1. Site Observation & Analysis
1.1 Site Observation
The location that we have chosen is an abandoned empty land which is just in front of Sungai
Kuyoh. Our site is located at Jalan Raya 5, Taman Serdang Jaya, 43300 Seri Kembangan. This
land has been abandoned for years without any purposes and is barely surrounded by bushes and
woody trees. This empty land is approximately 40m x 35m and we found that there are not much
functional shop lots which provide beneficial services for citizens. In additional, there are several
residential areas located just opposite of our site and there is a primary school which is about 0.5
km away from this empty land. Some commercial shops like 7-Eleven, stationery stores as well as
some recreational and sports centre should be built within this area in order to provide a good
quality of life for citizens. Hence, we decided to choose this site for this project as it has a high
potential to become a successful recreational spot with convenient store for all the nearby
residences.

Our Site
1.2 Site Analysis
WIND DIRECTION
The wind blows from southwest and it’s strong.
CAR CIRCULATION
Cars are allowed to enter and exit our site through the entrance. Drivers are also allowed to park
their vehicles in our site as the space is big enough to accommodate a numbers of cars.
SUNLIGHT
The open space is not covered by roof and it’s open air, hence, our site is always lighten up by
sunlight.
HUMAN CIRCULATION
Human circulation in our site is rare as this open space is abandoned.
!2
Our Site
VIEW 1
-The vegetations and plants are overgrown and untrimmed. Reducing the aesthetic of the open
space.
VIEW 2
+Overall view of the residential area and pedestrian pathway can be seen and hence, creating a
safer place for public.
!3
VIEW 3
-The view is poor as the river is critically polluted and dirty. Reducing the aesthetic of the space.
2. Concept
I’ve decided to purpose a recreational building as there is no any recreational spots with
convenience stores around our site. People around our site do not have a specific place to perform
recreational activities and are forced to take different means of transportation to travel to another
places even though they just want to buy a drink . Hence, the 2 storeys recreational building that
I’ve purposed includes
• indoor and outdoor recreational/rest area
• convenience stores (7-Eleven, 99 Speedmart)
!4
2.1 Design & Inspiration
It is not a new thing that shipping containers are
being used for other purposes besides
containing goods for shipping. Over here, it is
common to see shipping containers being used
as site offices at construction sites - affix an air
conditioning unit, furnish it with relevant office
furniture, and you are ready for business.
I’ve decided to use these containers to complete
this project as they are stylish and edgy, which
bring up the aesthetic of this area.
These container comes with different sizes, colours, as
well as the arrangement. Besides radiating the
message of using recyclable material, the physical
structure is also space and cost saving.
!5
CONVENIENCE STORES + CONTAINERS = ?
So what will happen if the containers are being stacked up to a 2 storeys building and combined
with convenience shops such as 7-Eleven?
WHAT IS A CONVENIENCE STORE?
A convenience store, small grocery store,
or corner shop, is a small store that stocks
a range of everyday items such as
groceries, snack foods, candy, toiletries,
soft drinks, tobacco products, and
newspapers. Such stores may also offer
money order and wire transfer services. In
some jurisdictions, corner stores are
licensed to sell alcohol, typically beer and
wine.
They differ from general stores and village
shops in that they are not in a rural location
and are used as a convenient supplement
to larger stores.
People nowadays seldom go to wet market as it’s crowded and dirty, so, they choose to purchase
their groceries in convenience stores instead of wet markets just for some drinks or snacks.
WHEN IT COMBINES WITH CONTAINER
These recyclable shipping containers provide a box-like geometric space for different activities.
People will find it interesting once they walked in as the concept of “container stores” can be seen
rarely nowadays.
!6
INDOOR RECREATIONAL AREAS + CONTAINERS = ?
WHAT IS RECREATIONAL AREA?
Recreation is an essential part of human
life and finds many different forms which
are shaped naturally by individual
interests but also by the surrounding
social construction.
Indoor recreation rooms are normally
centered around some form of
entertainment, typically an audio/video
setup. This can consist of something as
elaborate as a projection screen with
surround sound or something as simple
as a base model television.
Tabletop games are frequent in recreation rooms. In addition to games played on a normal table,
recreation rooms sometimes include custom game tables for table tennis (ping pong), table football
(Foosball), Table shuffleboard, Pinball, air hockey, or billiards (pool). Other games can include dart
boards and arcade games.

4. Main Idea
Convenience Store (First Floor)
• Self service coin laundry
This is how “self service coin laundry” looks like. Not all
people can afford a washing machine, hence, in order to
provide a convenient laundry service, there are 4 washing
machines which are functional for laundry jobs in the
convenience store.
Literally the tables and seats of the seating area will look like
this. People can enjoy their food or beverage while waiting
the laundry to be done.
Water dispenser which serves both hot and cold water is
extremely important as most of the instant food nowadays
need hot water to be prepared. And the same goes to the
cold water, people need cold water to chill themselves
during hot days. The water provided is free of charge.
!14
Recreational Area (Second Floor)
The chairs of the outdoor seating area will be like this, made from recycled oil drum and the tables
are made from recycled pallets. Both chair and tables are made from recycled and recyclable
materials. These saves the cost and provide a cozy place for people to chill out. Patio umbrellas
are also installed to prevent sun and rain.
Bushes and shrubs will be functioned as fences. The lush of
greeneries make the environment more aesthetic.
Bean bags have become a globally recognised piece of
furniture. Hence, bean bags are chosen to be put at indoor
seating areas. These bean bags can be moved according to
people themselves. People can enjoy and perform their leisure
activities on the bean bags.
!15
The entertainment area provide different types of indoor mini games, including air hockey, table
soccer, snooker as well as electronic darts game. Things like electricity charging sockets, board
games for rent, various type of magazine and most importantly, free Wi-Fi are provided.
Except for the interior of the container itself, there will be outdoor seating area too. The outdoor of
the container building will be like this:
Since there is a river (Sg. Kuyoh) behind our
site, I’ve decided to import the river water in
after filtering the gray water from the river
itself. It’s cost-saving and eco-friendly.
There will be wooden decking on the water
and outdoor seatings are provided.
!16
5. Benefits & Impacts
5.1 Benefits
•Boost up the economic growth of this area.
•Brings convenient to the people around this area.
•People could have found a place for recreational activities.
•Provides a cozy environment for people to rest and relax.
!17
5.2 Impacts
•Causes traffic congestion as the road in front of our site is narrow. In
addition, there is no parking space provided within this area.
•Rate of pollution may increase as there are always some
irresponsible humans who like to litter.
•The opposite residences will be affected by noises.
•Safety of the area may be decreased as the robbery cases always
happen nowadays, especially for the commercial shops.
•Student may play truant in the recreational area.

  • 6. CONVENIENCE STORES + CONTAINERS = ? So what will happen if the containers are being stacked up to a 2 storeys building and combined with convenience shops such as 7-Eleven? WHAT IS A CONVENIENCE STORE? A convenience store, small grocery store, or corner shop, is a small store that stocks a range of everyday items such as groceries, snack foods, candy, toiletries, soft drinks, tobacco products, and newspapers. Such stores may also offer money order and wire transfer services. In some jurisdictions, corner stores are licensed to sell alcohol, typically beer and wine. They differ from general stores and village shops in that they are not in a rural location and are used as a convenient supplement to larger stores. People nowadays seldom go to wet market as it’s crowded and dirty, so, they choose to purchase their groceries in convenience stores instead of wet markets just for some drinks or snacks.
