What is Mobile Computing
-> Mobile Computing is a
technology that allows
transmission of data,
voice and video via a
computer or any other
wireless enabled device
without having to be
connected to a fixed
physical link.
What is Mobility
 A device that moves -
- Between different
geographical
locations,
- Between different
networks
- Between different
applications
Mobile Computing Devices
PDA
Laptops
Cell Phone
Sensors
Pagers
Applications of Mobile Computing
 For Estate Agents
 In companies
 Stock Information
Collection/Control
 Credit CardVerification
 Transportation
Industries
 Electronic Mail/Paging
Advantage / Disadvantage
Advantages of Mobile Computing
 Increase in Productivity - Mobile devices can be used out in the field of
various companies, therefore reducing the time and cost for clients and themselves.
 Entertainment - Mobile devices can be used for entertainment purposes, for personal
and even for presentations to people and clients.
 Portability - this would be one of the main advantages of mobile computing, you are not
restricted to one location in order for you to get jobs done or even access email on the go
 Cloud Computing - This service is available for saving documents on a online server and being
able to access them anytime and anywhere when you have a connection to the internet and can access these files on several
mobile devices or even PCs at home
Disadvantages of Mobile Computing
 Insufficient Bandwidth - If the user needs access to a network
they must resort to slow wirelessWAN systems primarily intended for telephone
use
 Security Standards - When working mobile one is dependent on
public networks, requiring careful use ofVPNs.
 Power Consumption - Mobile computers must rely entirely on
battery power. Combined with compact size, this means unusually expensive
batteries be used
 Transmission Interfaces - Weather and terrain problems as well
as distance-limited connection exist with some technologies. Reception in
tunnels and some buildings is poor
Conclusion
 Mobile Computing has Severe Limitations
-however, it is far from impossible, and
technology improves all the time
 Lots Of Challenges
- Some have (good) solutions, many others are
still waiting to be solved
