INSTITUTE FEATURES
3. 54 FOCUS SEPTEMBER2017
Nicolas Miller and Jean-Rene Badrick speak to Focus about CILT’s mentoring service, an initiative that
has been developed to support members in their CPD activities.
entor Nicolas Miller (NM), EU
Logistics Network Development
Controller, is responsible for the
implementation of complex best practice
supply chain solutions for the European
Logistics and Supply Chain Network.
This consists of 35 storage and production
sites delivering to over 1,500 sites.
He originally joined the Institute as part
of his personal development in raising
perceptions and profile within the
profession.
Protégé Jean-Rene Badrick (JB) has been
a Logistics Specialist in the RAF for five
years. He has experience of managing
operations in the UK, Afghanistan and
Cyprus. Prior to joining the RAF, he was
an elite athlete with GB Judo. He joined
the Institute for the wide range of training
and development programmes.
Why did you join the mentor
programme?
NM: I have a passion for people
management, and enjoy helping
individuals develop. I do not have any
direct reports in my current day-to-day
role and I miss the line manager function.
However, I do offer mentoring within my
company, and I felt the CILT programme
would be something I could enjoy and
add value to.
JB: I enrolled on the mentor scheme as I
am due to be leaving the RAF by next year
and felt I needed support to make this
transition as smooth as possible. I believed
a mentor could help in areas such as
potential work experience, CV tips, advice
on sought-after qualifications and general
advice. So far, Nic has successfully
arranged several weeks work experience
for me at Tate & Lyle Sugars, given me
extensive advice on my CV and on what
qualifications would serve me best.
Why did you choose each other as your
mentor/protégé?
NM: Jean-Rene’s background as an elite
athlete and in aviation coupled with
qualifications he had already obtained,
such as in lean, made the decision easy.
It was clear here was someone who
wanted to learn, develop and progress.
To be honest, I wasn’t sure how much
value I could provide! My gut feeling was
correct. Jean-Rene has been an equal
partner in this relationship. He has
impressed me with his attitude and
maturity in evaluating my advice.
JB: I chose Nic as it was apparent he had
vast experience in the logistics sector,
currently working for a renowned
company in Tate & Lyle Sugars. He had
also taken up a similar mentor role
previously within the company, so I felt
he was well equipped for this role.
What did you hope to get out of the
scheme and have your expectations
been met?
NM: I have really enjoyed the experience
and getting to know Jean-Rene. It has
ticked my box of helping the future of the
profession develop. There’s also been a
fair bit of consoling Jean-Rene during
Arsenal’s recent poor run.
JB: Nic has been extremely helpful and
approachable from the start, while also
being professional. He has helped me on a
range of issues, not just the specific ones I
made clear at the beginning. This includes
advice on buying my first home to finding
weekend work as a door supervisor. The
relationship has grown over time and we
have a common interest in football, which
involves a lot of consoling on my part, as
Nic is unfortunately an Ipswich Town
supporter.
Would you recommend the scheme?
NM: For likeminded people, definitely.
JB: I would strongly recommend anyone
who is considering enrolling on this
scheme to do so. Apart from the
professional aspect, it has been great to
meet someone in a similar field and build
a relationship. I have gained much more
from this than I had anticipated.
What is the key learning you can take
from this relationship?
Both: Make yourself available, listen and
enjoy.
