4. Different
traditions tell
stories of how the
first human beings
came into life. We
will examine the
one told in the
Bible.
• In Gen. 2:7, we read that God
made man out of dust of the
earth.
• “The Lord God formed man of
dust from the ground and
breathed into his nostrils the
breath of life; and man became a
living thing.”
• We have to admit that we
always thought Adam and Eve
were created already as adults.
• Our understanding has been
shaped by the theory of
instantaneous creation, since
there is a belief that“nothing is
impossible to God”.
Holy
Bible
4
5. Is the Theory of Instantaneous
Creation credible?
• Is that what third-
millennial human
beings should
believe?
• Can we today
accept the believe
that Adam and Eve
were created adult
individuals
instantaneously?
5
6. Instantaneous Creation or Evolution?
To understand whether the first human
beings were created instantaneously or not,
we first have to examine how the human
body came into being.
6
7. Primordial Form of Life
Through the process of dividing and unifying,
each organism evolved into a new stage of
complexity, then going again through the
process of splitting and unifying, reaching a
new stage of complexity.
7
8. Where there is growth
there is life, where
there is life there is a
spirit, and where there
is a spirit there is
freedom, but to a
degree in accordance
with the peculiar form
of life and life’s
evolving stage.
8
9. The human being:
the most complex living being of all.
Thanks to the
scientific study of
the human body,
we have come to
know that the
physical body,
with its very
organized internal
organs, is highly
complex.
9
10. The human being:
the most complex living being of all.
• Each organ is connected
to the whole although
individually, each has its
autonomy with a
particular function. The
human body is alive;
therefore, as a living
entity, each organ inside
the body need a period
of growth and formation
in order to achieve its
potential and be a
valuable component of
the whole, functioning
as designed. 10
11. The human being:
the most complex living being of all.
• The Heart pumps
blood, carrying
nutrients to the entire
body. The conscious
mind doesn’t need to
constantly remind the
heart to complete its
responsibility. The
heart, as all other
organs, must have
reached that stage of
“individuality” as a
responsible entity in
order to independently
be able to express its
functions for which it
was designed.
11
12. • All the creation, including
the human body, needs
time to evolve and God
was the driving force
behind each stage of the
journey. Each human
body is permeated with
the principle of freedom,
where each cell, organ,
and part of the body,
small or large, functions
freely, finding its
realization by being part
of the whole.
• We must conclude that
God could not have
created Adam and Eve
already grown-up.
12
13. Accountability
Believing that Adam and Eve were created as
adults doesn’t go along with the notion of
human responsibility. If you want to make a
person responsible for his or her action, you
have to give that person time to acquire the
appropriate spiritual and intellectual formation
before assigning responsibilities and making
that person accountable for his/her actions.
I believe God is a fair and caring God.
13
14. Back to the first human beings.
• In Genesis 2:7 we read that God breathed into
man’s nostrils the breath of life. Doesn’t this
happen when we come out of the birth canal,
taking our first breath?
14
15. Adam and Eve must have had physical parents.
Physically, they must have not looked different from
their parents. However, they were different from the
previous generation, having received the seed for a
more complex (divine) spirituality, “Then the Lord God
formed man out of dust from the ground, and breathed
into his nostrils the breath of life”.
15
16. Therefore, the breath of life breathed into the
nostrils does not refer to the physical life but
to the spiritual component which the Creator
has input into the new generation of that
particular species of living being. The God
within was not part of the internal reality of
the previous generation before Adam and Eve.
Therefore the starting point of Humanity
made of spirit and body was exactly due to
the injection of that unique spiritual
component, the seed of God’s children , “the
breath a life” which started Humanity.
16
17. God told them to not eat the fruit. We may think that
obedience is what God values most, but is it? This
concept goes along with past human political
experiences when the world was ruled by dictators
who demanded obedience, which we project on
God.
In
God’s eyes spiritual formation and understanding are
far more valuable than blind obedience. God wanted
to give the right spiritual formation to His children.
Because Adam an Eve were the first to receive the
seed of God’s spirit as children, there was no way for
them to receive spiritual guidance from other
physical beings living on earth. Then where could
they turn for the education of their consciences?
17
18. In the Catholic tradition, there is
the concept that free will is the
capacity to act with moral
responsibility, and men and
women have to acquire such
capacity. In Catholic doctrine,
this process is called the
“education and formation of
conscience.” And it needs time.
18
19. Seen it either from the physical or the spiritual
point of view, we have to conclude that God
couldn’t have made the first human ancestors
already fully grown up. Mind and body have to
go through the phases of development.
Everything needs time to find its potential,
“becoming” and fulfilling the purpose for which
they have been created by the Creator.
Therefore, the theory of evolution guided by God
can no longer be considered a mere possibility
by Christians, but rather as a fact based on
scientific arguments. It is consistent with what is
accepted in the scientific community.
