3. Delivered to Karachi
A power station takes a trip
A complete 24 MW power plant had to be shipped from Colombo (Sri Lanka) to Karachi (Pakistan) recently. The firms
Logiventures and Star Shipping Line, both from the Indian Subcontinent, did the honours.
The Sri Lankan project logistics company Logiventures,
which is a part of the Hayley’s Advent corporation from
the same country, teamed up with its Karachi-based
Pakistani partner Star Shipping recently to relocate a
24MW power plant from Colombo (Sri Lanka) to Karachi
(Pakistan). The project consisted of an initial overland
leg and a subsequent maritime trip, and required
specialized skills and equipment.
For the overland route Logiventures used synchronised
hydraulic jacks to first lift and then manoeuvre the four
diesel engine generators weighing 108 t each. Over and
above this, special stools and beams were also in action
to make sure the company could handle the great
weight, which then set off on its overland leg to the port
of Colombo.
The trip from Horana, in the Kalutara district of
southwestern Sri Lanka, to the port of Colombo,
approximately 65km away, went smoothly, thanks also
to the detailed preparation that had been undertaken.
The effort also required a great degree of careful
coordination as well as the deployment of specialised
equipment, including a multi-axle trailer and a heavy-
duty puller.
The transport job covered no less than 1,300cbm. From
Colombo the shipments were forwarded to the port of Karachi
by ship. Logiventures and Star Shipping provided the full
logistics solution for the enterprise, including transportation,
vessel chartering and local customs clearance.
Part of the WCA networkStar Shipping, based in Karachi
(Pakistan), is an experienced handler of conventional,
breakbulk and oversized or overweight project cargo. The
firm also provides logistics management and supply-chain
solutions. It is a part of the WCA Projects network,
collaborating with the association’s members worldwide.
First project consignment of the year
Star Shipping reported that it had handled its first
project cargo shipment of 2015 recently,
transporting a hydrogen storage vessel to
Pakistan (see photo). It was 14.2m long, 3.8m
wide and 4.2m high. The 118t piece of equipment
was shipped on the «Venus Triumph» (9,680GRT
/ 13,006dwt). It sailed from the port of Hamriyah
(UAE) to Port Qasim (Pakistan). Star Shipping
was the designated cargohandling agent.
Star Shipping’s first project task in 2015 saw a hydrogen storage vessel shipped to Pakistan (see box).
Sophisticated transport job for
a gas turbine
A new gas turbine power plant was installed
recently in the Tuaspring desalination plant in
Tuas South (Singapore). The 310t gas turbine is
at the heart of the system. Bok Seng Logistics
transported it from the company’s marine base to
its place of operation in the desalination plant on
a Scheuerle selfpropelled modular transporter
(SPMT).
The daily desalination of more than 318,000cbm
of water requires enormous amounts of energy.
In order to be able to efficiently generate this, the
operator opted for a Siemens gas turbine,
measuring 11x5.2x4.8m and weighing 310t. The
transportation of the turbine by barge and on
Scheuerle SPMTs was managed by Singapore-
based Bok Seng Logistics, a customer of the TII
Group of many years standing.
The gas turbine was first lifted off a cargo ship by
crane and placed on a barge. Then it was taken
from the port in Tuas South to the Bok Seng
Logistics’ marine base. There it was loaded onto
28 axle lines of a Scheuerle SPMT and driven
along the coast to the Tuas South plant.
The TII Group and its SPMTs
In 1983, Scheuerle, which is now part of the
TII Group, developed a new vehicle that
revolutionised the heavy haulage industry –
the selfpropelled modular transporter (SPMT,
with container dimensions). The system of
modular construction for industrial plant,
conveyor systems or infrastructure projects
was turned upside down. Today, modules can
weigh as much as 15,000t – with quite a
further increase still imaginable. Such huge
loads can be handled without any major
problems thanks to SPMTs.The TII Group,
which includes the manufacturers Scheuerle,
Nicolas and Kamag as well as TII Energy, is a
global leader for selfpropelled modular
vehicles. 70% of all transport tasks involving
3,000t and a massive 90% of all jobs with
more than 5,000 t are carried out on TII’s
SPMTs. Operators can rent additional axle
lines and thus manage new projects flexibly,
even if additional axle lines are needed at
short notice.

