The document summarizes the research Oscar Gibb conducted on existing fighting games to inform the development of their own game. They analyzed UFC 3, finding it to be a realistic MMA simulation. They also looked at Real Boxing for its diverse arena selection. Street Fighter 2 provided insight into a side-view 2D style. Punch-Out was praised for its arcade/pixelated graphics combined with realism. Common features across games included the fighting theme, while aspects to include are a detailed pixelated MMA/boxing game combining elements of UFC 3 and Punch-Out.
2. Existing Product
I chose UFC 3 as its a sport based game with a side view of the
character you may have chosen and their opponent as it’s a third
person view of the fight as it’s a sport fight based game where it is
made to be a close to real game. You can tell it’s a close to reality
game as the lighting in the scenes are only focused on the
commentators table and a spotlight on the cage whereas the fans
and viewers which you can see in the background are in a much
darker setting, this helps the players focus on the cage and the
fighting. The camera moves like you are watching an actual fight
with a sway from side to side then different cameras in each side to
focus on the nearer ends to the rounds and end to the entire fight.
The majority of noise you can hear is the fans cheering and
muttering throughout the fight with sound effect when a fighter
connects a big hit this also links back to how it would sound when
being in the stands at a real UFC fight.
3. Existing Product
The reason I chose this game is that it is in a similar style to UFC 3
although it provides a different style as it has a lot more choice
for it backgrounds as it still has the regular sounds of the fans
cheering when in the background but as you can see in the image
it allows the user to choose an arena like Madison square garden
etc. This allows the game to have more audience appeal as it
allows the users to choose the venues where they may fight in
outside arenas and in famous venues around the world this helps
audience appeal as not many other boxing games are as realistic
as this and allow the audience to have more control over the
venues. The costumes are designed to allow the user to have
main control over what they wear as the costumes still maintain
realistic boundaries
4. Existing Product
I chose street fighter 2 as it gives me an understanding of a
different style of a fighting game but from the side angle but in a
more 2D experience which is more what mine may come out as,
although it is in a different style when moving as I want to make
mine sway more when moving as if the audience are viewing
through a cameras view although it will be a pixel art styled game
although the camera movements don’t feel as realistic as a game
like UFC 3.the game doesn't showcase a storyline which may allow
it to become stale and boring to a regular user as it will end up
being too repetitive, the sound effects are quite delayed and not
creative enough as it sounds all very similar as when a punch
lands on another fighter it sounds too similar to when a fighter
flies back to the ground and for a repetitive game it doesn't have
enough features like different moves as I will take this into
consideration and make more moves for my game although the
animation itself may not be as long as normal
5. Existing Product
I chose punch-out as it was acclaimed by Nintendo as one of its best
games ever in 2008 due to its diversity being an arcade/pixelated
styled game combined with realism this game I researched due to it
being a very similar game to the one I had in mind as the pixilation
gives I the looks and movements that mine will most likely have as
the character movements in the game aren't to eccentric and lack
imagination as they only move side to side and back to front. From
this research I understand that my game will have a lot of similar
features to punch-out as the characters design are very similar to
what I had in mind although I hopefully will create the animation to
give the character more movement and also the sound effects fro
the game are fairly poor (it’s a very old game) and i hopefully will
have the ability to generate better sound effects and add more
sound effects e.g. different sounds for a punch and a kick.
6. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched
products have? All 4 products I have chosen are very similar due to
theme being MMA/Boxing as I already had that idea in my mind so I decided to
understand the other themed games around and even the one pixilated game
(punch-out) .
• What aspects of the research will you include
within your on work? My game will be very similar to all the 4
games I have chosen to do research on as mine will hopefully be a more detailed
but still pixelated MMA or Boxing game as it will be a combination of UFC 3 and
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out.
