Module2: Evaluative

2. What am I doing, why am I doing it?
How others did it?
Why I like them?
Why I don’t like them?
How can we evaluate success?
How can we extract what we need from a project?
3. A new methodology to analyze projects
Building a framework to analyze
4. How does it help me?
- To break projects into parts that form them.
- To see the relationships of the components.
- To realize what works, what not.
5. How does it help me?
- To break projects into parts that form them.
- To see the relationships of the components.
- To realize what works, what not.
Most importantly, to see why they are important to me.
6.
7. How do we assess the success of a project?
# of users vs. # of unique participation
Achievements against aims and objectives
Public vs. private consequences
Benefit vs. Cost
Learning (Long time vs. Short time)

12. 5 factors of adopting innovation (Everett Rogers)
- Complexity
- Compatibility
- Trialability
- Observability
- Relative Advantage

13. How does both help with prototypes?
- To set my goals
- To decide on the mechanism and tasks.
- To evaluate the meaning of each element.
- To tweak the parameters for different results.
- To make things more clear and visible (to me).
14. Let’s talk about prototypes

19. 1. Cost: Time and energy.
Why would I bother to pick up the post it, find a pen, think, draw, pin
2. Complexity: Moderate.
3.
Triability: Low
If I do it once, I know I won’t do it again.
4. Observability: Low
The chances are low that I see someone doing it, maybe I don’t even
know what going on there, it’s not that visible as well.
5.
Relative advantage: NA
What did I get out of it? Did it make any change in my life?
20. What was missing?
1. Focused interest group + specific goal.
2. Clear directions.
3. Strong incentive.
4. Engaging mechanism.
5. Visibility, visual attraction.
21. Does it make sense to investigate this without a
context?
22. Does it make sense to investigate this without a
context?
Without a defined target group (people with similar interests)
23. Does it make sense to investigate this without a
context?
Without a defined target group (people with similar interests)
Without a specific goal.
24. Does it make sense to investigate this without a
context?
Without a defined target group (people with similar interests)
Without a specific goal.
Without a clear direction.
25. Does it make sense to investigate this without a
context?
Without a defined target group (people with similar interests)
Without a specific goal.
Without a clear direction.
YES NO!
26. What is the commonality, what’s my interest?
1. Going out in the field.
2. Spotting something important to me/to others that involve in
this action.
3. Documenting what I’ve found.
4. Sharing it with the rest of the world, seeing it in a public
platform/knowing it will do some good.
5. The relief of pride/ownership.
27. But WHY?
1. Be aware of the environment you are living in, be sensitive
about it.
2. Take responsibility and ownership, contribute to improvement
of the society you are living in.
3. Empower citizens to better advocate for their own community
needs.
28. In the meantime…
1. I interviewed 2 of the project owners (Yasser Ansari, Joe Saavedra)
2. I had this huge conversation / interview with the lady who admins
the Flickr group Leaves but Not Trees.
3. I set up interviews with Esra Ozkan (Visiting Scholar from MIT),
Dave Carrol, Nathan Becker (Project T2P) and Amy Minter (Special
Projects Coordinator in The New School).
