1. Access my Gallery
Give others the liberty to access your gallery but on your terms

2. What is the ‘Gallery’ Story?
E=mc^2
Eh..
Smart
Phone
Overloaded
and confused
gallery, I am
clueless
Yes.. And I
promise to
get better
Hey Gallery..
Can you
sort, edit,
manage?
What more
can I do to
delight you
Fundamentally, mobile refers to a user and not the device or the application
3. Vineeta is a full time designer whose work demands her to
be observant and learn from her surroundings. Travelling
and hanging out with a close set of friends is something she
looks forward to. She likes to invest in gadgets as she feels
it makes her life simple. She recently got a smart phone
which will cater to her needs of photography, good memory
space and editing features
Drives: Quick access, Data management, new functions
like edit etc
Blocks: Search, share
Persona 1
“ Sharing and transferring photos
is the WORST TASK BY FAR on
my phone ”
Vineeta Rath- The capturer
30, Designer, Consultant
Delhi, Johannesburg
Smart Phone expert user
4. Salim Bhai- The Ladies Man
40, Tailor and Designer
Mumbai
Somewhat Expert User of Smart Phones
Salim Bhai has a small fashion boutique in a
commercial area in Mumbai. He is well known for his
designs and good stitching quality. He wants to grow
his business and reach out to more customers. Unlike
before now Salim shows and shares his designs on
his phone but often gets stuck on finding the right
design as each customer has their own needs.
Drives: Quick access, memory space
Blocks: Edit, Share, lack of knowledge on new
features, data management
“ My gallery is my catalogue,
and in future I would like to use it
as a place where my customers
can access it, like a website”
Persona 2
5. Reviewing and Comparing Samsung Gallery
The review will be based on primary functions (Browsing, Viewing, searching and Sharing) on parameters
of Interaction, content and presentation
6. Home Screen- Directing the User
Too many albums with no separation,
indication, container hence
Decision making causes mental load on a
user
Potential for user confusion
as the album names is composed of
Alphabhat+ Special character+
Number leading to Visual clutter
No clear Indication of Source of Photograph-
The users mental model looks for the source of
Photograph as per conventional gallery apps.
“I still prefer the very tight,
neat display of my previous
phone, the lumia 800 “
Samsung note 4 user
7. Sort and Search
The search option looks like a global search
but is just a suggestive search box.
Multiple level sorting shows its result above
the search options. The proximity and order of
selected gives an indication of all of them
being filter options
“The search gives an impression as if I can
type anything and it will show results“
Samsung note 4 user
The search in Photos gallery
of Nexus 5 gives results on
any related keywords
8. Reviewing and Comparing Samsung Gallery- Select and Share
Whatsapp, Facebook and
gmail are the most common
form of sharing which should be
by default the first choices for
sharing.
Numerous sharing options:
Multiple options to share pictures
but it would be good to know how
many of these are used at all.
“These are the only choices I
Phone has when it comes to
sharing, I can print though
(Sarcasm)”
I phone user
9. Interaction style and Presentation
Inconsistent interaction style- swiping
Horizontal and vertical scroll
As per the user- Location and face sort
has horizontal swipe and rest is
vertical scroll.
Lack of anchoring points, the Video
icon takes up much of the users
attention
“ In I Phone all the pictures, clicked
from the phone and received from
others in the same container, In a way
its good if all you do is browse, but to
search a picture is a difficult task
10. CONTENT AND INFORMATION
CLARITY:
Terms like studio, Photo studio
and Shot and more is not as per
users mental model who
understand these options more in
terms of edit
Content
The pencil icon is a universal edit
icon found in facebook, linkedin,
photo editing apps etc. hence the
user easily associates it with
editing
11. Current delighter moment of Gallery App- Data Management and Organization
The new apps can organize your pictures based
on face recognition, places, things, location etc.
Multiple filters at one go can help gallery have a
global search
This Opens a lot of future possibilities
for the gallery App, especially the we access and share our photographs
Samsung being an android phone, by default has another
gallery app called Google Photos, is the user expected to
learn two styles of accessing there gallery?
Challenge!
12. Komal, Vineeta and Saranya have gone out on a five day trip to Leh.

take with multiple photos-
The auto suggest pop -up saves user
from the action for pressing ‘+’ icon.
21. Komal and Saranya wants to make sure after every click they get to see the picture.
The ‘ Dikhao Dikhao (Show me the picture right now) is something that really annoys Vineeta. It takes up too much of her time to
begin with, her phone battery and whole browsing activity in middle of capturing it.
Scenario 2: The ‘Click’ that causes Hysteria
22. Work in Progress
Hey Gallery…Is there a way?
the minute I click the picture, it
is shown on my friends phone
