Adventure
Life before being in the maze is all
taken away so he doesn't
remember where he came from.
He is put into a maze and wakes
up not remembering how or why
he is there.
Talks to the other kids there and
decides they need to get out putting
himself forward as a ‘runner’ role that
helps them a lot.
They escape the maze and realise that
the people watching them had been
killed.
They are found by a government
source that reveals the world is dying
and they will keep them safe .
Maze Runner
Character type How they appear in your story
The Hero The hero in the maze runner is the main character ‘Thomas’ with is driving ambition to get
out the maze and he succeeded.
The Villain In this film there are several people you could class as the villain starting with people
within the group being the kids that turned on them at the end however I think the main
villain is the people controlling the maze.
The Helper They all showed characteristics as this cast member as they all had to work together and
there was not one working more and being more united than each other.
The Donor In this film there was no donor as the film is carried on in several other films and they
were welcomed by the people that are the villains.
The Dispatcher Again this film doesn't really have one as Thomas is very self motivated to get out and he
is doing it for himself and the others.
The Princess or prize This prize in this case was their freedom after getting out the maze however after they got
out they never really got freedom.
The Princess’s Father In this film we could see the people that are controlling them to be this person as they put
them there for a reason however this film doesn’t have a physical representation of this.
The False Hero I this film it would be the character ‘Gally’ as right at the end he turns on the group when
they don’t listen to him and kills one of them.
WWWWWH
Who A group of teens all male other than one.
What They are trapped in the middle of a massive maze with no memory of how or why they are there or
got there.
Why We never find out as this they made 2 more films after this one so it is explained further down the
line.
When This film is set in the future with a completely different society to the one we have at this current
time.
Where This is again just a location of setting for where the films meant to take place. However very few
adventure films actually get filmed in these places.
How They first plan to escape and achieve this at the end of the film they are expecting freedom when
they escape however are met straight with capture by the same people that put them in the maze.
Initial Ideas
The Mask Adventure/ horror
Who A group of young teenagers.
What They go looking for a killer who travels round the UK abducting teens and adults which they later kill or use
as a bribe for money.
Why The main group of kids are looking for the killer as they have taken one of the friends in this group.
When This would be set in the 1960s so there was no easy access to telephones no social media and the police
system was quite bad with working big cases like this. This also helps the horror/ adventure theme seem a
bit more realistic.
Where For this film I would have it set in the UK and have the villain in this case the killer traveling town to town.
How They do this by stealing intel from the police finding hints that the killer left behind whilst also talking to past
victims for any information they can get.
The Farm
Who Set around a group of young kids aged 13-14 years.
What There is an old rumour going round about an abandoned farm near to where the kids live. The farm is said
to have £1 million stored in the attic from the previous owner. The whole town has been looking for this
farm however no one has ever been successful.
Why There motivation for finding this money is to split it between all of them as they are all from poor family's
and it would help them live happily ever after.
When This will be set in the 60’s there will be no help from google maps they will have to adventure far and wide
to try find it. They will also have limited transport, perhaps just legs and bikes.
Where This will be set in a small town in the middle of nowhere in the UK so they will be quite distant from the rest
of the world however that doesn't stop some treasure seekers coming to try find it.
How They will do this by talking to older locals that have hints of where the farm and money could be. They will
also do a lot of research and travel as far as they can to find it.
Making It
Who A child born into a family of crime and violence.
What The child grows up and decides he wants to change life of crime and ends up being a rich investor with nice
cars and big houses.
Why He doesn't want to be a criminal anymore and is very money motivated so he wants to start investing in big
stocks to get him get money and out of his home streets.
When Present day or maybe 1990s so it could have an old gangster vibe to make it feel more realistic.
Where London. The main character will grow up on the out skirts of London and end up in a big house in London
centre.
How He will do this through a lot of research and hustling to be the best and to get to the top.

Adventure
Looking for a farm
Meant to be rural however
is full of a highly armed
gang.
Mood board: The Farm
This is my mood board for ”The Farm” idea. I have included countryside landscapes and the
types of things the characters (kids) may run into. Most of the farms will be old, rural places
with no one around. Note that these photos have a dark colour theme as this is something I
will probably implement into my own work.
Mood board: The Farm
The types of farm houses will be old, abandoned
places which provide an ideal setting for the film. I
want to have a scary element to the scenes.
The main characters will be teenagers
from the 60’s, they will be wearing clothes
similar to these. Jeans were very common
in the 60’s with tees and jackets.
The main characters will
encounter things like scary
dogs which will be used to
protect the gangs and the
farm houses.

IT – adventure/horror film
IT as a film is probably one of the best in
its genre. It is advertised as an adventure
horror and I think it does this very well.
The plot is based on a group of young kids
around 13-14 against a clown that seems
to literally be invincible. The kids are after
him as he is the one responsible for taking
the younger brother from a main
character in the group. This is their whole
motivation and the clown also knows that
leading them into traps and playing a sort
of cat and mouse game with the kids .
For a magazine cover a lot of horror films follow a
similar pattern with the bad guy always featuring
more on the advertisements. All the magazine covers
for this film has the clown on, this is to scare the
reader and makes them read it. Also with it being a
clown it scares a lot more people as there are a lot of
people with a phobia of clowns.
