Dear Parents/Carers,
We would like to tell you more about a media project for our Year 7 class which will involve filming in
the Southbank area and editing their films at the BfI. The aim of this work is to encourage creativity,
group work, speaking and listening, planning film shots, as well as count towards an assessment for
English. This work also enables us to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum that specifies
that students should be given the opportunity to work with adults outside the classroom.
As you can imagine it is quite difficult to ensure that everybody in a large class gets the experience of
working with film equipment. The boys will work in small groups and have one of ten PGCE C English
and Drama trainee teachers to support them with the equipment and filming as well as provide adult
supervision. We have two editing suites booked at the BfI on the South Bank from 11.30 till 4pm and
have one of the IoE lecturers, Theo Bryer and, Rebecca Wilson, technical who has technical expertise,
to support the students with their filming and editing.
We will be off timetable on Tuesday 31st January 2012 to do our filming. The boys will come to school
as normal and during lesson 1 they will be allocated cameras and an adult facilitator. They will then
move around the Southbank area to film. As they complete their filming they will come to the BfI to
start their editing. Students will therefore be under adult supervision all the time, though they are not
members of staff. The adults supervising the students will have a member of staff’s mobile number
and the school number should they be concerned about anything. We deliberately use the area
around the South Bank and the BfI as it is close to the school. All the adults from other organisations
working with the boys are CRB checked by the institutions they work for and they all have experience
working with secondary school students.
The boys need to bring a packed lunch and they may bring pocket money to buy a drink as we move
around the Southbank. It is also important that they are in school uniform but have a warm coat and
gloves as they will be outside during the filming. It is best to bring a small back pack or bag for their
packed lunch rather than their usual school bag as they do not want to carry anything heavy while
moving around with cameras.

This is the third year we have run this project and we have built on our work from previous years and
this time the filming is fully integrated into their current scheme of work. We hope that the day will be
an exciting and interesting experience which will enable the students to develop their speaking and
listening skills and show how careful preparation can ensure they produce a quality end product.
Apart from the permission slip to participate in the project we are also asking for you permission that
we can use the subsequent films to show in school, on the school website and for the BfI (British Film
Institute) to show extracts or all of the films as examples of the work they do as part of their education
programme. With this in mind students will only use their first names in the credits.
If you would like more information about the project or would like to discuss it please contact
waugh@nautical.lambeth.sch.uk or lindsay@nautical.lambeth.sch.uk
Yours sincerely,
