For many girls in Tanzania and other parts of Africa, menstruation can impede education. Going to school during your period with no sanitary protection, no or inadequate toilet facilities while enduring teasing and the shame of menstrual stimga is a reality for many young girls and it puts them off attending classes. They feel vulnerable and uncomfortable and opt to stay at home. Jambo Bukoba in Munich and its partner organisation in Tanzania, Jambo For Development, undertake several initiatives to help girls stay comfortably in school during menstruation. This includes: -the provision of sanitary protection -the building of toilets at schools -the construction of Menstural Hygiene Management rooms at schools as private spaces for girls -the running of educational Menstrual Hygiene Managment courses for both boys and girls Through these measures, Jambo Bukoba has had a positive impact on schooling for more than 5,000 girls.
