Dictionary meaning – give formal advise, give
professional help and advise to resolve problems
Interview – Conversation with a purpose.
Counselling – is a form of interview but not
sermonizing or advising.
• Is a process of helping the counsellee to help
himself to resolve his problems.
(b) Aim – to build up self reliance of counsellee.
(c) Pre-requisite – deep interest in development of
subordinate
INTEREST IN DEVELOPMENT OF
SUBORDINATE ENTAILS
(a) Understanding background, personality,
knowledge and skills.
(b) Understanding environment in which he operates
(c) Understanding problems and issues faced by him
(d) Understanding his potential
(e) Belief that development of subordinate helps
development of organisation
(f) Belief that mutual respect is conducive for
counselling.
SITUATIONS DEMANDING
COUNSELLING: FOR A PERSON
(a) Being in debt, taking to drinking or has become
apathetic to job.
(b) Discordance with wife or family members.
(c) Fallen out with his group – social boycot
COUNSELLING CAN BE CONDUCTED

(a) Ascertaining career ambitions
(b) Determining training and development needs
(c) Explaining denied privileges
(d) As feedback on performance