4. RIDING ON THE EDGE: A REMARKABLE JOURNEY OF TRANSPORT
FROM KARACHI TO MUZAFFARABAD
Posted in: News
Nothing can stop Star Shipping (Pvt) Limited from finishing a job, not
even the treacherous “landslide zone” roads in Pakistan. Star Shipping
successfully completed a transport of Valve Body Casings from Karachi
to Muzaffarabad. The track to the site in Muzaffarabad is through the
mountains of Pakistan and the roads are susceptible to landslides,
potentially endangering the cargo and carrier’s equipment. However,
Star Shipping is recognized for their positive risk-taking and
accomplishments! Each Valve Body Casing has the dimensions of 4.80 x
5.0 x 2.70 meters and each weighs 57.50 tons. Great job to Star
Shipping (Pvt) Limited!

Star Shipping on the Move
Star Shipping, Pakistan, transport-ed valve
body casing, each weighing nearly 58 tons
and up to 5 meters wide, from Karachi to
Chatter Kallas, a journey that too the cargo
approxi-mately 1,840 kilometers through
Paki-stan. The job posed a huge challenge,
as the track to the site was a land-slided
zone with high cliffs, endanger-ing cargo and
carrier equipment alike.
But taking risks and accomplishments is part of the project logistics chal-
lenge, says the company’s Muhammad Kamran.
In another move, Star Shipping transported two 68-ton Wartsila en-gines
along with 52 packages. Engine dimensions were 38 x 8.1 x 13.5 me-ters.
Shipment was from Karachi to Islamabad:
Last but not least, Star Shipping handled discharge steel pipes from its own
agency vessel MV Fabulous SW. The steel pipes arrived from the Far East
for domestic use in Pakistan.

Qasim, Pakistan to ARL Site Morgawh (Rawalpindi) – 2 pieces 122 Tons and 56 x 4.30 x 5 Meters each.
Star Shipping did an extensive route survey for the 1480 kms road journey from Port Qasim to the job
site at Attock Refinery near Islamabad. We received the cargo vessel hook at Port Qasim, Pakistan and
two cranes were used for the loading of ISMV 001 & 010 at Descon Site Lahore (600ton American Hoist
Crane as Main Crane and 250 tons Manitowoc 4100w Crane as the assist Crane). We used special trucks
to move the 122 ton pieces by road over a 22 day journey with route cars and cooperation of local
authorities. All went according to plan with no problems!

RECONNAISSANCE ROAD SURVEY
41. 1- INTRODUCTION
The report is based on one day reconnaissance road survey from Port Qasim to Jhumpir project site about
127 Kilometers. The purpose of the survey was to analyze the exit point of port, road conditions and other
obstacles.
The survey was planned to be carried out on the basis of Scope of Work mentioned by EPC with our
transport supervisors who will then prepare a logistics plan based on the current findings.
The survey reports mentions Port Qasim as origin point where the exit gate were measured in order to
check the gates are passable for Over Dimensional cargo and ending point current wind turbine farm at
Jhumpir project site. Similarly during the survey the width of the road , bridges were also measured .
Further in this report different tables will clarify the count of wire intersection, bridges, railway crossing and
other observations.

58. 6- OBSERVATIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS
During the road survey it was observed that the road is from Port Qasim to
Jhumpir Project site is in sound condition for transportation of Wind Turbine
Units although there are in some sections of the road there is civil works and
widening of narrow bend required. There is good condition metal road made on
a small distance before reaching to project site.
The maximum height is 4.15 meters excluding trailer height and permissible
height is 4.85 meters specially passing under wire & cables observed between 4
meters and 5.5 meters apart from that at certain points the high tension wire is
in height not more than 6 meters for that matter of fact permission for
temporary suspension of electricity will be obtained prior from PEPCO.
The maximum width of the piece is 3.75 M which is exceeding the normal width
for that matter of fact the flag party will assist to normalize the traffic flow on
the road for safe and sound passage without interruption for that matter of fact
prior permission will be taken from National Highway Authority.
59. We are planning to induct more vehicles in
future to cater for the requirement of
transporting 125 Feet, 135 Feet and 145 Feet
long Wing Blades. Details of the trailers to be
fabricated / in process are as under :
