GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN BUSINESS
(BUSINESS ANALYSIS)
The Graduate Diploma in Business enables students who have completed
a bachelor’s degree to achieve a graduate level qualification in a
specialised area of business.
The International Institute of Business Analysis defines the role as being
“an agent for change”. The role has increasing importance as employees
and departments within organisations become increasingly specialised.
The business analysis must analyse and understand the links between
the parts to advise other and introduce change. Essential courses for the
business analyst role are compulsory within the programme, remaining
courses can be selected from a wide choice to meet your specific needs.
The Graduate Diploma in Business (Business Analysis) is subject to
NZQA approval.
This programme of study includes holiday or study breaks during which
there are no scheduled classes. Students may find it necessary to spend
time during non-teaching weeks working on assignments and other
study-related tasks set during the teaching weeks.

BUSINESS ANALYST (COMPUTER SYSTEM ANALYST/
SYSTEMS DESIGNER/SYSTEMS ANALYST)
This endorsement will assist in preparing students for a role as a business
analyst, or related roles such as business process analyst, business intelligence

Business Project
To enable students to apply the skills gained during their BBS studies to date in a business or professional
environment. The project will provide students with an opportunity to research, select, integrate, and extend their
knowledge of business practices within a specified sub-discipline.
PRE-REQUISITE: Normally RESM6.01 and at least 30 credits at level 7. The specific prerequisites required will
depend on the topic proposed and must be approved by the Programme Coordinator. Each Project must be approved
by the Programme Coordinator, proposed Academic Supervisor, and Head of the School of Business.

Strategic Management
To enable students to analyse, evaluate and synthesise the critical aspects of strategic management and to be able
to integrate its various aspects into a form which can be implemented and controlled.
PRE-REQUISITE: Relevant knowledge, skills, and experience in the business field.

To develop an understanding of the business analyst’s role in facilitating and recommending change to improve

Successful completion of a three year degree or equivalent qualification
(please see your country specific entry requirements) or applicants from
industry who can demonstrate evidence of significant work and professional
experience at degree level or above. These applicants will be required to
participate in an interview.
Graduates from non-business disciplines may require preparatory study
before enrolment.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
Students are required to have attained an acceptable level of English language
fluency. This may be demonstrated in a variety of ways, including successful
study in English, approved scores on TOEFL or IELTS (6.0 Academic), with no
band score lower than 5.5 or equivalent.

This programme is designed for those wishing to pursue a management career in
the health sector. If you are a health professional already you may be interested in
the programme to further your career managing your professional colleagues. If
you do not possess a qualification in health your career avenues are more likely to
be in the area of general management and administration in any of a wide range
of health organisations. The programme selects the most relevant management
skills you will require in the sector and teaches them in the health context.

Advanced Health Services Management
To develop an understanding of the health sector manager’s role in audit and assurance processes and performance
management techniques. The course will also examine the strategic role of the manager in a health organisations
setting and the effect of government policy changes to health organisations. There will be a focus on providing
recommendations to make improvements within the sector.
PRE-REQUISITE: HMAN6.01 Health Services Management.

Special Topic
Students will develop their skills in using the literature to identifying important themes and possible paradoxes in relation
to a specific topic. The review’s topic will be relevant to the student’s major. The study will form a coherent summary
of appropriate sources but in contrast with an academic review article may not provide new perspectives on the topic. A
Special Topic course may be linked to another project course with the approval of the Programme Coordinator.
PRE-REQUISITE: Sixty credits at Level 6, normally including RESM6.01 Research Methods. Approval of the
Programme Co-ordinator who will apply the following criteria: the student has sufficient grounding in the topic to be
investigated; the availability of a staff member to act as a supervisor; and the student has a grade average of B in
relevant courses.

