaining goals contributes significantly to the development of self-esteem. Having the unrealistic expectation that your children should be perfect sets them up to experience stress, self-doubt and failure. Put life into perspective. College students often become obsessed with the present moment. They may feel overwhelmed because they cannot see beyond the immediate problem. They have difficulty identifying options and alternatives. Help your child understand that problems have solutions. Also help them to recognize temporary concerns and lasting values. Stress can often be reduced by reminding them that life goes on and tomorrow can be better than today. Seek out professional help. Sometimes the stress experienced by college students is traumatizing and can be disruptive or dangerous. Parents do not always have the resources within the family to deal with stress, at a time when you should be letting go and allowing the young adult an opportunity to handle their own life.

  • 29. LITERATURE REVIEW (shah, 2016) The study examined the impact of academic stress among the management students. Stress management encompasses techniques to equip a person with effective coping mechanisms for dealing with psychological stress. Students have different expectations, goals and values that they want to fulfill, which is only possible if they are integrated with that of the institution. The objective of the study is to find out the present level of stress, sources of stress and stress management techniques that would be useful for management students. The study takes into account various criteria like physical, psychological, individual, demographical, educational and environmental factors of stress among the management students. The sample comprises of 117 students of different B-Schools in Mumbai. Data was collected through structured questionnaire by using convenient sampling method. (Shaj, 2015)Stress arises when the combination of internal and external pressures exceeds the individual’s resources to cope with their situation. For many young adults, college is the best time of life. These critical years can also be undermined by depression, anxiety and stress. Students are very likely to experience some or many stressors which may test their ability to cope: adapting to a new environment, balancing a heavy work load, making new friends, becoming more independent, and dealing with myriad of other issues. Looking from a closer perspective, the college students’ encounters a number of challenges in his day to day life, therefore the whole idea of an existing and vibrant college life is unveiled by these challenges which in turn contribute to stress and if not dealt with can only escalate and hamper their academic performance, emotional and social well-being. The present paper examines the sources and effects of stress on the college students. It is hoped that the findings of the present study will assist college students to deal with stress and help advance knowledge on coping strategies to face life stress.