This film, being a horror uses a lot of the basic horror angles and soundtrack patterns
with the music being creepy and old. The music like in other films is sped up and
changes in stressful situations. The camera angles and editing style is also sped up
when the characters are faced with a difficult or scary situation. They also change when
the clown comes into shots to give a sort of stand-off vibe to the audience. This film
was also set in the 1970s meaning the editing and shots are all darker to give it old vibe.
This also helps the film look more scary and doesn't help the kids as they don’t have
Jumanji – adventure film
Jumanji is a film where a group of kids find an old gaming
console in the attic and decide to play it. After plugging it in
the kids all get sucked into the magical world of Jumanji and
the only way to get out is to complete the game. They each
have set amount of lives and different special ability's. They
go adventuring around this magical world doing tasks and
finding things to help them escape. It has a very basic theme
tune sounding something out of an old game .
This magazine, unlike the previous one has a big
picture of the main cast on instead of the villain, this is
because it wants to glorify them instead of who they
are against. They also choose to put the main cast on
the front as they are very well known actors which
helps sales for the magazine and other advertisements
as everyone wants to see their favorite actors more
than just a random cast.
The game they released is also very
popular, targeting the same younger
audience as the film did. In the
game you get to choose which
character you play and you can
choose where you go. The game
has lots of levels to complete and
the way you complete them is by
killing bad guys and collecting gems.
When you have all of the gems the
door unlocks letting you venture
into the next section of the game.
Maze Runner – adventure film.
The Maze Runner is a really
good adventure film, about a
group of older teens around
17-19. They all wake up in a
lift not remembering anything
from their past and appear to be in the center of a massive maze. The film follows the
second till last person to enter called “Thomas” and how he and the rest of the kids
escape the maze to find that the whole world had been destroyed.
The sound track for this
film as like background
music on a video game
it is pretty slow paced
and gives off pretty chill
vibes. This is strange as
it’s about kids stuck in a
maze. Also the filming
in the film is very clever
and must have used a
lot of CGI.
The magazine cover for this film in my
opinion isn’t very good as it doesn't show
anything to do with the film other than the
main character. This doesn't really draw
people in. The film title is also not very good
as it is just a normal big font which isn’t very
eye catching. Another thing I don’t really like
about this cover is there is quite a lot of
writing blocking a lot of the picture other
than the main characters face which is in
front making it stand out more.
Jurassic Park – adventure film.
Jurassic Park is a great adventure movie franchise they
have made several movies around the same basic plot
of a group of scientists and animal researchers that have
created dinosaurs on a uninhabited island. It shows
their journey from the first time they step foot on the
island to the day dinosaurs are brought back onto the
mainland. I think this is a really good film as it has a lot
of traveling and interactions with dinosaurs. The film
also has one of the most iconic theme tunes in film
history. The filming must have been very difficult for this
movie as the characters have to interact with CGI
dinosaurs. However the way they filmed and edited it
For this magazine cover I choose I think it works very well
because the picture in the middle is big and eye catching
with the main character and a massive dinosaur. The image
is also very dark making the writing stand out. Another
good thing is they put his face over the writing so you can
see his face on a white background. Something else they
did well is they are advertising their other films as well, so
fans will see a whole range instead of just one.
The game they realised for these films
is completely different to the films
themselves. The main aim on the
game is to collect as many different
dinosaurs as you can. There are no
actual levels, it’s a collecting game. It
would have been hard and taken
really good graphics to achieve a good
playable game for films like this. So
instead they made a simple collecting
game and that's all you can do on it.
Research Summary
• What have you learned from your research?
• General - there is a lot of common themes in most adventure films. Hero, Villain, likeable characters,
simple plot, satisfying ending.
• Adverts – they should have clear images and text, perhaps with well known characters that the viewer
recognises or can relate to. The font type and size should be easy to read and see to make them stand
out.
• Video Trailers – lots of action, fast pace with a cliff hanger leaving the viewer wanting to see more.
• What aspects of the research will you include within your on work?
• General - I will use a group of kids as the main protagonist's and they will run into people who are a lot
more knowledgeable and physically stronger to pose big threats. I will have likable characters.
• Locations - I will also have all my main locations spread out so there is a big gap in-between this is seen
in all adventure films to give the film the adventure aspects. The theme will be dark, mysterious and
scary at times.
• Music and Sound –

Style Sheet
For my video game idea I would like to have a dark colour scheme, especially when the characters are near the
abandoned farm. This will help set the scene as scary. When the characters are travelling to the farm, the
colours will be brighter, perhaps with more colour for grass, fields, trees and flowers.
As the levels progress the mood gets darker and darker until they find the money. This use of darkness will set
a creepier scene for the farm which is something I would like to implement. The health bar for the characters
will be similar to what’s used in Minecraft, for example things like hearts will be bright red.
This a basic dark color scene I may use in my game.
For fonts and texts I will use a simple ‘old school’ font so it is fitting for the time I choose to set it in:
I think this font works well (Avenir Next Condensed) as it looks like a typical old video game style font.
For the headings I will use (Bernard MT Condensed) so it is readable and stands out as a clear title.
For a task bar I will use something like this as it is simple and
straight forward.
