2. • A setting is the place or type of surroundings where something is positioned or where an event
takes place. For a film, the setting can be more diverse, taking into account the time period,
climate, landscape and people. It assesses a range of factors which create that, ‘place’. The setting is
very important for a film as it sets the mood and supports the genre of the film. Combined, the
setting leads to different emotions being expressed, usually to accompany the mood largely
created by the setting. It is important for all of the components of the setting to be accounted for,
in order to create the intended mood and atmosphere. Often, the setting can reflect the character’s
emotions and feelings.
3. • Thrillers repeatedly use similar
components of thrillers in order to
manipulate and create different
moods throughout the film. A
component, prevalent in the setting
of thriller films, is darker lighting. It
is often very grey and cloudy, with a
duller atmosphere. The dim light
creates tension, which is needed in a
thriller, as it adds a sense of
uncertainty, as you cannot see every
detail of the scene.
4. • The location of thrillers can vary
depending on the protagonists. As
my trailer will be for a teen thriller,
the setting would be in a relatable
environment for teenagers such as
a school. Teen films are usually set
in areas where teens socialise such
as school, parks or shopping
centres. This makes the trailer more
personal for the target audience as
they experience these
environments nearly every day.
These settings are beneficial to the
film as they are areas where there
is a wide range of personalities,
emotions and moods.