  • 31. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Introductionof Stress Management Stress management is one of the burning issues nowadays. All human beings are suffering from some or the other mental or physical ailments like the blood pressure, heart attack, depression, ulcer, low concentration etc. Competition, availability of manpower in bulk, increases in daily targets, globalization, diverse culture etc. are the main reasons of stress. The word 'stress' is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as "a state of affair involving demand on physical or mental energy". A condition or circumstance (not always adverse), which can disturb the normal physical and mental health of an individual. In medical parlance 'stress' is defined as a perturbation of the body's homeostasis. This demand on mind-body occurs when it tries to cope with incessant changes in life. A 'stress' condition seems 'relative' in nature. Extreme stress conditions, psychologists say, are detrimental to human health but in moderation stress is normal and, in many cases, proves useful. Stress, nonetheless, is synonymous with negative conditions. Cooper (1997)summarizes stressas: "everything that deprives the person of purpose and zest, that leaves him with negative feelings about himself, with anxieties, tensions, a sense of lost ness, emptiness and futility."
  • 32. What is Stress???? Stress may be understood as a state of tension experienced by individuals facing Extraordinary demands, constraints or opportunities. Stress Defined as “Stress is an adaptive response to an external situation that results in physical, psychological and behavioral deviations for organizational participants.” “Stress is a person’s adaptive response to a stimulus that places excessive psychological or physical demands on that person”
  • 33. Common Causes of Stress in Students life 1) Academic Performance Pressure The pressure to perform academically is one of the primary causes of teenage stress, particularly for college students. Coursework can be very demanding and the competition for earning top marks can be very fierce. Students who want to do their best and who are planning to apply for admission to graduate school can be under a great deal of pressure as they struggle to excel in school. The same is true for those who are seeking scholarship funding or who must keep their grades up in order to keep existing scholarship awards. • 34. 2) FinancialStress Many college students experience financial stress. This can involve the struggle to find sufficient money to pay for tuition, as well as securing the funds needed to cover the costs of living while attending school. Even those students who are able to qualify for sufficient financial aid to cover immediate college costs have to cope with the financial stress of knowing that they will have to face paying back a large sum of money following graduation. The debt associated with student loans can be a source of stress, even long before finishing school and entering the job market. 3) MultitaskingStress College students often engage in multiple activities outside of school. In addition to taking several classes at one time, students may also be juggling jobs, extracurricular activities, volunteer work, family responsibilities, and more. While figuring out how to handle multiple simultaneous responsibilities can be excellent practice for adulthood, doing so is certainly a cause of stress for many students. 4) Facing the Future While some students have a clear vision of the lives they want to enjoy as adults, many feel overwhelmed by the idea of trying to figure out what they want to do with their lives. College students feel pressure to make educational and career decisions that can impact the rest of their live. Choosing a major can be stressful, as can making choices about where to live, which relationships to continue to pursue, and more. 5) IncreasedResponsibility and Independence The college years are characterized by quite a bit of change. Dealing with change is a major stressor for most individuals. For many people, attending college is the beginning of the process of becoming independent. Leaving home to go away to school and start taking on additional responsibility can be very stress inducing. Being faced with making important decisions about one's life and schedule for the first time is something that can be very stressful for college students.
  • 35. 6) Peer Pressure During the college years, peer pressure can be quite fierce. Coeds often face pressure from their classmates to experiment with drugs, sexual activity, and other potentially harmful behaviors. For those who choose not to participate in such activities, resisting pressure can be a source of stress. Individuals who do venture into behaviors that might better be avoided also experience stress, typically both emotional and physical in nature. 7) Speak English Fluently Improve your spoken English skills & build the confidence to succeed in your career & life
  • 36. Reduce the Stress in Students life Get enough sleep Eat well Exercise Avoid unnatural energy boosters Get emotional support Don’t give up your passions Try not to overload yourself Avoid relaxing with alcohol Breathe Get a massage
  • 37. 1. Get enough sleep It may be tempting to hit the hay at 4 a.m. and then attend an 8 a.m. class, but shortchanging yourself on rest can increase your stress level. “Winging it on not much sleep has a profound effect on how we experience the stressors of the day,” 2. Eat well A steady diet of pizza and vending-machine fare can decrease energy levels in the body, leading to a lower threshold for stress. “You end up feeling very tired and looking for the same [junk food] to kick you back up,” “It’s a lousy cycle of hunting for short-term comfort food or sugar highs that actually keep you feeling worse.” Follow a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. 3. Exercise When you’re stressed, moving around may be the last thing you feel like doing. But as little as 20 minutes a day of physical activity can reduce stress levels. Forbes says just three or four half-hour sessions can lighten stress considerably. 4. Avoid unnatural energy boosters Artificial stimulants like caffeine pills or prescription meds may help you stay awake for that all-night study session, but putting off your body’s need to sleep will ultimately result in an energy crash, resulting again in a greater susceptibility to stress. “It’s like clipping the wires to your fire alarm while the house burns down,” 5. Get emotional support Adjusting to college can be difficult, and venting your frustrations to a trusted friend can go a long way in fighting stress. “It’s a way to empty out tensions and
  • 38. make them lower,” Choose a friend or family member who won’t be judgmental or try to give lots of advice. 6. Don’t give up your passions Your schedule may be filled with lectures and study groups, but try to find at least a couple of hours each week to pursue a hobby or other activity that you enjoy. “Do something that feeds the peace of your soul in some way and stay connected with it,” 7. Try not to overload yourself Between classes, extracurricular groups, and maybe even a job, it’s easy for students to take on more than they can handle. If you’ve signed up for an excessive number of courses, don’t be afraid to drop one, and remember that you can always say no when you’re asked to organize the Latin Club’s annual yard sale. “Take good, loving care of yourself,” 8. Avoid relaxing with alcohol Having three or four beers to unwind after a hard day of studying may seem perfectly logical, but any unresolved stress that you have will just come flooding back after your buzz subsides. Plus, if you overindulge, you may have to deal with unpleasant side effects, like nausea and hangovers, later on. If you find yourself drinking regularly before noon, become anxious at the prospect of not drinking, or become unable to “just have one,”. 9. Breathe When you feel stressed, deep-breathing exercises can help melt away the tension. Try this exercise: Inhale slowly through your nose, hold the breath for a few seconds, then exhale through your mouth, and repeat as needed. This helps prevent the short, shallow breaths that often accompany feelings of tension.
  • 39. 10)Get a massage If you’re feeling frazzled, try putting yourself in someone else’s hands — literally. Stress often causes your muscles to become tight and knotted, and a professional massage therapist can help to loosen them, providing stress relief. Educational requirements for massage therapists vary from state to state, so finding a knowledgeable one can be tricky.

  • 43. INTRODUCTION Research is an organized and systematic way of finding answers to questions.  SYSTEMATIC because there is a definite set of procedures and steps which you will follow. There are certain things in the research process which are always done in order to get the most accurate results .  ORGANISED, that there is a structure or method in going about doing research, It is a planned procedure, not a spontaneous one. It is focused and limited to a specific scope.  FINDING ANSWERS is the end of all research. Whether it is the answer to a hypothesis or even a simple question, research is successful when we find answers. Sometimes the answer is no, but it is still an answer.  QUESTIONS are central to research. If there is no question, then the answer is of no use. Research is focused on relevant, useful and important questions. Without a question, research has no focus, drive or purpose. Research is done to gain some knowledge so as it may aid in understanding the information gathered on specific topic. It is a scientific and systematic way of understanding information on specific and particular subjects. It is a scientific investigation to understand the cause and effect as well as the reasons through investigation. It is an academic activity and it is to be used in technical sense.

Not only does stress overload today’s college students, but it is also leading cause of personality disorders. Stress is expressed through a variety of symptoms that can be hazardous to student’s physical and mental health. With such high expectations to do well during college, students may become sleep deprived, which impairs mental capacity, but sleep deprivation is only one of a vast array of symptoms.
