fuels as primary source of energy. Energy is an integral part of our lives, thus spending it efficiently is essential for
the future. Many energy efficiency initiatives have been undertaken worldwide, yet there are still many concerns
related to this issue.
The attempt to reduce the consumption of energy coming from scarce and hazardous resources has grown
worldwide. Governments play a significant role in developing policies which aim at reducing the energy consumption
without impairing economic growth. Even though the use of renewable resources is encouraged, according to
International Energy Agency market report of 2014, in 2013, only 22 % of the energy consumed worldwide was
renewable. These government initiatives aim at mitigating climate change and increasing expenses related to
energy that lead to environmental, social, and economic issues.
The industrial sector is one of the largest energy users. According to US Energy Information Administration, 51.7%
of the world energy was consumed for industrial uses in 2012, 26.6% for transportation, 13.9% for residential needs
and 7.8% for the commercial sector. Energy plays a crucial role for the operation of many organizations but it can also
represent a financial burden. For many organizations energy represents one of the highest operational cost, which
leads many organizations to seek energy saving strategies. The energy consumption varies between organizations
as it depends on the company’s activities. Since energy costs are often hard to handle and organizations cannot
control government decisions on the prices and policies related to energy, the best option is to try and reduce the
energy costs in order to improve the bottom line.
The demand for energy has increased worldwide, as did the price along with it. Reducing energy costs does not
only benefit organizations but it can also have a social and environmental impact. International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) has published ISO 50001 (Energy Management System – EnMS) which aims at improving
the energy performance of all types of organizations while cutting the energy costs. Some of the benefits of
implementing ISO 50001 include:
• Reduction of energy consumption and carbon emissions in a systematic way
• Management of energy assets
• Management of energy resources
• Implementation of new energy efficiency technologies
• Improvement of decision making
• Raises the awareness of employees on energy matters
• Compliance with legal and regulatory requirements
• Provides an energy efficiency framework throughout the supply chain
• Permits integration with other management systems such as environmental, quality, and health and safety.

advancements have not only affected the economic and social development, but also the energy consumption
worldwide as most of the technologies run on electricity. The economic growth, increase in population, and
technological innovations will continue to grow the demand for energy.
Implementing standards such as ISO 50001 is crucial for organizations that want to improve their energy
performance. The organizations implementing energy management systems will remain competitive due to the
reduction in their costs. Growing energy demand will make energy management crucial for a sustainable business,
and as such the need for qualified personnel on implementation and audit of ISO 50001 will keep increasing.
