3. INTRODUCTION:
OPTOMETRY, the term coming from a Greek word "opsis- view" and
"metron- something used to measure or rule". The word 'OPTO' is shortened
form derived from a Greek word ophthalmos meaning 'EYE'.
OPTOMETRISTS are the health care professionals who provide the
primary healthcare through the comprehensive eye examinations. They
evaluate the visual system, its defects and abnormalities as well as
correction of refractive errors by the means of glasses, contact lenses etc.
and helps in the treatment of different eye disease.
4. ROLES OF OPTOMETRISTS:
As mentioned above, optometry is a healthcare profession and optometrists are the
health care practitioner (registered/licensed) who provide comprehensive eye and vision
care by correcting the refractive errors through the help of lenses, detection and diagnosis
of the eye disease and its management.
They also help in identifying if any systemic disease has harmed eye like in case of long
term diabetes or hypertension.
5. ROLES:
1. Healthy eyes cases : aid in case of myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia and
binocular vision.
2. Eye diseases: with the help of topical agents.
3. Systemic diseases with ocular manifestations: DM, HTN, Thyroid etc.
4. Providing pre and post operative care: cataract, retinal surgery, laser,
refractive surgery etc.
