Team leaders belong to more than one team:
the team they lead
the team in which they are a member.
Team leaders seek support and encouragement
from their own team leader – their manager.

- 4. Types of reports
The team leader will report regularly to management about:
team plan and objectives
team collaboration
status of deliverables/objectives
team or project issues
solutions or strategies implemented to resolve problems
risks
resources or support required to achieve objectives
budget – actual versus forecast/projected budget.

- 5. Liaising with management
Liaising with management can be conducted in a variety
of forms, such as:
weekly teleconference or videoconference, if team
members are remote
meeting minutes
written reports
presentations, with slides, spreadsheets, or handouts
one-on-one: team leader and manager.

Some reporting skills examples are:
report writing:
provide a summary in bullet points
limit content in a presentation to the key facts.
presentation skills
spreadsheet skills
ability to set up a data projector and show a
presentation
facilitation skills.

management to team

Giving feedback
1. Be clear about what you want to say.
2. Emphasise the positive.
3. Focus on behaviour rather than the person.
4. Refer to behaviour that can be changed.
5. Be descriptive rather than evaluative.
6. Own the feedback – Use ‘I’ statements.
7. Be specific – Don’t generalise.
8. Be very careful with advice.

Team leaders need presentation and reporting skills to
communicate to management.
Reasons why team leaders liaise with management:
to discuss team issues and problems
to discuss team progress
to seek support and advice.
Not all feedback from management will be positive. The
team leader needs will need to prepare the impact of the
message on the team.
Team leaders need to develop feedback skills that are
specific, and focus on behaviour, not the person.
