Of Mice and MEn
How do the relationships between the major characters and
minority characters help reveal the social prejudices prevalent
in the US in the 1930s?
Your answer should be a maximum of 1200 words in length and use
extensive examples from the novel “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck.
It may also:
Ø Identify the characters in the text who are associated with a minority
Ø Explore the way the novel presents the prejudices these minorities
experienced in 1930s California
Ø Explain how the relationships between these characters and major
characters reveal these prejudices
Ø Indicate ways that the structure of the novel and the way the characters
are presented furthers our understanding of life in California in the
1930s
Ø Discuss what the language used in the novel may tell us about the
characters and their experience of life on the ranch.
You have three hours to complete this controlled assessment, run in two
sessions with an overnight break between these. The first session should be
used for planning and drafting your response, and the second for editing and
producing a final copy.