To provide a treatment of operations strategy which is clear, well-structured and interesting. To develop an understanding
of the principles which underpin operations strategy and to apply these principles to a variety of businesses and

The Graduate Diploma in Business enables students who have completed a
bachelor’s degree to achieve a graduate level qualification in a specialised area
of business.
The Sales and Marketing specialist option aims to provide students with
the opportunity to add sales and marketing studies to their undergraduate
qualification in another discipline. Graduates will be able to:
• Demonstrate a technical, analytical, and conceptual understanding of the
role of sales and marketing in the business environment;
• Foster a strategic and global perspective in the practice of sales and
marketing;
• Respond to the changing economic, technological, political, legal, and social
environments, as these relate to the practice of sales and marketing; and,

To enable students to think strategically about marketing situations; be aware of the major aspects of planning and

PRE-REQUISITES: At least 15 credits in marketing at Level 6 AND relevant knowledge, skills, and experience in the

The Graduate Diploma in Business enables students who have completed

Supply chain is a critical competitive issue in many organisations and
so this programme does not limit you to a specific industry although
the transport industry will always be one of the larger employment
destinations. Globalisation and technical developments mean the field is
rapidly developing and requiring new skills. This programme will equip you

export volumes increasing by approximately 70% to 2014 and export
revenue increasing from $800 million to $1.4 billion over that time. This
growth is due in large measure to our sales and marketing efforts with
great potential for further growth in emerging markets such as China. This
programme is designed to give specialist knowledge and skills required for
employment in wine sales and marketing in both the international and the
NZ domestic arenas.

To provide an overview of the historical development of grape and wine production in New Zealand and around the world.
Students are introduced to winemaking principles and basic winemaking processes involved in the production of major wine

reflective of the regional agreements that affects international business; and to effectively apply the international business
requirements to a New Zealand business for entry into the global arena.

Wine Business Management
This course will cover the nature of the wine industry and the framework within which it operates nationally and
internationally. It will include legislation of relevance to the wine business, such as the Wine Act 2003, the Sale of Liquor Act,
New Zealand (Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code) Food Standards 2002, Wine Standards Management Programmes
and Hazard Analysis, Critical Control Point methodology, wine export regulations and procedures, and Customs procedures and
requirements. An understanding of relevant local body regulations and parts of the Resource Management Act will also have
been gained. Students will also have an understanding of export procedures, as well as the structure of the New Zealand
market, and relevant overseas markets. Coverage will also have been given on the role of industry bodies such as New Zealand
Wine Growers and the Alcohol Liquor Advisory Committee.

Supply chain is a critical competitive issue in many organisations and so this programme does not limit you to a specific industry although the transport industry will always be one of the larger employment destinations. Globalisation and technical developments mean the field is rapidly developing and requiring new skills. PRE-REQUISITE: Normally RESM6.01 and at least 30 credits at level 7. The specific prerequisites required will depend on the topic proposed and must be approved by the Programme Coordinator. Each Project must be approved by the Programme Coordinator, proposed Academic Supervisor, and Head of the School of Business. 30 7 MGMT7.01 Strategic Management To enable students to analyse, evaluate and synthesise the critical aspects of strategic management and to be able to integrate its various aspects into a form which can be implemented and controlled. PRE-REQUISITE: Relevant knowledge, skills and experience in the business field. 15 7 MGMT7.04 Strategic Operations Management To provide a treatment of operations strategy which is clear, well-structured and interesting. To develop an understanding of the principles which underpin operations strategy and to apply these principles to a variety of businesses and organisations, providing a logical path through the key activities and decisions of operations strategy and the way in which operations strategies are put together in practice. COURSE BRIEF DESCRIPTION CREDIT VALUE NZQA LEVEL WSC5.04 Grape and Wine Production To provide an overview of the historical development of grape and wine production in New Zealand and around the world. Students are introduced to winemaking principles and basic winemaking processes involved in the production of major wine types. Grape vine physiology, anatomy and annual growth cycle are examined, particularly with regard to fruit development and ripening. This course also covers the identification of grapevine cultivars and the use of hybrids and rootstocks. It will include legislation of relevance to the wine business, such as the Wine Act 2003, the Sale of Liquor Act, New Zealand (Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code) Food Standards 2002, Wine Standards Management Programmes and Hazard Analysis, Critical Control Point methodology, wine export regulations and procedures, and Customs procedures and requirements. An understanding of relevant local body regulations and parts of the Resource Management Act will also have been gained. Students will also have an understanding of export procedures, as well as the structure of the New Zealand market, and relevant overseas markets.