Magazine and advert layouts
There are many ways to advertise a new film, the main way being
magazines. However there are also billboard advertisements and
trailers which are seen a lot on social media and also in some big
city’s. Magazines are probably one of the main ways to advertise a
film. The magazines will normally have the name of the film in big
writing with the writers name also featuring somewhere on the
page. For many adventure films the main characters will feature on
the front cover normally overlapping the heading to make them look
3D and stand out more. Something I found in my research though is
that a lot of horror/ adventure films the villain will actually be the
person on the front of magazines and advertisements this is quite
effective as it creates a sense of fear.
Most readers will associate and recognise the
villain which is good as it is exactly what the film
writer wants the villain character to do. Another
slight exception to both of these is if a film has big
movie stars in it will normally feature them on the
front for more buyers as they will know them.
Video Game layouts
The Escapist.
This is a really basic game just like the
one I will be making for my final project.
On this game the player stats are in the
top left corner out of the way giving a
big middle space to be able to watch
and control the character. Another good
thing about this game is it has an
inventory bar to show the items being
carried and task bar at the bottom
telling the player what to do.
Sonic.
The sonic game is another very basic
laid out game with time score and
rings (the currency in game) at the top
left. Again this is so the player can see
what is coming on the right so its
easier for them. There is also a life
count in the bottom left this is really
effective as most of the time you cant
even get close enough for that to
cover over anything important.
Mario.
This is one of the most iconic basic
games every created. The main
character is not moving, just the
background moving. The layouts for
this are again very basic with all the
character stats and information you
need to know being at the top out
of immediate view and not
covering anything important. The
headings at the top consist of
score, time, amount of coins
collected and what level you are
playing these are all essential to
have on a game like this.

Contingency
What can go wrong? What can you do if it does?
Equipment breaks Use spare equipment such as my iphone
Weather when filming isn’t good Find another day or accepts the weather as-is.
Can’t get to a location Choose a different closer and easier one.
Get stopped by police for breaking national lockdown Try explain to them why and try not to get fined.
Not have the right software at home Look for alternatives, ask friends and family.
Cast not being free on film days. Change cast or find another day they are free.
Not being able to travel places Make do and find spots near or local.
Risk Assessment
What could be a risk to you, others or the
equipment?
How can you make sure that doesn’t happen? What
will you do if it does?
Weather A way to prevent this is to choose a nice day however
if it does start getting bad going home or covering the
equipment is needed.
Laws (Covid lockdown) To reduce the risk of getting a fine we would only be
able to shoot for 1 hour a day.
Getting to locations Wearing the right clothes and not being stupid will
prevent any dangers when getting to locations.
Potentially spreading covid. Stick to the rules only shooting for an hour socially
distanced and wearing masks if in close proximity.
Property laws. Make sure we don’t go on any private property where
we could get fined or worse.
Production
Using your plans, produce:
• A synopsis for your film
• A video game that would support your film, to include a menu screen,
demo level and cut scene
• Sound track for the video game
• A magazine front cover, promoting the film
• Additional advertising to promote the film
Include synopsis, magazine cover and advertising in this pro forma.
Animation to be embedded in your blog.
Evaluation
Research
For the first part of my research I spent a lot of time looking at the different bits of how films are made, there are lots
of ‘behind the scenes’ videos on Youtube that give an insight into the various aspects of creating adventure films. The
majority of these films were high profile, successful ones which were well written, produced and directed. This part
of the research gave me a greater understanding of how to do things right instead of wrong.
Looking at a variety of films, magazine covers, games and other advertisements helped a lot as it broadened my
perspective on the different types and how they look after production. This also helped with my game and
advertisements, allowing me to use and match different aspects that all work really nicely together.
I think one weakness with my research though is I didn't go into much depth on any particular theme or genre, I more
choose to get a wide variety. Spending more time on focused research may have given me specific ideas that would
have improved my final project. I am not sure.
For the software research for this project I focused mainly on photo shop which was influenced by college as it has
been used by many students on the past and is the easiest to use etc. However this caused a problem as we went
into national lockdown during production which meant I had no immediate access to photo shop. As a contingency I
did some of my project on pixel art, which is free software. I did eventually find a free trial on photo shop allowing me
to finish my project, however my menu screen was made on pixel art. This wasn’t much of a struggle though as we
had also looked at working on pixel art previous to this.
Planning
My planning for this project was definitely a lot more in depth than my last project. This was one of the lessons I
learnt from my previous project, which was a good thing and has helped me produce a better project this time.
All of my work in this project was planned from the start, I had a clear plan of what information needed to go on each
slide and how I was going to edit my products. Breaking the project down into chunks helped me focus on each
activity and I was able to allocate time to spend on each part. The production also required a lot of planning to
ensure that the final quality was good and the game had a look and feel which seemed like a real game being played
by someone.
I probably went a bit over board with the planning and execution on my synopsis just to make the plot of the whole
project seem as realistic as possible. However, one major weakness in my planning was the impact of Covid and
national lockdown. This messed my planning up a bit as I had already completed half of my power point slides at
college before lockdown started and I forgot to make a back up at home so I had lost the work at college (another
lesson learnt which will be useful for future projects – keep backups of work at all times!).
This meant I had to completely start over with a completely different plot and style which put a lot of pressure to
finish in time as I was a few weeks behind. However, due to my good planning and better time management I should
be able to finish and hit the deadline.
