The face off
• The face off is used to start play after a goal or at the beginning of
a quarter when no foul was committed after the last play
• A face off can also be used in situations where it is not clear which
team should be awarded the ball

Face off set up
• Nothing can touch the ball or line
• Crosses parallel to the midline
• Crosse head straight up, not leaning
• Gloves touching the ground, wrapping the crosse
• Entire body left of the plastic

Face off procedure
• The official places the ball on the ground at the center of the field
• Players will stand on the side they are defending
• Official: “down”
• Players set up correctly
• Official: “set”
• Players can no longer move stick or hands
• Offical blows whistle
• Players may go on the whistle and battle for the ball

Illegal actions
• Not setting up correctly: technical foul
• Moving after “set”: technical foul
• Kicking or stepping on an opponent’s stick: technical foul
• Using hands or fingers to play the ball: personal foul
• Repeated technical fouls: personal foul

Wing players
• Before the whistle, wing players have to stay behind the wing line
• On the whistle they can run towards the ball
• If the ball is still in between the face off players they cannot touch
the face off players or their sticks
• If a team is man down during a face off, they have to leave a wing
open en play with one less wing player

• All other players are behind the restraining line until “possession”
or “free ball” is called by the official
• “Possession”: a player has gained possession of the ball
• “Free ball”: a loose ball crosses the restraining line
