3. Health Data Portal
Simple, reliable, sustainable and streamlined
reporting mechanism for Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander health reporting through the
Health Data Portal.
4. Key Features of the Health Data Portal:
1. Automatic Data Validation
• Empowers health services by providing near-
instant feedback on their data, using the
AIHW’s validation rules
• Allows health services to adjust their data or
provide commentary in response to validation
flags
• Improves the quality and completeness of
data reaching the AIHW, and speeds up
finalisation of data
• Expected to reduce the number of exception
reports for health services
5. Key Features of the Health Data Portal:
2. Data Analytics QLIK Dashboard:
• Graphically displays health service data
near-instantly after transmission to the
Portal
• Shows results for each nKPI back to
December 2014, compared to national
and state averages and Implementation
Plan trajectories
• Enables health services to filter their
data by one or multiple criteria, with
graphs re-drawn instantly
• Health services are able to share their
QLIK dashboard with their affiliate or
any other partnering organisations
7. Health Data Portal Co-Design Approach and Principles
We used a co design approach to developing the Portal to
help ensure that the Indigenous health sector and the AIHW
were able to be involved in the Portal’s feature definition,
prototyping and user testing processes from the outset.
Our aim has always been to continue doing what is working
well, improve what is not working well, and streamline and
simplify where possible.
8. Co-designing the Portal
June 2017 - April 2018, over 210 health service,
sector support, software vendor, AIHW, state
government and Department of Health grant
management representatives attended 12 co-
design workshops conducted every 2-3 months in
every capital city.
One-on-one co-design sessions were also
conducted with health services in Melbourne and
Sydney.
Many participants travelled long distances,
including interstate, to attend.
Many participants also attended multiple
workshops and provided positive feedback
regarding former co-design input being reflected
in new iterations of the Portal.
9. Co-design Webinars
Co-design workshops were followed by a webinar
series, which allowed the same information that
was covered at the co-design workshops to be
viewed.
To date approximately 250 Health Service
representatives attended a scheduled Portal
webinar session with many more accessing a copy
of the webinar through “Webinar on Demand” at a
later date.
The webinars ensured that those who were not able
to attend a co-design workshop were still able to be
involved in the co-design process.
10. Trial of the Portal: July 2018 (30 June 2018
nKPI data collection)
11. Was conducted in July 2018 for the 30 June
nKPI data collection with 45 health services
participating on a voluntary basis.
Was successful with the majority of feedback
was very positive.
Data was loaded into both OCHREStreams
and the Portal and went through the reporting
process in both systems.
Gave Health Services an early opportunity to
see their nKPI data since December 2014 in
the QLIK Dashboard.
Provided Health Services with the opportunity
to see the end to end process before the
Portal takes over in December 2018.
“I really liked
the fact you can
update the cells
in the nKPI
form”
“I love the nKPI form...
The form did not time out
as quickly…I used to lose
my data.”
“The
validation
comments
made it a lot
easier to fix
data”

Working with NACCHO to ensure ALL health
services are ready to use the Portal for the
December 2018 nKPI data collection.
159 out of 241 health services that report
on nKPIs have at least one staff
member registered with the Portal.
82 health services still need to register with
the Portal. Is yours one of these?
15. Information and Learning Sessions
November – December 2018
Our trainers, Joel and Stuart, commence
sessions on 2 November 2018 in Alice
Springs and finish on 10 December 2018
in Canberra.
The sessions will help all health services
prepare to use the Portal for the December
2018 nKPI data collection.
The sessions will provide the opportunity
for you to ask questions, familiarise
yourself with changes made to the Portal,
and the QLIK Dashboard, since the July
2018 trial, as well as clarify aspects of the
Portal that may be challenging to your
organisation.
