On a typical day, security guards need to do a lot more that guard duty – and that includes several peripheral (but important) tasks such as report writing and other documentation.
Sometimes it also includes responding to emergencies and other unforeseen circumstances.
So when you’re planning roles and responsibilities, it is useful to study individual skills and strengths, instead of broadly distributing work to teams.

includes several peripheral (but important) tasks such as report writing and other
documentation. Sometimes it also includes responding to emergencies and other
unforeseencircumstances.
So when you're planning roles and responsibilities, it is useful to study
individual skills and strengths, instead of broadly distributing work to teams.
HERE'S WHAT WE MEAN
Guard is good at interpersonal skills - Place him at the front office, which is visitor
interfacing.
Guard is good at written documentation - Let him take over reports, security
logs,inward/outward registers.
Guard is tall, strong and muscular - Place him in vulnerable areas where a strong
securitypresenceisrequired.
Guard is good at technical skills -Train him for front office computer applications,
accesscontrolsystems,securitygadgethandling.
Guard is level-headed during pressure situations - Train him to take the lead in
firefightingoperationsandotheremergencies.
These are just a few examples of how you can match individual strengths and capability
with the nature of the task that comes up as a routine responsibility. This exercise also
tells your employee (guard) that you recognize his unique skill sets and are giving him a
responsibleroleortaskinthatspecificarea.
At the end of the day you're bound to achieve a synergy that works in leveraging the
strengthsofyourtalentpool.Andthatisguaranteedtoaddup.
WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
After you're done with assigning roles according to individual skills, it is useful to
observe people in their assigned roles on a regular basis. You will soon find that some
people will be good at proactive leadership roles, and some will be good at following
guidelines and instructions. That's the time to separate the men from the boys – pick
potential team leads who show promise and groom them to take on leadership roles.

According to me, it is always good to identify and groom your leaders from the inside –

THE IMPORTANCE OF TEAM BUILDING AS AN INBUILT PROCESS
Team building is an ongoing exercise and we should all focus on deliberate and
consistent ways to ensure that this is a continuous process. That's how you show your
commitment to your people. That's how you stay in touch with their individual growth
stories.
Any management that does not stay close to individual / team performance stays distant
fromteamdynamicsandworkforceefficiencies.
At the end of the day we must all remember that our product (our stock in trade) is
“people”. It's people who can add to our bottom line, or end up being a drain on our
resources.
If our people grow, the company grows – and the client ultimately stands to benefit.

P.S. - While we suggest that you assign roles according to personal strengths,
please ensure that you have other support staff familiar with these tasks - just in
case the key person goes on leave. Planning for back-up support is always useful.

LINKEDIN PROFILE
I’ve been in the vertical of security and investigation for a long, long time.
My entire working life has revolved around it in some way or the other.
As I moved up the ladder and changed jobs in this space I was exposed to
security aspects from different viewpoints. Security at an operational level is
different from security at a planning or policy making level. Security within a
public sector company in India is different from security at a private sector
company. Security from an employee viewpoint is different from that of
managementandstaffingconsiderations.
For a truly well-rounded professional it is important (and vital) to be familiar and
conversant with these groups and sub-groups. And that is where my strength
lies, and what truly helps me run a very successful security service company in
Bangalore, India. My deep understanding also helps me identify with the
concerns and needs of my employees and clients - in an industry where people
areyourmostimportantresource.
According to me, the right people for the job don’t walk in through the door -
they have to be oriented, trained, up-skilled, and sensitized to the needs of
moderndayworkenvironments.AndthatiswhatPrivateEyeisallabout.

ON EXPERIENCE
Our experience in specialized vertical markets gives us deep insights to the ways
we can meet customer needs and align with the needs of individual teams,
departments and client locations. Our key differential is in the quality and caliber
of the people we bring to our work teams – in terms of the right background,
industry exposure and skill sets. It’s a competitive edge that we bring to each
serviceverticalinourclientportfolio.
ON CLIENT ENGAGEMENT
Since the delivery of service happens at client locations, we need to have a
system, process and interface logic to make sure things work according to
design and plan - 24/7 extended to 365.And that’s something we have evolved
and fine tuned over the years to know the pulse of our operations at every client
location.
ON RELIABILITY
Reliability according to us is perhaps the biggest qualifier for a security agency -
and should reflect in every security transaction that happens in a working day, or
shift. Reliability is the key differential between a security agency that stays on
course,andtheonesthatgetleftbehind.
At Private Eye we take reliability very seriously - it’s a factor that is translated
into every aspect of the security function, and across different layers of security
presence and day-to-day throughput in terms of activities. And that is what we
bringtothetable.
