2. DESIGN INTENT
My Design intent is to use the most reliable forms of energy and water conservation in conjunction with my site location
and interior design to create an inviting hostel that will entice people globally to choose to visit Moab and Arches
National Park. Utah’s most visited destination.
Water conservation, energy efficiency and implementing technology are important factors in the design and will
encapsulate the visitors and help them feel they are truly connected with the environment in an earth friendly way.
Interior Environment:
The interior uses a bright enlivening complementary color scheme of blue and orange to bring the energy. The interior
uses all green certified furniture that further enhances the green space of the interior. Nothing will be more
invigorating than the live plant wall that allows for a clean breathable and cool environment utilizing recycled
rainwater to cool the interior naturally. This product is a Versa Wall by Gsky.
Energy and water Consumption:
Solar Energy will be harvested on the roof of this structure to be used for lighting, electricity, and other necessary uses.
The interior will use recycled or recyclable materials in furnishings and will also provide a high quality for the users.
Energy usage will be reduced by locating the structure with the natural environment to enhance quality of heat
exchange, and sunlight effectively.
Low flow water systems are used in kitchen, bathroom, and shower areas, in addition to the Xeriscaping of the landscape.
Location:
The location of the site is close to amenities, within the city of Moab Ut, Since the site is near many outdoor activities such
as hiking, biking, photography, and National sites, this will be an enticing location.
Space:
Finish selection materials allow for easy cleaning and low maintenance, and can withstand high traffic and use. Rooms
included in the space include main lounge, computer area, reception, kitchen, dining, outdoor dining, bathrooms,
bedrooms, recreation area, and media lounge. This hostel will provide a warm and collaborative environment for
people to sleep, visit, cook, and eat or have private time.
3. SITE LOCATION: 776 KANE CREEK BLVD MOAB UT
The Hostel is located only 5 minutes from town- easily within walking distance to a gas station, restaurant or
Convenience store. It is also very close to a variety of mountain biking trails, the Colorado river for rafting,
Jeep Safaris, and of course Utah’s famous Arches National Park. It would be easy to bike to any location in
town for dinner or stay at the hostel for dinner and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

5. USERS
This hostel is targeted towards small tourist groups that are interested in staying in a nice facility
that is located near a variety of outdoor activities that Moab and National parks have to offer.
Tenants may be large families or groups that can rent the entire facility, or single individuals
that will pay for the use of the bed and facility luxuries.
The Moab Lounge has a 16 person capacity, and has male and female dormitories. Because this
is geared towards the outdoor lovers, it is specified to feel comfortable like the outdoors and
also can withstand many different types of traffic (ex: bikes, hiking shoes, equipment storage
etc.).
The first floor takes care of the weary traveler with a large lounge area and relaxing plant wall. It
also helps the outdoorsman plan their day with maps, computer and printing access for tours
and agenda planning- accomplished at the reception desk or the computer stations. If you
can’t get enough of the outdoors, there is also a dining area that is shaded on the back deck,
located right next to the kitchen and inside dining area.
Relaxing can also be done on the second floor in the ping pong area, or the media lounge on the
third floor with plenty of outlets and seats near the T.V. We want to make sure you feel
comfortable so bathrooms with showers are located right off the bedroom area. Also lockers
are provided for paying customers to store their items in the bedroom.
21. BAMBOO WALL- 3FORM
Dark bamboo rings are incorporated in a resin installed for the accenting wall behind the stairs. This 3/8”
gauge resin is a durable wall finish that can stand up to equipment being carried up the stairs, but it is also
sustainable. This comes from Nepal and is part of the Full Circle program by 3form. It is made from naturally
sustainable and rapidly renewable dark colored bamboo.
22. GSKY PLANT WALL
Gsky is the leading manufacturer in live plant wall
systems. The purpose of using this system in the
Moab Hostel is to provide a living, breathing
natural and healthy environment in the main
living space. It provides fresh air for the space by
removing toxins and dust from the air. This is
especially nice because of Moab’s naturally
desert like climate. The benefit of using this
automatic system is the plants take in only as
much water as needed, with little maintenance
and no dripping mess and no need to remember
to water the plants.
Plants used: Native to Moab Green leaves with a
beautiful flower- which comes in a purple variety
and yellow variety.

24. PAINT COLORS
Finishes selected were chosen based on Green Qualifications, Durability, and Aesthetic. Oceanside and Serape
will be used throughout as accenting colors and way finding, and Arcade white is the trim color and for ceilings.
Paint was also selected with Sherwin Williams to provide an Eco Friendly and sustainable paint choice. Emerald
is an acrylic paint base that contributes to LEED Certification.
26. CONCRETE FLOORING
Stained Concrete with Epoxy Coating
Color: Butte Red
Concrete was selected for it’s
naturally cool temperature to help
keep the interior cool, also, it’s low
maintenance qualities, and beautiful
finish. It is able to withstand and
hide the red rock surrounding dirt,
and hold up to bikes rolling across
many times if necessary.
The concrete is finished with a
sustainable epoxy coating to add to
the green qualities of the interior.
27. LIGHTING
Lighting was selected with Energy Efficiency in Mind:
LED Lighting is used for the majority of the lighting in ceiling cans.
Energy Star Certified lighting is used in Bathrooms.
Accent Lighting is manufactured by Zuo Modern, and also uses LED lighting and recycled concrete for the covering.

Initiative. Their focus is making sure
they are keeping their environmental
concerns at the top of the list.
29. ARTWORK OF TOM TILL
Local Moab Resident of 40 Years, Tom Till is a lover of Utah and it shows in his photography. He has
won many awards for his work, it would only be appropriate to use a local artist for the artwork in
this Hostel.
30. FURNITURE
• Storage is essential to this hostel, lockers will provide security sense for the users
as they need them and are located in the bedrooms. Locks will be charged at an
extra cost and can be purchased at the reception desk.
• The Denizen storage is specified in bedrooms with locking feature to secure
personal belongings.
• Bike storage optional feature, located outside near back patio.
• Ping Pong Tables for recreation
• Seating is selected for green certification made of all natural materials, and for
comfort and high use.
• Beds are fold up high tech bunk beds with storage above, fold down to only 4” of
space if needed.
• Furniture used: elbow chair, wishbone chair, calm table, denizen lockers, Visalia
Lounge chair and 3 Seater, Lollisoft bunk bed.
