2. A RIGOROUS INTRODUCTION (MY PERSPECTIVE)
• What if I can find a parking spot for my vehicle right from my phone and do not need to
create more traffic finding the parking spot manually? What if the waste collection
trucks are reminded by the sensors on the bins indicating which bins needs to be
emptied?
• Harnessing the power of Internet of things can reap such any many more benefits.
• The interconnection of things to the internet which are unconnected at this moment can
generate huge amount of diverse, unstructured data in the Internet.
• Insights and knowledge can be derived after structuring of this unstructured data.
Analytics applied after structuring of this data and Algorithmic Thinking applied on the
insights generated thereafter can help us transform insights into actions.
• According to me, the idea of connecting the physical things (by equipping them with
sensors) which can be connected but are not yet connected and driving intelligent
actions and decisions from the interconnection is termed as ‘Internet of Things’.
3. WHY I CHOSE IOT?
I chose Internet of Things out of many emerging technologies. I have my justification.
• I believe that any problem, no matter how big, can be solved with utter dedication and
smart work and by this amazing concept of Internet of things, we are confronted to a
vehicle that will allow us to address any problem whatsoever that exists in this world.
• I am highly motivated to contribute as much as I can to this largely growing community
of IOT implementers and developers because I can confidently state that I have
discovered that IOT is the field that I love investing time on, and hence the reason for
choosing this topic.
• I truly believe that by connecting the unconnected and reaping the benefits out of the
connections, there are immense number of possibilities in which humanity can be
served in the best way.
• Internet of things will surely transform the way we live, play and work.
4. Where Do I See IOT Heading In The Next Five(5) Years??
A huge number of start-ups are erupting these days and will continue to do so in the
coming years, because IOT can be enabled by a combination of a large number of
technologies which are represented below: There is a ton of things to explore!
For communication, we have the options of 802.15 technologies, RFID, Bluetooth
etc. For backbone, we have IPv4, IPv6, 6LoWPAN. For hardware we have
prototyping boards. For IOT implementation, we have Operating Systems like Riot
OS, ThingSquare Mist OS etc.
As I write, there are ideas that are sprouting all around the globe on harnessing the
power of Internet of things, research papers are being written on the same. In the next
five years, the market of Internet of things is estimated to reach trillions, because this
technology has ground-breaking potential to address problems.
Utilising the Internet of things paradigm, innovations have been done and are being done
in many sectors such as Manufacturing Sector, Retail Sector, Public Sector, Health Care,
Education etc. In the next five years, there will be not be even a single sector that will be
left out of realising that “Yes, IOT can bring change, a problem solving and a mind-
boggling change”.
5. Where Do I See IOT Heading In The Next Five(5) Years??
• In the coming years, I believe that there will be large number of organisations erupting
with the promise that they can provide efficient IOT solutions. But the start-ups that
will become huge will be the ones which will have more secure IOT solutions compared
to their counterparts.
• Also, five or less years down the lane, organisations will realise that by giving the
computers sensing ability via sensors and giving them control over actuators that can
perform mechanical functions, havoc can be created with ease if vulnerabilities exist in
the IOT solutions.
• The Internet of things is destined to thrive but there are protocols that are being
developed, existing technologies being explored, to find out the most efficient enabler
for IOT and the search and testing will continue in the coming years.
• Also as IOT advances, more and more things will be connected to the Internet. More
connections, means more data, more analytics, more actions, more benefits. Years
down the lane, almost all the organisations and individuals will come to a conclusion
that emerging technologies such as Big Data, Cloud Computing, Fog Computing etcetera
will need to strongly come together if IOT solutions have to be adopted on a wide scale.
6. CONCLUSION
• According to me, spending time and building services for the people in the area of
Internet of things is the most outstanding job in today’s era. Hence I am ready to
learn almost any technology that can enable IOT, may it be working on 802.15
networks, or helping in the solution of big data problem that is created by huge
amount of data generated from connected devices or the analytics part of IOT.
• Specifically, My area of interest covers working on resource-constrained
environments in which IOT solutions can be developed, smart city projects and
energy management using IOT.
If offered an internship in IOT, what do I intend to work on?
It is for sure that Internet of Things is going to thrive and change the very world that
we reside in. IOT can be made adopted on a large scale, if four fundamental pillars
i.e. people, process, things and data come together and strive for the global good.
