ONE OF A KIND CHILD CARE OF STATEN ISLAND DEPLORES LACK OF RECESS TIME FOR KIDS
1. ONE OF A KIND CHILD CARE OF STATEN
ISLAND DEPLORES LACK OF RECESS TIME FOR
KIDS
Johanna Contreras, owner and program director of one of a Kind Child Care
located near the south shore railway terminal of Staten Island, New York, are
aware of the trend to reduce free play time in kindergarten facilities. A survey in
1989 showed 96% of schools surveyed had at least one recess break on their
schedule. A decade later, only 70% of surveyed kindergarten schedules had a
scheduled recess. The 2001 No Child Left behind Act prompted school districts to
reduce recess, creative arts and physical education time in favor of study in
reading and math. This sort of emphasis on academics can have detrimental
effects on a child’s cognitive breadth. A child’s cognitive capacity is assisted by
significant changes in activity throughout their day. The need for physical release
may not even be met by structured physical education classes.
