2. Objective of class
• At the end of class student will be able to understand the basic
concepts of chemistry
• Student will be able to know the application of chemistry in nursing
3. What is chemistry?
It is a branch of science that deals with the properties, composition and
structure of matter. It deals with the changes involved in the matter, also
deals with the principles governing the changes which matter may undergo.
• Application of chemistry in daily life
Chemistry enables us to design all sorts of materials, drugs to fight
disease, pesticides to protect our health and fertilizers to grow our
crops for abundant food, fuels for transportation, fibers to provide
comfort and variety in clothes and a lot of other things.
Chemistry also helps us to understand the nature of our
environment and about ourselves. The theories of chemistry
illuminate our understanding of the material world from tiny atom
to giant galaxies.
4. Importance of chemistry in Nursing
• Nursing is an art and science, which deals with patients and require to
understand many challenges, social, emotional, behavioral and
besides it they must understand chemistry.
• Chemistry in nursing is very important, for it sets the basis for
understanding the medications that are being administered to certain
patients
5. Indeed, the two are Related
• Biochemistry studies different activities that occur in the body and
the chemical process involved in the body. These processes include
the formation of fat, lipids, proteins, and carbohydrate.
• What happens during inhalation and exhalation
• A deep knowledge of chemistry is essential in order to know exactly
how to administer medicines to patients.
• Knowledge about these combinations is essential because a wrong
combination could harm patient.
6. Example
• Cephalosporins are a specific group of antibiotics that treat and fight
off a variety of bacterial infections in the human body. Each drug
within this group kills a certain type of bacteria.
• Insulin, Dextrose and other fluid administration
• It is vital for nurses to have the knowledge and know the differences
in what they are administering to patients.
7. Involving Chemistry
• The nurse must understand the present condition of the patient and
understand the importance and difference in Sodium, Potassium,
Chloride, Bicarbonate, Carbon dioxide, Oxygen, and many other
elements and electrolytes in the body.
• This understanding will guide the nurse to identify if there is an
electrolyte imbalance.
8. All in all
• It is vital for nurses to have the skills to take care of their patient
emotionally, but it is also important that the nurse have the necessary
knowledge to interpret data regarding patient condition to treat the
physically and possibly mental symptoms accurately and in a timely
manner.