Time Management
Initially I struggled with my time management for this project, but this improved as I went along. Something that
helped was breaking the project into chunks where I could allocate time to different parts and work on them as mini-
projects.
Having left much of my work at college prior to the national lockdown meant I had to start over which completely
messed up my time giving me weeks less than everyone else. However the time that I had I used really effectively to
get me back up to speed and hitting all of the project deadlines.
I seemed to lose a lot of time during the production phase. There was a lot to do during production, combined with
having to learn how to use the software meant that progress was slow. I also feel that I rushed a few pieces of my
work as I needed to move on to other tasks to avoid falling behind.
If I had more time I would have liked to show more detail on some aspects of the production, for example the menu
screen would have been made on photo shop and not pixel art making it look more professional. I think if I had more
time on this project I could have done a bit better of a job and produced some higher quality work.
I would have done this by putting more research into my production, giving a lot more detailed in the final production
and ensured it played a lot smother. However, all things considered I am still happy with my final projects.
Technical Qualities
For the technical qualities of my work I am going
to compare it to the old pixel art Mario games as
they both use a similar pixel format. In fact for
my cut scene I decided to use the exact
dimensions that Mario was made in for an old
style cut-scene this works well as that’s probably
the best I could do while working with pixels.
I think that this worked quite affectively and
gave my game a more professional look. A big
difference however was choosing to do a more
3D looking game where the angles are looking
down on the game instead of having a flat game
where only the background moves.
This did come with its challenges though as it
meant a lot of different layers all had to come
together and work smoothly as one, meaning I
needed to have different rotations and views on
the character depending where they are and
which direction they are moving.
Having to build up a lot of different layers meant that I had to title and
know exactly what needed to be seen at each stage, this was a lot of
work and quite challenging.
I did manage to do it though by using lots of layers which were all set
at different times. Another major difference and problem I came
across while doing this in the cut scene I had to create a whole new
pixel art file and make a completely new background and everything
just for the cut scene.
The reason why this is different is that in the Mario games all the cut-
scenes were made over the level backgrounds which makes them flow
a lot nicer and is a lot easier to do.
Aesthetic Qualities
The aesthetics of my project work very well when compared to a game such as the Escapist as
they are both viewed by a top angle view which are used in most free roam pixel art games.
I did get a lot of my ideas from this game, this is evident from the speech boxes which are similar. I
also used a similar inventory style to my game. However I didn’t add a time limit or score to my
game as it was an open world game with one mission getting to the farm.
I guess you could compare the game to something like Zelder in the level set outs. If I had more
time I would have added a task menu, however I think it gives the player a better view without it.
Overall I think my game is quite aesthetic and works very well.
Magazine cover.
For my magazine cover I choose a simple cover without
any of my cast for the main reason that we were in a
national lockdown over the time of production so I had
to make do without. I choose to go to the country side
and find a rural farm to use in my magazine. However if
was going to do it again I would have definitely done it
with a member of the cast in.
Aural Qualities
For my aural qualities I decided to keep them basic and not to go into great detail as I feel the look and feel of the
game is more important. I had a basic walking sound effect and used leaves to make it a little more realistic
given the context of the game and the scenes.
For other sound affects I used a lot of digital sound from software such as beepbox and others, this is easy to do
and provides a lot of retro sounding sounds, for example for when a player is getting hurt.
For most of the other sound affects I used things at home and in the garden (for effects such as sticks and leaves)
which were recorded with basic microphones. For the background music I choose a royalty free song as it was
more fitting than any one I could have created myself, this also saved me some time.
I did spend some time making my own while doing the production and I have included the links higher up in the
PowerPoint. Over all I think my game sound affects and background music both work well with my game and cut
scene and I am happy how the overall projects sounds.
Audience Appeal
I think I did very well to appeal to my target audience through this whole project, this is something I am very
pleased with. I think the approach I took and how I made the project makes it very appealing.
Starting from the synopsis, the film idea can be considered good family viewing. Likewise, the game
complements the film and they fit well together.
The game, being an open world allows anyone with any skill level to be able to play it. The game is targeted at
teens to adults with no graphic content meaning anyone can play it. Also the pixel art style keeps everything
simple and still exciting for players of any age which is very similar to the Mario and Zelder games mentioned
earlier.
These types of games are targeted at all ages and are simple to get the gist of the plot, what is going on and
what a player needs to do to play and complete it. My magazine cover also had a good audience appeal as it
was based on my research of many different magazines which were targeting the same type of audiences as
mine.
Overall the aim of this project was to appeal to a wide audience of all ages and abilities. I feel that I really
achieved this aim with this project.
Overall strengths and weaknesses of the final
package.
For my overall strength's of this project my time management was a lot better as I got use to working from home this
helped a lot as it allowed me to finish everything on time. I did this by using good planning skills and keeping motivated
to finish it . I also adapted to using other software's that I haven't previously used this happened with the last project
however now I am use to doing it so I found it a lot easier and I will probably use it again in my next projects as I will
most likely still be working at home for a percentage of it.
For my weaknesses my biggest one was staying motivated under the working from home conditions this did progress
throughout the project however was never peak and as focused as I would have like. this is something out of my control
though and we all had to adapt however it did make these projects harder to get finished. Other weaknesses is I had no
camera so my shots and audio was just shot on my phone meaning its lower quality but easier to function I also
struggled to find a laptop that would work with my editing software of choice however finally found one that overcame
this issue other than that this project was enjoyable and I managed to hit the deadline for this project.

