daily work they are confronted by a
variety of patients and problems that
need to be handled in an ethical manner.

15. Duty to Make Sure the Patient Gives Free and Informed
Consent
The reason behind the duty of doctors to provide
information to patients is to give patients all the
information they need to make free and informed
decisions with full knowledge of the facts about the
treatment and care offered. When a patient agrees to
treatment or care, this is called consent.
The duty to get the consent of patients is a continuous
process. This is why patients must be kept informed about
any new information about their states of health and the
treatments they are receiving

Radiography Standards of Practice by the American
Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT), supplement
the code of conduct for radiographers in South Africa. It
prescribes that radiographers’ that personal prejudices
should not affect professional relationships and that they
should not abuse the power entrusted to them.

You are obliged to co-operate with carers , other
healthcare professionals, hospital staff and social care
professionals. You should seek to understand and respect
their responsibilities, needs, skills and working practices
to ensure the best interests of all service users and avoid
inappropriate criticism of them.
20. Communication: Communicate with patients, carers and
other professionals
You must:
communicate sensitively and effectively with patients,
carers and their families, taking into account any special
needs when communicating with children and vulnerable
adults.
Radiographers need to elicit confidence from their
patients by providing accurate explanations and
instructions at a level that the patients can understand
co-operate and share your knowledge and expertise with
colleagues and students for the benefit of patients.

safety.
You must:
be responsible for the optimization of any ionizing or non-
ionizing radiation dose to patients consistent with the
ALARA principle (As Low As Reasonably Achievable). This
applies to all imaging modalities and radiation therapy
. make sure that carers , colleagues and the public are not
unnecessarily exposed to radiation;
only accept properly authorized requests or referrals in
line with current legislation and where these requests or
referrals are for examination or treatment that will be of
benefit to the patient; d.
take responsibility for justifying any medical exposure
involving ionizing radiation;
. report any near misses or errors in procedures or
treatments through your department’s reporting channels
