4. Introduction
Public Sector Undertaking
• A state-owned enterprise in India is called a Public Sector
Undertaking (PSU) or a Public Sector Enterprise.
• These companies are owned by the union government of India,or one
of the many state or territorial governments, or both.
• The company stock needs to be majority-owned by the government
to be a PSU.
• PSUs may be classified as Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs),
Public Sector Banks (PSBs) or State Level Public Enterprises (SLPEs).
• CPSEs are companies in which the direct holding of the Central
Government or other CPSEs is 51% or more . They are administered
by the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises.
5. EVOLUTION OF PUBLIC SECTOR UNDERTAKINGS IN
INDIA:
During the British Rule, the presence of factories and enterprises was
conspicuous , however they were mostly built and used for vested
interests of colonialism and thus did little good to India and its people.
Post Independence due to the above as well as other factors, India was
in deep socio-economic issues. There was grave underdevelopment ,
along with disparities in income , unemployment , lack of trained
manpower and a weak industrial base and investments , unacceptable
infrastructural facilities etc.
Therefore, In order to self sustain and become self reliant the Public
Sector Undertaking blueprint was developed under Planned Economic
Development model of Socialist countries that would address all the
above problems.
7. Role of PSUs
• PSUs have laid a strong foundation for the Industrial development of
the country as it is not interested in profit making but nation
building.
• They leverage the government through major shareholding in the
Industries to intervene in the economy in a major way thus helping
in achieving the desired socio-economic objectives and long term
goals.
• They help in pushing the agricultural economy on to the progressive
pathway and rural development as well as providing basic
infrastructural facilities , educational and employment opportunities.
12. NTPC Overview
NTPC is India’s largest energy conglomerate with roots planted way back in 1975 to accelerate
power development in India. Since then it has established itself as the dominant power major
with presence in the entire value chain of the power generation business. From fossil fuels it has
forayed into generating electricity via hydro, nuclear and renewable energy sources. This foray
will play a major role in lowering its carbon footprint by reducing green house gas emissions. To
strengthen its core business, the corporation has diversified into the fields of consultancy,
power trading, training of power professionals, rural electrification, ash utilization and coal
mining as well.
NTPC became a Maharatna company in May 2010, one of the only four companies to be
awarded this status. NTPC was ranked 431st in the ‘2015, Forbes Global 2000’ ranking of the
World’s biggest companies.

15. NTPC’s Culture
According to former employee
• UpendraNath Tripathi, former Additional General Manager at National
Thermal Power Corporation (1987-2014)
I have worked in two Maharatna PSUs, NTPC and SAIL, and have several friends in other top PSUs.
From my own experience and also from friends experiences (who worked in other PSUs ) I can
definitely say that NTPC work culture is the best one. It has got “ Best place to work “ awards several
times in an international survey . As per my knowledge no PSU has got this destinct till date.
Moreover pay and perks, technology, professionalism, opportunity, and decipline are best and up to
international standards. All works /operations are performed in SAP (latest version since 11 years),
paperless transactions, transparency in official work, including promotion and transfers etc. All
these actions helps it in creating employees favourite work culture.
• Aseem Jain, works at National Thermal Power Corporation
Work culture in NTPC is very good. All level of Executives are free to share their Ideas. They start
taking routine decisions very soon after joining. People are helpful. One can submit their Ideas to e
portal and get rewarded. There is Knowledge sharing portal on Intranet of the company. There is
good hierarchy and reporting system in the company. NTPC was established long back so its most
of the system, guidelines are in place.
