1. The Soul as Khalifah

2. Vicegerent
͢ A person exercising delegated power on behalf of a sovereign or ruler
͢ A leader, person regarded as an earthly representative of god.
Soul
 the soul (nafs) is the real person as the body is considered as a mere physical entity (theology).
 Created by God, becomes immortal
 God summoned the soul in order to testify about his acknowledgement of the Leadership of
God.
“When thy Lord drew forth from the children of Adam-from
their loins- their descendants, and made them testify
concerning themselves, (saying): Am I not your Lord (who
cherishes and sustains you)?: they said: Yea! We do testify!”
(Surah Al-A’raf 7:172”

3. Soul as Khalifah (Vicegerent)
 Soul is equipped with knowledge
 Entrusted with a) Amanah (trust), b) implementation of justice, and c)
commandment of God.
Soul = vicegerent/King
Body = kingdom
Visible Armies:
external senses
 Seeing
 Hearing
 Smelling
 Tasting
 Touching
These armies are
subservient to the
order of the king
(soul). (Al-Ghazali)
Invisible Armies
internal senses
 Common sense
 Thought
 Imagination
 Memory
 Judgement/discriminate

4. Physical Body (kingdom)
desire
Anger - police within the kingdom
Soul (King)
peace and order which includes discipline for desire and anger under the
dictates of reason and justice.
i.e. patience – controlled desire
greed – worst status of desire
enforced the commandment and will of God
accountable for whatever disobedience committed by its kingdom
Real Essence of Man:
• World of Dominion (Al-malakut)
• World of Command (Al-amr)

5. States of the Soul:
Tranquil Soul (Al-nafs Al-mutma’innah)
• Qalbun Saleem
• When the divine peace (al-Sakinah) descends, and the effusion of divine liberality
is successively diffused until it achieves tranquility in the a. remembrance of God, b.
abides in the knowledge of His divinity, and c. soars towards the highest level of the
angelic horizon.
“O (righteous) soul, in complete rest and satisfaction!
Comeback thou to the Lord, well pleased (thyself) and well-
pleasing unto Him. Enter thou, then among My devotees! Yea,
enter thou my Heaven.”

6. Beastial Nature / Animal Powers (Al-nafs Al-lawwamah)
• Qalbun Mayyit
• Soul is drag down to the lowest foothills of the beastial nature by the animal
powers.
• Earnest struggle with its animal power.
• State of the soul called “Incites of Evil”
“Allah says: The (human) soul certainly incites evil unless
My Lord bestow His mercy!”
Al-nafs Hawa
• Qalbun Maridh
• When soul is never contented and the greediness overpowers.

7. Intellectual Development
Physical Body Spiritual Development
- through the body faculties, the soul can acquire the information and data.
Which through its various faculties, the soul develop these sense-data into a.
general principles, b. ideas, and c. beliefs.