Adventure pro forma (1)

  • 2. Life before being in the maze is all taken away so he doesn't remember where he came from. He is put into a maze and wakes up not remembering how or why he is there. Talks to the other kids there and decides they need to get out putting himself forward as a ‘runner’ role that helps them a lot. They escape the maze and realise that the people watching them had been killed. They are found by a government source that reveals the world is dying and they will keep them safe . Maze Runner
  • 3. Character type How they appear in your story The Hero The hero in the maze runner is the main character ‘Thomas’ with is driving ambition to get out the maze and he succeeded. The Villain In this film there are several people you could class as the villain starting with people within the group being the kids that turned on them at the end however I think the main villain is the people controlling the maze. The Helper They all showed characteristics as this cast member as they all had to work together and there was not one working more and being more united than each other. The Donor In this film there was no donor as the film is carried on in several other films and they were welcomed by the people that are the villains. The Dispatcher Again this film doesn't really have one as Thomas is very self motivated to get out and he is doing it for himself and the others. The Princess or prize This prize in this case was their freedom after getting out the maze however after they got out they never really got freedom. The Princess’s Father In this film we could see the people that are controlling them to be this person as they put them there for a reason however this film doesn’t have a physical representation of this. The False Hero I this film it would be the character ‘Gally’ as right at the end he turns on the group when they don’t listen to him and kills one of them.
  • 4. WWWWWH Who A group of teens all male other than one. What They are trapped in the middle of a massive maze with no memory of how or why they are there or got there. Why We never find out as this they made 2 more films after this one so it is explained further down the line. When This film is set in the future with a completely different society to the one we have at this current time. Where This is again just a location of setting for where the films meant to take place. However very few adventure films actually get filmed in these places. How They first plan to escape and achieve this at the end of the film they are expecting freedom when they escape however are met straight with capture by the same people that put them in the maze.
  • 6. The Mask Adventure/ horror Who A group of young teenagers. What They go looking for a killer who travels round the UK abducting teens and adults which they later kill or use as a bribe for money. Why The main group of kids are looking for the killer as they have taken one of the friends in this group. When This would be set in the 1960s so there was no easy access to telephones no social media and the police system was quite bad with working big cases like this. This also helps the horror/ adventure theme seem a bit more realistic. Where For this film I would have it set in the UK and have the villain in this case the killer traveling town to town. How They do this by stealing intel from the police finding hints that the killer left behind whilst also talking to past victims for any information they can get.
  • 7. The Farm Who Set around a group of young kids aged 13-14 years. What There is an old rumour going round about an abandoned farm near to where the kids live. The farm is said to have £1 million stored in the attic from the previous owner. The whole town has been looking for this farm however no one has ever been successful. Why There motivation for finding this money is to split it between all of them as they are all from poor family's and it would help them live happily ever after. When This will be set in the 60’s there will be no help from google maps they will have to adventure far and wide to try find it. They will also have limited transport, perhaps just legs and bikes. Where This will be set in a small town in the middle of nowhere in the UK so they will be quite distant from the rest of the world however that doesn't stop some treasure seekers coming to try find it. How They will do this by talking to older locals that have hints of where the farm and money could be. They will also do a lot of research and travel as far as they can to find it.
  • 8. Making It Who A child born into a family of crime and violence. What The child grows up and decides he wants to change life of crime and ends up being a rich investor with nice cars and big houses. Why He doesn't want to be a criminal anymore and is very money motivated so he wants to start investing in big stocks to get him get money and out of his home streets. When Present day or maybe 1990s so it could have an old gangster vibe to make it feel more realistic. Where London. The main character will grow up on the out skirts of London and end up in a big house in London centre. How He will do this through a lot of research and hustling to be the best and to get to the top.
  • 9. Mind Map: The Farm Set in 60s Set in the UK Old fashioned game and film style. Characters 2 main characters Allows for the game to be single or multi player. names Jonny Mike Various other characters the 2 come across setting Small town or village in the countryside. No one really around other than locals. Other people trying to find it and also people trying to protect it. Dress code All the actors will dress retro 60s Including the gang being an old school sort of gang with guns and other weapons Adventure Looking for a farm Meant to be rural however is full of a highly armed gang.
  • 10. Mood board: The Farm This is my mood board for ”The Farm” idea. I have included countryside landscapes and the types of things the characters (kids) may run into. Most of the farms will be old, rural places with no one around. Note that these photos have a dark colour theme as this is something I will probably implement into my own work.
  • 11. Mood board: The Farm The types of farm houses will be old, abandoned places which provide an ideal setting for the film. I want to have a scary element to the scenes. The main characters will be teenagers from the 60’s, they will be wearing clothes similar to these. Jeans were very common in the 60’s with tees and jackets. The main characters will encounter things like scary dogs which will be used to protect the gangs and the farm houses.
