Clinical features
• Drinking in larger amounts, inability to cut down,
cravings
• Drinking in hazardous situations, failure to fulfill role
obligations, continued drinking despite health/
psychological/ interpersonal problems
• Evidence of tolerance & withdrawal
Psychosocial
treatment
• Motivational interviewing
• Cognitive-behavioral therapy
• Residential treatment/rehabilitation
• Mutual help groups (eg, Alcoholics Anonymous)
Pharmacotherapy
• Naltrexone
• Acamprosate (preferred in patients with liver disease or
opioid use)
• Disulfiram is second-line therapy in highly motivated
patients
