Edexcel defines the grades for the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) as an 8-point scale from A* to G. GCSE Double Awards cover two subject courses and are reported on a 15-point scale. GCSE Short Courses cover half the content of a full course and are graded on the 8-point scale. Symbols are used to indicate parts of exams a candidate was absent from or exempt from. A Qualification Accreditation Number is provided where specifications are approved by regulators. Certificates remain the property of Edexcel and altering them would be invalid.
2. General Certificate of Secondary Education
Definition of Grades
The results of the CCSE examinations are reported on an 8-point scale of grades;A*(a*),n(a), a(b), C(c), O(d), f(e),
F(f) and C(g). Candidates who fail to reach the minimum standard for C(g) receive no grade and a subject receiving
no grade is not recorded on the certificate.
GCSE Double Awards
The CCSE Doubte Award is designed to cover the content of two futt CCSE subject courses. The results in these
specifications are reported on a '15 point scate:A*A*(a*a*), A*A(a*a), AA(aa), AA(ab), BB(bb), AC(bc), CC(cc), CO(cd),
DD(dd), DE(de), EE(ee), EF(ef), FF(ff), FC(fg), CC(gg) to indicate that the results in these specifications have the same
status as CCSE grades in two other certificate subjects. Candidates who fail to reach the minimum standard for
CC(gg) receive no grade and a subject receiving no grade is not recorded on the certificate.
cCSE (Short Course)
The Short Course is designed to cover not less than hatf the specification content of the corresponding futt CCSE
subject course.The CCSE (Short Course) is, therefore, broadty equivatent to half the corresponding futtCCSE.
The results of the Short Course are reported on the 8-point scate.
Explanation of Symbols
# The candidate was absent from part of the examination in this subject and was awarded a zero mark for this part.
The grade was awarded on the components actually taken.
+ The candidate was exempt from satisfying the futt range of assessment objectives in this subject. Details may be
obtained from Edexcet.
Qualification Accreditation Number (QAN)
A Quatification Accreditation Number is printed against a title on this certificate where the specification has been
approved by the regutators of external qualifications in England,Wales and Northern lreland.
Conditions of lssue
This certificate is and remains the property of Edexce[ at a[[ times and is issued on the fottowing conditions:
(a) any alteration to this certificate renders it invatid,
(b) this certificate must be delivered up to Edexcel on request.
Use of an altered certificate could constitute a criminal offence.