  • 13. IT – adventure/horror film IT as a film is probably one of the best in its genre. It is advertised as an adventure horror and I think it does this very well. The plot is based on a group of young kids around 13-14 against a clown that seems to literally be invincible. The kids are after him as he is the one responsible for taking the younger brother from a main character in the group. This is their whole motivation and the clown also knows that leading them into traps and playing a sort of cat and mouse game with the kids . For a magazine cover a lot of horror films follow a similar pattern with the bad guy always featuring more on the advertisements. All the magazine covers for this film has the clown on, this is to scare the reader and makes them read it. Also with it being a clown it scares a lot more people as there are a lot of people with a phobia of clowns. This film, being a horror uses a lot of the basic horror angles and soundtrack patterns with the music being creepy and old. The music like in other films is sped up and changes in stressful situations. The camera angles and editing style is also sped up when the characters are faced with a difficult or scary situation. They also change when the clown comes into shots to give a sort of stand-off vibe to the audience. This film was also set in the 1970s meaning the editing and shots are all darker to give it old vibe. This also helps the film look more scary and doesn't help the kids as they don’t have
  • 14. Jumanji – adventure film Jumanji is a film where a group of kids find an old gaming console in the attic and decide to play it. After plugging it in the kids all get sucked into the magical world of Jumanji and the only way to get out is to complete the game. They each have set amount of lives and different special ability's. They go adventuring around this magical world doing tasks and finding things to help them escape. It has a very basic theme tune sounding something out of an old game . This magazine, unlike the previous one has a big picture of the main cast on instead of the villain, this is because it wants to glorify them instead of who they are against. They also choose to put the main cast on the front as they are very well known actors which helps sales for the magazine and other advertisements as everyone wants to see their favorite actors more than just a random cast. The game they released is also very popular, targeting the same younger audience as the film did. In the game you get to choose which character you play and you can choose where you go. The game has lots of levels to complete and the way you complete them is by killing bad guys and collecting gems. When you have all of the gems the door unlocks letting you venture into the next section of the game.
  • 15. Maze Runner – adventure film. The Maze Runner is a really good adventure film, about a group of older teens around 17-19. They all wake up in a lift not remembering anything from their past and appear to be in the center of a massive maze. The film follows the second till last person to enter called “Thomas” and how he and the rest of the kids escape the maze to find that the whole world had been destroyed. The sound track for this film as like background music on a video game it is pretty slow paced and gives off pretty chill vibes. This is strange as it’s about kids stuck in a maze. Also the filming in the film is very clever and must have used a lot of CGI. The magazine cover for this film in my opinion isn’t very good as it doesn't show anything to do with the film other than the main character. This doesn't really draw people in. The film title is also not very good as it is just a normal big font which isn’t very eye catching. Another thing I don’t really like about this cover is there is quite a lot of writing blocking a lot of the picture other than the main characters face which is in front making it stand out more.
  • 16. Jurassic Park – adventure film. Jurassic Park is a great adventure movie franchise they have made several movies around the same basic plot of a group of scientists and animal researchers that have created dinosaurs on a uninhabited island. It shows their journey from the first time they step foot on the island to the day dinosaurs are brought back onto the mainland. I think this is a really good film as it has a lot of traveling and interactions with dinosaurs. The film also has one of the most iconic theme tunes in film history. The filming must have been very difficult for this movie as the characters have to interact with CGI dinosaurs. However the way they filmed and edited it For this magazine cover I choose I think it works very well because the picture in the middle is big and eye catching with the main character and a massive dinosaur. The image is also very dark making the writing stand out. Another good thing is they put his face over the writing so you can see his face on a white background. Something else they did well is they are advertising their other films as well, so fans will see a whole range instead of just one. The game they realised for these films is completely different to the films themselves. The main aim on the game is to collect as many different dinosaurs as you can. There are no actual levels, it’s a collecting game. It would have been hard and taken really good graphics to achieve a good playable game for films like this. So instead they made a simple collecting game and that's all you can do on it.
  • 17. Research Summary • What have you learned from your research? • General - there is a lot of common themes in most adventure films. Hero, Villain, likeable characters, simple plot, satisfying ending. • Adverts – they should have clear images and text, perhaps with well known characters that the viewer recognises or can relate to. The font type and size should be easy to read and see to make them stand out. • Video Trailers – lots of action, fast pace with a cliff hanger leaving the viewer wanting to see more. • What aspects of the research will you include within your on work? • General - I will use a group of kids as the main protagonist's and they will run into people who are a lot more knowledgeable and physically stronger to pose big threats. I will have likable characters. • Locations - I will also have all my main locations spread out so there is a big gap in-between this is seen in all adventure films to give the film the adventure aspects. The theme will be dark, mysterious and scary at times. • Music and Sound –

  • 20. Style Sheet For my video game idea I would like to have a dark colour scheme, especially when the characters are near the abandoned farm. This will help set the scene as scary. When the characters are travelling to the farm, the colours will be brighter, perhaps with more colour for grass, fields, trees and flowers. As the levels progress the mood gets darker and darker until they find the money. This use of darkness will set a creepier scene for the farm which is something I would like to implement. The health bar for the characters will be similar to what’s used in Minecraft, for example things like hearts will be bright red. This a basic dark color scene I may use in my game. For fonts and texts I will use a simple ‘old school’ font so it is fitting for the time I choose to set it in: I think this font works well (Avenir Next Condensed) as it looks like a typical old video game style font. For the headings I will use (Bernard MT Condensed) so it is readable and stands out as a clear title. For a task bar I will use something like this as it is simple and straight forward.
