4. INTRODUCTION TO
GYROSCOPE
A GYROSCOPE is a device used for measuring
or maintaining orientation and angular velocity.
It is a spinning wheel or disc in which the axis of
rotation (spin axis) is free to assume any
orientation by itself.
5. HISTORY OF GYROSCOPES
Johann Bohnenberger created
the first know gyroscope , calling
it “Machine”.
1817
Pierre-Simon Laplace
Recommended the “Machine” be
used as a teaching aide.
1820
Leon Foucault Coins the name
“Gyroscope” when he uses
Bohnenberger’s “Machine” in an
experiment involving the earths
rotation.
1852
The first Gyroscope for Marine
navigation was developed by
German inventor Hermann
Anschutz – Kaempfe.
1905–1908
The “Chandler Gyroscope” toy was
invented by the Chandler
Company in Indiana. It is still
considered a classic American Toy
1917
6. HISTORY OF GYROSCOPES
During World war II , The Gyroscope became
the prime component for Aircraft and Anti-
Aircraft gun sights
1939–1945
Charles Stark Draper Laboratory
demonstrated one of the MEMS or
“Vibratory” gyroscopes fabricated in silicon
1991
7. TYPES OF GYROSCOPES
Spinning Mass Gyroscope :-
Mass spins steadily within the gyro with
free movables axis (Gimbals)
8. TYPES OF GYROSCOPES
Optical Gyroscope :-
Laser rays reflect many times within an
enclosure , any changes in orientation
will be registered as changes between
the moment of the laser emittance to
eventual reception
9. TYPES OF GYROSCOPES
Vibrating Gyroscope :-
Determines rate of turn by a vibrating
resonator and its change in vibration
from the original vibrating directions.
10. APPLICATIONS OF
GYROSCOPES
In Aeronautics And Aviation :-
Used in Remote Control Flying Devices ,
Helicopters , Hovercraft , Planes etc. They
rely on Gyroscopes to prevent them from
flipping or going into a spin
11. APPLICATIONS OF
GYROSCOPES
In Naval Field :-
Gyroscope are usually used in ships to
maintain stability as the effect of
Gyroscope couple is on :-
1.) Steering
2.) Pitching
3.) Rolling
12. APPLICATIONS OF
GYROSCOPES
In Automobiles :-
Gyroscope is used in racing car because the car
engines of this type of cars act as a big
Gyroscope. Because of the Gyroscopic Forces
From the engine depending on whether the
engine is spinning clockwise or anti-clockwise
the cars nose will be forced up or down
