Moving from Education into Employment with Unilever Apprentices
1. OBJECTIVE
Unilever’s enineering apprentices embark upon a four year development journey,
beginning with an induction programme from The Outward Bound Trust. The programme
aims to support the transition from school and home life into the professional world of
work through:
- Developing the confidence and social skills to engage in future learning opportunities
- Being proactive in pursuing personal development - identifying skills gaps and setting
individual objectives for improvement
- Understanding what constitutes effective behaviours and developing core skills to
integrate in the Unilever workplace.
SOLUTION
An 11-day programme, guided by Unilever’s competency framework, consisting of:
- A self-led two night expedition to develop leadership skills and group management
strategies that are appropriate to the wilderness environment and the team
- A series of projects that require the group to manage their own finances, time and
human resources
- Tasks to illustrate the importance of two-way communication within an organisation
and the role that apprentices play in this process
- Experiences of mutual challenge and support to build awareness of personal impact on
others.
RESULTS
100% of Unilever apprentices have now developed plans for their continued development.
100% feel they have developed the flexibility to adapt to different job and team roles.
100% have developed their communication skills and the ability to achieve rapport with a
wide range of people.