  • 21. Magazine and advert layouts There are many ways to advertise a new film, the main way being magazines. However there are also billboard advertisements and trailers which are seen a lot on social media and also in some big city’s. Magazines are probably one of the main ways to advertise a film. The magazines will normally have the name of the film in big writing with the writers name also featuring somewhere on the page. For many adventure films the main characters will feature on the front cover normally overlapping the heading to make them look 3D and stand out more. Something I found in my research though is that a lot of horror/ adventure films the villain will actually be the person on the front of magazines and advertisements this is quite effective as it creates a sense of fear. Most readers will associate and recognise the villain which is good as it is exactly what the film writer wants the villain character to do. Another slight exception to both of these is if a film has big movie stars in it will normally feature them on the front for more buyers as they will know them.
  • 22. Video Game layouts The Escapist. This is a really basic game just like the one I will be making for my final project. On this game the player stats are in the top left corner out of the way giving a big middle space to be able to watch and control the character. Another good thing about this game is it has an inventory bar to show the items being carried and task bar at the bottom telling the player what to do. Sonic. The sonic game is another very basic laid out game with time score and rings (the currency in game) at the top left. Again this is so the player can see what is coming on the right so its easier for them. There is also a life count in the bottom left this is really effective as most of the time you cant even get close enough for that to cover over anything important. Mario. This is one of the most iconic basic games every created. The main character is not moving, just the background moving. The layouts for this are again very basic with all the character stats and information you need to know being at the top out of immediate view and not covering anything important. The headings at the top consist of score, time, amount of coins collected and what level you are playing these are all essential to have on a game like this.

Your kidding me, we have come this far, we’re going in. “ *Gangsters laughing and joking in the background* Jonny – “errrrr what's the plan? How are we going to get past those guys and the dogs?” Mike – “Follow me!” Jonny – “No no wait… don’t… who's that?” *Rustling in the bushes behind them* This extract of the script has been taken from the part when the teenagers stumble across the farm which looks to be guarded by the gang.

  • 27. Contingency What can go wrong? What can you do if it does? Equipment breaks Use spare equipment such as my iphone Weather when filming isn’t good Find another day or accepts the weather as-is.
  • 28. Risk Assessment What could be a risk to you, others or the equipment? How can you make sure that doesn’t happen? What will you do if it does? Weather A way to prevent this is to choose a nice day however if it does start getting bad going home or covering the equipment is needed. Laws (Covid lockdown) To reduce the risk of getting a fine we would only be able to shoot for 1 hour a day. Getting to locations Wearing the right clothes and not being stupid will prevent any dangers when getting to locations. Potentially spreading covid. Stick to the rules only shooting for an hour socially distanced and wearing masks if in close proximity. Property laws. Make sure we don’t go on any private property where we could get fined or worse.
  • 30. Using your plans, produce: • A synopsis for your film • A video game that would support your film, to include a menu screen, demo level and cut scene • Sound track for the video game • A magazine front cover, promoting the film • Additional advertising to promote the film Include synopsis, magazine cover and advertising in this pro forma. Animation to be embedded in your blog.
  • 32. Research For the first part of my research I spent a lot of time looking at the different bits of how films are made, there are lots of ‘behind the scenes’ videos on Youtube that give an insight into the various aspects of creating adventure films. The majority of these films were high profile, successful ones which were well written, produced and directed. This part of the research gave me a greater understanding of how to do things right instead of wrong. Looking at a variety of films, magazine covers, games and other advertisements helped a lot as it broadened my perspective on the different types and how they look after production. This also helped with my game and advertisements, allowing me to use and match different aspects that all work really nicely together. I think one weakness with my research though is I didn't go into much depth on any particular theme or genre, I more choose to get a wide variety. Spending more time on focused research may have given me specific ideas that would have improved my final project. I am not sure. For the software research for this project I focused mainly on photo shop which was influenced by college as it has been used by many students on the past and is the easiest to use etc. However this caused a problem as we went into national lockdown during production which meant I had no immediate access to photo shop. As a contingency I did some of my project on pixel art, which is free software. I did eventually find a free trial on photo shop allowing me to finish my project, however my menu screen was made on pixel art. This wasn’t much of a struggle though as we had also looked at working on pixel art previous to this.
  • 33. Planning My planning for this project was definitely a lot more in depth than my last project. This was one of the lessons I learnt from my previous project, which was a good thing and has helped me produce a better project this time. All of my work in this project was planned from the start, I had a clear plan of what information needed to go on each slide and how I was going to edit my products. Breaking the project down into chunks helped me focus on each activity and I was able to allocate time to spend on each part. The production also required a lot of planning to ensure that the final quality was good and the game had a look and feel which seemed like a real game being played by someone. I probably went a bit over board with the planning and execution on my synopsis just to make the plot of the whole project seem as realistic as possible. However, one major weakness in my planning was the impact of Covid and national lockdown. This messed my planning up a bit as I had already completed half of my power point slides at college before lockdown started and I forgot to make a back up at home so I had lost the work at college (another lesson learnt which will be useful for future projects – keep backups of work at all times!). This meant I had to completely start over with a completely different plot and style which put a lot of pressure to finish in time as I was a few weeks behind. However, due to my good planning and better time management I should be able to finish and hit the deadline.
