Reflecting on My First Teaching Practicum Experience

I believe that there are several aims involving this kind of experience; it
provides opportunities to observe, to participate and to practice in real
situations in order to apply the skills and knowledge that the trainees they
have acquired during their course of studies careers. Moreover, the
practicum offers to the teacher trainees students the maturity and
confidence in their professional lives and to facilitate the application of the
knowledge acquired during the previous years.
According to my personal experience, I think that the practicum in
kindergarten was a challenge for me. I have never taught English to young
learners at a school, I only worked with them at a workshop for some
months but I knew that this particular experience would be quite different.
My personal goals for this particular experience were to be able to
connect the knowledge of didactics, literature, among others learnt during
the course of studies carer to the practicum itself, to discover my own
development and the most important one, to learn. I believe that in this kind
of profession we never stop learning so it was very interesting to observe
other teachers’ classes and to be observed by the tutor who provides a very
useful feedback. I believe that this has helped me because the tutor
provided me with several strategies that I was not aware of, like checking ss’
comprehension about the tasks, motivate them to say full sentences, how to
use visual aids (their size and colour), how to use videos.
Additionally, I think that I have learnt a lot I learnt how to work with
little children who have a short memory span, and how saying rhymes or
singing songs can help to organize them and this allows ss to have the
opportunity to move (they love it to move around) because I had the
opportunity to reflect on my own development and I could notice what

2. connections of the different activities; reflect more on the possible
problem that I may face; I have to work on in order to improve and to be a
better teacher. Furthermore, in my opinion the most interesting activity was
watching the video of my class to write a self-assessment report. The fact
that I had to judge my own class was quite challenging. Because, I had an
idea about how my class was and when I saw the video I could observe
“another version” of my own class. I noticed that maybe the first activity
(where they had to dance and they have to be as statues when I stopped the
song and I asked them some questions about the flashcards) was too long,
because then ss started to move around and almost all of them were not
paying attention to the task.
However, if I had the chance to develop this experience again I would
try to enjoy it more. I feel that working at three schools, studying other
tough subjects and with all the personal changes that I have gone through
had this year have made this experience a hard one but things are never
easy. Furthermore, I believe that this experience affected affect my future
pedagogical decisions since I realized that we need to take a lot of aspects
into account to have a successful class. For example, before I started the
practicum I never thought about the possible problems that I may face in
class and to be prepared for any situation is very important. , students’
characteristics according to their age; memory span; that each class the
teacher should review vocabulary/structures and teach new ones; the
seating arrangement; This experience also have had influenced my future
goals involving the fact that I want to be a better teacher but I did not
know that I have to improve in aspects that I was not aware of. Like taking
into account the aspects that I mentioned above
In conclusion, I feel that I have made a practicum in kindergarten
because I have learnt a lot. As it is stated above, I had the opportunity to
observe other teacher classes and they were excellent. I really liked like how
she handles handled the group, the activities that she planned and how
comfortable she was with her students, and they were with her too. In
addition, I believe that this challenging challenge experience had have
offered me a lot to think about what I should do in order in order of what
should I do to improve and to realize that it does not matter if sometimes is

3. difficult or hard, I would have chosen this profession one more time. The
opportunity to connect with students, the experience of meeting them
outside the classroom and the most important thing is that they show
themselves happy to see you, this is huge.