  • 34. Time Management Initially I struggled with my time management for this project, but this improved as I went along. Something that helped was breaking the project into chunks where I could allocate time to different parts and work on them as mini- projects. Having left much of my work at college prior to the national lockdown meant I had to start over which completely messed up my time giving me weeks less than everyone else. However the time that I had I used really effectively to get me back up to speed and hitting all of the project deadlines. I seemed to lose a lot of time during the production phase. There was a lot to do during production, combined with having to learn how to use the software meant that progress was slow. I also feel that I rushed a few pieces of my work as I needed to move on to other tasks to avoid falling behind. If I had more time I would have liked to show more detail on some aspects of the production, for example the menu screen would have been made on photo shop and not pixel art making it look more professional. I think if I had more time on this project I could have done a bit better of a job and produced some higher quality work. I would have done this by putting more research into my production, giving a lot more detailed in the final production and ensured it played a lot smother. However, all things considered I am still happy with my final projects.
  • 35. Technical Qualities For the technical qualities of my work I am going to compare it to the old pixel art Mario games as they both use a similar pixel format. In fact for my cut scene I decided to use the exact dimensions that Mario was made in for an old style cut-scene this works well as that’s probably the best I could do while working with pixels. I think that this worked quite affectively and gave my game a more professional look. A big difference however was choosing to do a more 3D looking game where the angles are looking down on the game instead of having a flat game where only the background moves. This did come with its challenges though as it meant a lot of different layers all had to come together and work smoothly as one, meaning I needed to have different rotations and views on the character depending where they are and which direction they are moving. Having to build up a lot of different layers meant that I had to title and know exactly what needed to be seen at each stage, this was a lot of work and quite challenging. I did manage to do it though by using lots of layers which were all set at different times. Another major difference and problem I came across while doing this in the cut scene I had to create a whole new pixel art file and make a completely new background and everything just for the cut scene. The reason why this is different is that in the Mario games all the cut- scenes were made over the level backgrounds which makes them flow a lot nicer and is a lot easier to do.
  • 36. Aesthetic Qualities The aesthetics of my project work very well when compared to a game such as the Escapist as they are both viewed by a top angle view which are used in most free roam pixel art games. I did get a lot of my ideas from this game, this is evident from the speech boxes which are similar. I also used a similar inventory style to my game. However I didn’t add a time limit or score to my game as it was an open world game with one mission getting to the farm. I guess you could compare the game to something like Zelder in the level set outs. If I had more time I would have added a task menu, however I think it gives the player a better view without it. Overall I think my game is quite aesthetic and works very well. Magazine cover. For my magazine cover I choose a simple cover without any of my cast for the main reason that we were in a national lockdown over the time of production so I had to make do without. I choose to go to the country side and find a rural farm to use in my magazine. However if was going to do it again I would have definitely done it with a member of the cast in.
  • 37. Aural Qualities For my aural qualities I decided to keep them basic and not to go into great detail as I feel the look and feel of the game is more important. I had a basic walking sound effect and used leaves to make it a little more realistic given the context of the game and the scenes. For other sound affects I used a lot of digital sound from software such as beepbox and others, this is easy to do and provides a lot of retro sounding sounds, for example for when a player is getting hurt. For most of the other sound affects I used things at home and in the garden (for effects such as sticks and leaves) which were recorded with basic microphones. For the background music I choose a royalty free song as it was more fitting than any one I could have created myself, this also saved me some time. I did spend some time making my own while doing the production and I have included the links higher up in the PowerPoint. Over all I think my game sound affects and background music both work well with my game and cut scene and I am happy how the overall projects sounds.
  • 38. Audience Appeal I think I did very well to appeal to my target audience through this whole project, this is something I am very pleased with. I think the approach I took and how I made the project makes it very appealing. Starting from the synopsis, the film idea can be considered good family viewing. Likewise, the game complements the film and they fit well together. The game, being an open world allows anyone with any skill level to be able to play it. The game is targeted at teens to adults with no graphic content meaning anyone can play it. Also the pixel art style keeps everything simple and still exciting for players of any age which is very similar to the Mario and Zelder games mentioned earlier. These types of games are targeted at all ages and are simple to get the gist of the plot, what is going on and what a player needs to do to play and complete it. My magazine cover also had a good audience appeal as it was based on my research of many different magazines which were targeting the same type of audiences as mine. Overall the aim of this project was to appeal to a wide audience of all ages and abilities. I feel that I really achieved this aim with this project.
  • 39. Overall strengths and weaknesses of the final package. For my overall strength's of this project my time management was a lot better as I got use to working from home this helped a lot as it allowed me to finish everything on time. I did this by using good planning skills and keeping motivated to finish it . I also adapted to using other software's that I haven't previously used this happened with the last project however now I am use to doing it so I found it a lot easier and I will probably use it again in my next projects as I will most likely still be working at home for a percentage of it. For my weaknesses my biggest one was staying motivated under the working from home conditions this did progress throughout the project however was never peak and as focused as I would have like. this is something out of my control though and we all had to adapt however it did make these projects harder to get finished. Other weaknesses is I had no camera so my shots and audio was just shot on my phone meaning its lower quality but easier to function I also struggled to find a laptop that would work with my editing software of choice however finally found one that overcame this issue other than that this project was enjoyable and I managed to hit the deadline for this project. Strengths Weaknesses
